Read it at your computer for best results
Move over seniors! This book is useful for any age. It offers specific helps and walks the internet user through the process so that you feel comfortable with each new topic. I find it works best to sit in front of my computer and practice what I read to solidify each suggestion. My only complaint is that the writing in the examples is too small and grayed. Working at the computer solves this problem, since I can now see it full screen.

User review
Are older women afraid of computers?
The woman on the cover of this book looks like a character out of a pharmaceutical ad for an anti-anxiety drug. The idea behind this series is good, but the image of a sad, gray-haired woman in conjunction with the word `Dummies,` seems demeaning. It's no wonder that, in the reader reviews, most of the purchasers of this book are adult children of seniors and not the seniors themselves. A humorous cover would have been more effective and not as insulting.

User review
I sent this to my Mom and Dad.
I consult to businesses about online safety and one of the biggest customer communication challenges has always been how to educate people about being safe online without scaring or boring them. This book does a great job of achieving that balance. Statistically, senior internet users are more likely to be targeted by online fraudsters/scammers for a variety of reasons. What the authors do is describe the many situations that can lead to trouble and the relatively simple (and intuitive) ways to avoid it. The book covers online dating, online gaming, social networking, sharing pictures, sharing personal information, using email, using financial sites, talking to the grandkids about staying safe online, etc. What it drove home to me is that there are more minefields out there than we care to imagine and that when mistakes happen, they can be very serious. As such, I ended up buying a copy of the book for my parents because they are frequent online users, they are only aware of potential online pitfalls at a cursory level, and like many other seniors, if something were to go wrong, I would not be first on their list to call.

Great Resource!
My parents-in-law just went Online for the first time 2 months ago and this book has changed how they approach the Internet. Now that they are feeling a bit more adept at Email and browsing the Web, they are using this well-written Dummies book to make them safer. Great resource for elders or anyone!

This is a great book
This book was a lot of help in helping my uncle understand how to use the Internet, and all the great information about staying safe online made him much more comfortable with his decision to go online. The advice in this book made him feel confident--and I learned a thing or two, as well!

Reviews
Great book, especially if you are new to the medical field.

Love the item, hate the confusion of Amazon delivery svc online.

Reviews
I'm disapointed with this book, it's not quite what I expected.Allmost all cardiac emergencies are depicted with the old guidelines, that have been changed by the ILCOR in 2005.Treatment options are OK but there are many topics missing, could REALLY be better
Reviews
ICU rotation can always be intimidating for residents, especially the first one. Most of us start searching for a source to read as anxiety builds up. Everybody suggests Marino's "The ICU Book", which is OK, but needs time and it is not well balanced. This small book is a great source. You can quickly read it and refresh your knowledge before starting your rotation. During the rotation, you will be able to quickly review the topic and make sure you are not missing anything. I would highly recommend it.
Reviews
My internship we had open ICU's...so virtually every night I was stuck caring for critical patients in one of the ICUs. As a transitional resident, I had no interest in reading the Marino ICU book (which was in need of some updating). This book has everything you need to survive and help you manage even very sick patients while on call at night. I carried this book and the Ferri book in my labcoat as references in addition to some others on my PDA. This book is very concise, and will update you in just a few minutes on most issues you may face in the ICU/critical care medicine setting. Highly recommend for transitional residents, especially for those who would have no need to purchase larger more comprehensive references such as those going into medicine or anesthesiology. For those going into Ophthalmology, Radiology, etc.. this book is perfect.
Reviews
fits nicely into your lab coat. very handy for those 1-2 second glances when you need to confirm some issues in the ICU. Of course this isn't a textbook which will tell you everything but a very helpful guide to be carrying along as a med student or junior resident rotating in the icu or internal medicine rotation. good bang for your buck

The Environment and International Relations (Themes in International Relations)

The Environment and International Relations (Themes in International Relations)
Kate O'Neill | 2009-02-02 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 264 | Politics
This exciting new textbook introduces students to the ways in which the theories and tools of International Relations can be used to analyse and address global environmental problems. Kate O'Neill develops an historical and analytical framework for understanding global environmental issues, and identifies the main actors and their roles, allowing students to grasp the core theories and facts about global environmental governance. She examines how governments, international bodies, scientists, activists and corporations address global environmental problems including climate change, biodiversity loss, ozone depletion and trade in hazardous wastes. The book represents a new and innovative theoretical approach to this area, as well as integrating insights from different disciplines, thereby encouraging students to engage with the issues, to equip themselves with the knowledge they need, and to apply their own critical insights. This will be invaluable for students of environmental issues both from political science and environmental studies perspectives.

The Internal Auditing Handbook

The Internal Auditing Handbook
K. H. Spencer Pickett | 2003-10-17 00:00:00 | Wiley | 802 | Accounting
The first edition of The Internal Auditing Handbook received wide acclaim from readers and became established as one of the definitive publications on internal auditing. There have been a number of significant changes in the practice of internal auditing since publication of the first edition and this thoroughly revised second edition reflects those changes. The second edition provides coverage of the new definition of internal audit issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). It includes a new set of professional auditing standards and places a greater emphasis on professionalism. The key role of auditors in corporate governance is discussed and a new focus is provided on risk management. The second edition also examines the elevation of the status of the internal auditor from CIA to director of internal auditing and focuses on increased expectations from boards and audit committees. Attention is also given to the increasing competitive environment that exists between the large accounting firms. Another important addition involves the growing interest that is being placed in the self-audit concept.

This new edition of the Internal Auditing Handbook will prove to be an indispensable reference for both new and experienced auditors, as well as business managers, members of audit committees, control and compliance teams, and all those who may have an interest in promoting corporate governance.
Reviews
This book is an excellent recourse for professionals in the internal audit area. It is helpful for Internal Audit Department organization. It also contains all the fundamentals of internal audit and its evolution.

Tracers in the Oil Field (Developments in Petroleum Science)

Tracers in the Oil Field (Developments in Petroleum Science)
B. Zemel | 1995-01-27 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science | 514 | Engineering
This book is concerned with the application of tracers to a wide variety of oil field operations. It provides the necessary nuclear concepts and techniques which are basic to oil field tracer applications. Laboratory and field techniques are explained and illustrated as are the associated regulatory and safety aspects. Within the book, each area of oil field use is considered separately and specific applications of tracers discussed and relevant literature reviewed. The use of non-radioactive tracers is pointed out wherever it is applicable.

Due to the nature of this competitive industry, much research is poorly documented, thus Tracers in the Oil Field aims to make the technology more available to current users in the oil field.

Linux Network Security (Administrator's Advantage Series)

Linux Network Security (Administrator's Advantage Series)
| 2005-03-30 00:00:00 | | 0 | Network Security

PROTECT YOUR NETWORK FROM HACKERS!

Linux networks are becoming more and more common, but security is often an overlooked issue. Unfortunately, in today?s environment all networks are potential hacker targets, from top-secret military research networks to small home LANs. Linux Network Security focuses on securing Linux in a networked environment, where the security of the entire network needs to be considered rather than just isolated machines. It uses a mix of theory and practical techniques to teach administrators how to install and use security applications, as well as how the applications work and why they are necessary. Starting with the need for security and understanding the problem, the book teaches administrators about packet filtering (firewalling) with iptables, hardening services such as Apache, BIND, Sendmail, FTP, and MySQL to prevent attacks, network analysis, encryption, local security, DoS attacks, and rootkits. Auditing networks for potential vulnerabilities and creating secure passwords is also explored. This is the one book that really details how to secure a Linux network.

KEY FEATURES * Provides a complete guide to finding, fixing, and preventing holes in a Linux network * Teaches all the main aspects of securing a small LAN, from routing and topology to configuring UNIX services, with particular emphasis on securing against remote attack * Teaches how a Linux firewall can be used to protect desktop systems inside the LAN from viruses, spam, and hackers * Includes a CD-ROM with various open source software that will allow administrators to implement the techniques from the book and begin securing their networks immediately

On the CD! (see Appendix F for more details) * SOFTWARE Includes John The Ripper password cracker, Ettercap, Nmap port scanner, Nessus vulnerability scanner, Nikto vulnerability scanner, LibSafe stack protection library, TripWire IDS, and Snort 2.2.0 IDS and packet sniffer * LINKS Hyperlinks to all the URLs mentioned in the book * FIGURES All the images used in the book

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS UNIX/Linux: Linux operating system with a 2.4 or 2.6 (recommended) kernel; Pentium I processor, or equivalent; 64MB RAM (128MB or more recommended); CDROM drive; X Windows, optional; 80MB available hard disk space; Perl interpreter; GCC 2.96 or greater; WINDOWS: Windows 98, NT, or greater; Pentium I processor, or equivalent; 128MB RAM; CD-ROM drive; 80MB free hard disk space; Perl interpreter; C compiler

User review
A linux system is secure if you can depend on it and its software to behave as you expect
The focus of this book is not on formal definitions and theoricals models so much as it is on practical form. But in this book as many other books, does not address these topics in sufficient detail.

Instead, this book emphasizes the use of the security applications, as well as how the applications work and why they are necessary and many other interesting topics.

Yes, this is not the best book about security in linux servers, but yes is a good book for beginners and intermediate users using small LANs.

User review
One of the better books on this subject
If you are a network administrator who needs to get a quick handle on Linux security this would be a very good choice. It covers the basics of security in general (weak passwords, key logging, Trojans, network topology, etc.) as well as security issues that are specific to Linux.

It does a good job of explaining how Iptables are used in a firewall and how to tune the network. Linux Network Security does appear to thoroughly cover all the basic system security considerations including the passwd file, shadowing, enforcing security, using PAM, and SUDO security. The best part of the book is when the author gets to how to choose an appropriate distribution, use a chroot jail, and protect memory.

In addition to the basic Linux security common to all distributions the author discusses role based access control, the Linux Intrusion Detection System, and the secure Linux distribution SeLinux. The book ends with sections on securing the most common services for Linux - Apache, SSH, NFS, NIS, DNS, BIND, and FTP. It also includes a section on keeping your system secure using Tripwire.

If you need additional help on specific issues there are six appendixes which cover recompiling the kernel, kernel configuration for networking, firewall scripts, and cryptography. This book is obviously intended for the Linux network administrator, but the level of knowledge assumed is somewhat confusing. For some pieces it seems to assume no prior knowledge (like Chapters 1 and 2) and for other areas it seems to assume some basic prior understanding of Linux (although admittedly minimal). Keep in mind that there are whole books on some of these items (like securing Apache) so there is obviously much more detailed information available if you have a specific need. Linux Network Security is highly recommended to network administrators who are dealing with a basic file and print sharing network or who need a solid overview of Linux security and some of the security problems with common services.

User review
lots of info
despite its smallish size (550 pages) this book is packed full of useful info. the first couple of chapters are a whistle stop tour of the all the ways a linux box can be hacked, and the rest of the book describes how to fix these problems. most of the book is intermediate level, but a couple of the later chapters are more advanced. but i think this is a good thing because it means the book goes into much more detail than most others.

User review
Includes a Great Deal of Useful Software
Security is one of those things that everyone knows they should do but typically doesn't until too late. In spite of all the warnings most companies ignore the pleadings of the assigned security specialist until all of a sudden they are hit in the face with a penetration. And this is the theme of the introductory chapter, except that he explains it a lot better.

The second chapter starts with an explanation of John The Ripper. This is a program that attempts to automatically crack your system's password file. (The John The Ripper program is included on the books CD so you can use it to test your own system.)

By this point he had my attention. It was clear that if he wished he could get into my system and do whatever he wished. I interrupted my reading at this point and changed several system passwords to make them a lot more difficult.

After that I went on to read the rest of the book on finding, fixing and preventing holes in a Linux network. I never realized it was so easy.

The book is a combined explanation of what's happening and a wealth of software on the CD. This software, described in the text part of the book, is a selection of software off of the net. The net has a huge amount of software available. Here the author has selected a dozen or so packages that he discusses enough for you to use and to have some faith that the results you are getting are worthwhile.

Perhaps the best book on Linux security ever.

Perfect ! Keep the good service !
I bought NEW and i got NEW !!! Good service ! I got my money's worth !!! Thank you.

User review
Decent book
This book well complements its predecessor. It is a well written book, which provides you with all the necessary internal details and does not try to be a reference book, as most of the books do. It is always possible to get references on msdn.com, however, the content in this book is far more valuable than that.

User review
Good content, but dissapointing release process
This book inherits from the Essential ASP book. If you don't have that book, it's like trying to create an inherited class without any documentation or source for the base class. This book requires the reader to have the Essential ASP book and to do a mental merge (vtable?), where some chapters come from ASP.NET and others come from ASP.NET 2.0. I would have preferred a 2nd edition that merged all of the current content into a single book.

User review
Could be better
This one is not as solid & thorough as the previous edition on asp.net 1.1, some deficiencies include:

- page life cycle is rather poorly explained, MSDN documentation does a better job

- only covers the website model, not the 1.1 style web project model, which is a shame, as many professional sites don't use the web site model (which btw really sucks)

- page compilation is poorly covered, this actually changed a lot between 1.1 & 2.0, but as the author chose to write this book as an addon to the earlier edition, the explanation of this topic is rather sketchy.

- web parts: didnt get to bottom of how proxywebpartmanager is different from the normal webpartmanager. again, MSDN online arctles provide a clearer explanation.

all in all, i get the impression this book is somehow rushed to market.

User review
ASP.NET Expertise Required
This is a good book for somebody who is already quite familiar with ASP.NET and just wants to learn what is new with ASP.NET 2.0. I thought the material was sometimes too technical. For example, there is a lot of information on changing the provider database. You would probably find this book most useful if you needed to dig into the guts of ASP.NET 2.0.

However, `Essential ASP.NET 2.0` isn't a very good introduction to ASP.NET 2.0 because it does not provide simple explanations on how to use the new features in real world situations. I've read `ASP.NET 2.0 For Dummies` but found it went over too much familiar material on ASP.NET and left out many aspects of ASP.NET 2.0. Ideally you need a book that focuses just on the new features of ASP.NET 2.0 with an emphasis on practical usage.

I would most recommend this book if you needed in depth information on how to go beyond the typical use of the new features when you find yourself frustrated by some special considerations. If you need to use a MySQL database then the information on changing the provider database will be very useful.

My Book of Subtraction (Kumon Workbooks)

My Book of Subtraction (Kumon Workbooks)
Kumon Publishing | 2005-10-06 00:00:00 | Kumon Publishing North America | 80 | Math
This workbook will improve and expand on the skills acquired in My Book of SIMPLE SUBTRACTION. In this book, children will practice first how to subtract the numbers 1 through 9 and then they will reinforce this skill by learning how to subtract numbers 1 through 20. The purpose of this book is to prepare children for higher-level mathematics by improving their basic subtraction skills.
Reviews
I bought this workbook for my son while I was teaching him subtraction. Unfortunately, this book is just a bunch of subtraction problems, but there is nothing to help teach subtraction! I can just as easily generate subtraction problems on the computer or even write them out. Also, it was written with number sentences. I wanted to expose him to both number sentences and stacked problems.

I bought "Two Plus Two Is Not Five" and found that to be an invaluable source to teach tricks for adding and subtracting that even my 4 1/2 year old could learn.
Reviews
We started our six year old with Kumon Workbooks over this last summer hoping to give him heads up with first grade, which was just around the corner. He stepped in barely knowing his alphabet. By the end of the summer, our thirty-minute lesson each day not only gave him confident in his letters but he was spelling way into a first grade level and he is reading! I have tried other brands and found them to be much to confusing for a child because they jump around in different styles throughout the workbook. Kumon is consistent in their style all through their books and my son was able to absorb his lessons without frustration. Since school has started he not only feels confident within his class time, but finds any small homework that comes home fun and easy!

Search Kumon Books and you will see tons!!!

Good luck with your adventure!

American Airship Bases and Facilities (American Airship Bases & Facilities)

American Airship Bases and Facilities (American Airship Bases & Facilities)
James R. Shock | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Atlantis Productions | 240 | Aviation
Reviews
American Airship Bases & Facilities covers not only all the U.S. Navy facilities, but U.S. Army and private facilities such as the Goodyear airship bases. It also includes measured American facilities abroad, such as those that existed in the Panama Canal Zone, South America and Europe.

This is Mr. Shock's crowning achievement - the result 50 years of seeking out and assembling data on virtually every structure in the U.S. that ever housed a balloon or airship. We are lucky that he is sharing in all this data with us, because it would take another lifetime or two to duplicate his effort, since many of the original sources of information are dispersed or no longer in existence.

AABF is attractively packaged and profusely illustrated with more than 200 half- tone photos, artwork and promotional materials. The book is organized by Navy World War I, Army, Navy rigid, private, and Navy WWII hangars. This allows most of the structures to be presented more or less chronologically by the dates of their construction. Many of the structures and bases are so rare that they are all but unknown to even the die hard LTA historian. All are illustrated with one or more photos of each hangar.

The base histories are informative and each hangar is consistently described, so as to make comparisons easier. Construction methods are noted in some detail. Care is given to documenting the whole life span of each hangar where known, including modifications or moves of whole buildings to different states. For context, there are generous descriptions of airship operations that took place at the bases, making the entries an informative read. The data is up-to-date to late 1995, an even includes coverage of events such as the Weeksville fire and base closures.

There are appendices on mooring mast development, hangar construction, and notes on foreign airship hangars in use. Even hangars proposed but never built receive mention. An index ( a welcome feature ) is not entirely comprehensive, but helps find many entries. Sources of original information are also documented making the work that much more valuable to the scholarly researcher.

One minor complaint is that some of the information on the WWII Navy bases in South America is contemporary to the war, and does not cover the end of some operations. However, the errors or omissions are minor, and this is the best source of hangar data to be found. The appendix on how the wooden WWII hangars were built is almost worth the price of admission itself.

Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine, Second Edition (Legato, Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine)
Marianne J. Legato | 2009-12-03 00:00:00 | Academic Press | 800 | Internal Medicine
The field of gender-specific medicine examines how normal human biology and physiology differs between men and women and how the diagnosis and treatment of disease differs as a function of gender. This revealing research covers various conditions that predominantly occur in men as well conditions that predominantly occur in women. Among the areas of greatest difference are cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, the immune system, lung cancer as a consequence of smoking, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, and infectious diseases.

The Second Edition of Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine will decrease in size from two to one volume and focus on the essentials of gender-specific medicine. In response to the market as well as many of the reviewers' suggestions, the Editor has eliminated approximately 55 chapters from the first edition to make the book more compact and more focused on the essentials of gender-specific medicine. The content will be completely updated, redundant sections and chapters will be merged with others that are more relevant to the current study of sex and gender differences in human physiology and pathophysiology.

  • Editor has eliminated approximately 55 chapters from the first edition to make the book more compact and more focused on the essentials of gender-specific medicine.

  • Longer bibliographies and suggested reviews/papers of particular relevance and importance will be added at the end of each section.

  • Each author will be asked to include recent meta-analysis of data

  • Each chapter will progress translationally from the basic science to the clinical applications of gender-specific therapies, drugs, or treatments

  • Section on drug metabolism will be eliminated but the subject will be incorporated into each relevant chapter

  • Section on aging will be eliminated but age will be considered as a variable in each of the separate chapters

Data Abstraction and Structures Using C++

Data Abstraction and Structures Using C++
| 1996-08-26 00:00:00 | | 0 | C++

Data Abstraction and Structures Using C++ is the ideal text for introducing computer science students to C++. A powerful alternative for second courses in computer science, the text is thoroughly rooted in the concepts of data abstraction and object-oriented software development that have transformed the subject of data structures. The text introduces the abstract properties of important data types in Part I and discusses their implementation later in Part II. This separation of concepts helps students understand the difference between the properties of a data structure and it's implementation, so that they can develop the alternative data representations best suited to specific programming problems. Data Abstraction and Structures Using C++ is intended for use after a first course in programming with a high-level language, but does not require specific knowledge of C++ itself. Instead, the text helps students make the transition from Pascal or C to C++ through clear explanations and specific information included in the appendices. The authors' disciplined, careful presentation is designed to steer students clear of the pitfalls that sometimes accompany the use of this powerful and increasingly popular language.

Mathematical Feynman Path Integrals and Their Applications

Mathematical Feynman Path Integrals and Their Applications
Sonia Mazzucchi | 2009-05-22 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 224 | Mathematics
Although more than 60 years have passed since their first appearance, Feynman path integrals have yet to lose their fascination and luster. They are not only a formidable instrument of theoretical physics, but also a mathematical challenge; in fact, several mathematicians in the last 40 years have devoted their efforts to the rigorous mathematical definition of Feynman's ideas. This volume provides a detailed, self-contained description of the mathematical difficulties as well as the possible techniques used to solve these difficulties. In particular, it gives a complete overview of the mathematical realization of Feynman path integrals in terms of well-defined functional integrals, that is, the infinite dimensional oscillatory integrals. It contains the traditional results on the topic as well as the more recent developments obtained by the author. Mathematical Feynman Path Integrals and Their Applications is devoted to both mathematicians and physicists, graduate students and researchers who are interested in the problem of mathematical foundations of Feynman path integrals.

Nihilism (Key Ideas)

Nihilism (Key Ideas)
Bulent Diken | 2009-01-08 00:00:00 | Routledge | 200 | Philosophy

Most significant problems of contemporary life have their origins in nihilism and its paradoxical logic, which is simultaneously destructive to and constitutive of society. Yet, in social theory, nihilism is a surprisingly under-researched topic.

This book develops a systematic account of nihilism in its four main forms: escapism, radical nihilism, passive nihilism and 'perfect nihilism.' It focuses especially on the disjunctive synthesis between passive nihilism (the negation of the will) and radical nihilism (the will to negation), between the hedonism/disorientation that characterizes the contemporary post-political culture and the emerging forms of despair and violence as a reaction to it.

The book deals with nihilism at three levels. First, it addresses the genealogy and consequences of nihilism, which is followed by an excursus through film analysis. Then the book focuses on the 'social,' relating nihilism to capitalism, post-politics and terrorism. Another excursus fleshes out the theoretical argumens by focusing on Houellebecq's fiction. Finally, the possibilities of overcoming nihilism are considered by emphasizing the significance of concepts such as event, agonism and antagonism in this context.

Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 (Programmer to Programmer)

Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 (Programmer to Programmer)
David Buser,John Kauffman,Juan T. Llibre,Brian Francis,Dave Sussman,Chris Ullman,Jon Duckett | 2000-07-11 00:00:00 | Wrox | 1248 | C#
ASP is the future of the web. If you're looking for a way to create attractive, intelligent web pages, or if you're just looking for a way to extend your HTML know-how, then ASP is an effective way to achieve your goals. With ASP, you can customize your web pages to be more dynamic, more efficient and more responsive to your users. It's not just a technology, though - to get the best out of ASP, you'll be using it in tandem with HTML, and with one or more of the web's simple scripting languages. This book will teach you everything you need to create useful real-world applications on the web.

Who is this book for?

This book is for anybody with a grasp of HTML who wants to add more to their web pages. It also covers VBScript - a simple Internet programming language. This makes it the ideal first step for the aspiring web professional. It's also useful for more experienced programmers looking for a practical, no-nonsense introduction to ASP and programming for the web. To get the most out of this book you should be running Windows 2000, which includes ASP 3 - the latest version of this popular technology.

What does this book cover?

  • Teaches VBScript as an integral part of learning to use ASP
  • Describes how to make your pages more dynamic with HTML and script code
  • Covers writing and debugging script code
  • Explains how to set up ASP, what software to use, and how to administer your pages
  • Shows how you can access databases to give dynamically updated web pages
  • Introduces object based programming, and shows you how to use ASP objects
  • Provides the foundation for you to write useful, real-world dynamic web pages
  • Includes a fully worked sample application to demonstrate the power of ASP
  • Loaded with examples and useful tips
  • Introduces XML, one of the latest web programming technologies, and explains its use in conjunction with ASP

Filling an important spot in the Wrox Programmer to Programmer series, Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 is an excellent introduction to the new version of ASP released for the Windows 2000 platform. This guide expects no previous ASP knowledge or even previous Web development experience.

Its friendly style makes this book welcome reading at all skill levels. The material is carefully presented to avoid losing readers who are totally new to ASP programming, yet it still provides impressive technical coverage, beginning with the very basic concepts behind ASP programming and moving forward to advanced coding techniques.

As each topic is presented, relevant screen shots and useful code snippets under the heading "How It Works" complement the text. The chapters also include step-by-step exercises to familiarize you with new techniques and tools. An extensive case study application takes you through the entire development process as well. If you're interested in Web coding Microsoft-style, this is the right place to start. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: ASP language fundamentals, server- and client-side scripting, ASP object model, cookies, error handling, scripting objects, recordsets, transactions and COM+, XML introduction, ADO object model, and VBScript reference.
Reviews
This book in book format may be good, but in the Kindle format beware that many pages (and ALL of the appendixes) are just scanned images of a text page and not actually scanned and converted to text.

On the Kindle you can't search for text that is on these pages and they show up small (like an image) on the screen. You have to zoom the image and even then you can't read some of the pages. And, zooming on the Kindle isn't exactly a fast process.

If you are a coder and you get this book as a reference manual, then keep in mind that when you search on a term, that your searches will never find any of the pages that are scanned in as images. For me, this defeats the whole advantage the Kindle version has over the book version.

The entire appendixes are scanned images of pages and non-searchable and that's where the ASP syntax reference section is located.

I'd avoid this book at least the Kindle version.

i bought many ASP 3.0 books and this one is the best. I am studying to become a programmer and regardless of the books I must use in school, I will always buy from this cie. (www.wrox.cie)

Lots of examples, you can download the codes for free, easy to understand, why aren't all books like this ?
Reviews
Like the others have said... this is a good starter book for those looking to learn the older ASP technologies, since you may need to know a little of this if you are messing with older sites. I would recommend this book. However, the one thing that is wrong with this book is the MASSIVE amount of grammatical errors and typing errors.

Its calling out the wrong variables in certain situanions and mislabeling methods and procedures. Once you are aware this is happening in the book you just need to be mindful and know you aren't crazy, its a typing error. I hope Wrox has started taking their textbooks to the editor and getting them proofread, because it's a shame a book this good is peppered with so many errors.

In closing, this is worth the read and it will surely help you on you way to learning ASP 3.0.
Reviews
Beginning Active Server Pages is an all encompassing book on classic ASP web server development. The authors explain in great detail from the beginning on how dynamic web development works. No matter what technology you use (PHP, Coldfusion, JSP), how a web browser requests a page, the web server send the request to the server-side engine and/or does a database request and send the result to the browser. The book assumes no previous knowledge of web development and explains the basics very well so that any reader can start from any skill level.

The beginning of the book discusses what software you will need to get started which basically is either IIS (Internet Information Serve) or PWS (Personal web Server) in a Windows environment. How to install, test and configure the web server is discussed as well as setting up user permissions and virtual directories. This is a great starter to making sure the reader has all the information to get started on creating their first ASP web page.

The author continues explaining basic scripting techniques and language syntax of web scripting (VBScript) and explaining the differences between client and server side scripting and how the IIS engine interprets the request. Also covered early are the intrinsic ASP objects such as Request, Response, Server objects. A good review of some of the basic components of this very robust development technology.

The book then goes into send and receiving data from web forms in showing the reader some very useful but basic examples to get you started. The book covers in the next few chapters (4 - 5), in detail the basics of VBScript language such as variables, operators, strings, arrays, control statements (if, case, loops) and functions. The next chapter (6), goes into the concept of objects, methods, properties and events which explain to the user that almost everything is an object in ASP and the importance of this fact as well. Some OOP concepts such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism are reviewed with some nice examples.

The next two chapters cover many important ASP objects in great detail such as Response, Request, Application, Session, and Cookies. These chapters cover most of the most used objects that will be used in almost any ASP application. When you can master these objects you will have a great understanding of the fundamentals of ASP applications. The authors do a great job of explaining these important topics to the reader that it gives you more motivation to read more and learn more. Unlike other books that try to explain too much and confuse the reader, this book explains just enough in English other than techo-bable.

The rest of the book covers all types of database access using connects, recordsets, cursors, ADO, locking, filtering data, SQL syntax, and much more. Among other topics covered at the end of the book are focusing on advanced topics such as XML, Transactions and COM+.

The book is really all you need to learn and master ASP to develop dynamic web applications for yourself.
Reviews
Prior to purchasing this book I had no experience with ASP whatsoever. One day at work I was told that I needed to study up on ASP, and fast. I didn't really know where to start, but I ended up with this book, and it has been a lifesaver. I took the time to work through the examples in a select few key chapters, and was amazed that after only a couple of days I had developed the skills necessary for basic ASP development.

Now its been a few months, and the book still serves as a useful reference. It is extremely well organized. The examples are basic, but definitely teach the fundamentals needed to become a competent ASP developer. It will not make you an expert, but that's not its purpose anyway. It excels at relating the relevant information in an understandable and easy to learn format. For me to be developing with ASP in only 2 or 3 days is a testament to the quality of this book. I've never read a Wrox book before now, but I will definitely only purchase Wrox books in the future.

Game-Changing Strategies: How to Create New Market Space in Established Industries by Breaking the Rules (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership)

Game-Changing Strategies: How to Create New Market Space in Established Industries by Breaking the Rules (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership)
Constantinos C. Markides | 2008-05-23 00:00:00 | Jossey-Bass | 256 | Industrial
Game-Changing Strategies explains the reasons behind this puzzle and presents practical ideas on how established firms could not only discover new radical business models but also grow them next to their existing business models. The challenge for established firms is not the discovery of a new business model?the real challenge is how to make two business models coexist. This book offers advice on how established firms can implement structures and processes that make the new business model less conflicting and more palatable to the existing business.
Reviews
Yes, you will get smarter by reading this book. Not because it gives you the answers to your questions straight out but because it makes you think of the answers. It gives you the tools.

I simply love this kind of books, I hate the 1+1=2 style .

If you don't like reflecting, this is not for you :-D

Enjoy!
Reviews
Readers of business books on innovation have all been victims of the hype of doing new things and doing things differently. Of course we all know that doing new things and finding new ways of doing things can be sources of considerable value, with payoffs that go far beyond increased efficiency and continuous improvement. But simply eulogizing the companies that have made it big with a new business model (the IKEAs, Body Shops, Entreprise Rent-a-Cars and Southwest Airlines of the world) against formidable established competitors, is eye-opening but somehow insufficient.

Business model innovation - how a company changes key parts of the value chain to create new space in an established industry - is the subject of Professor Markides' new book. Remarkably removed from the common hype Markides emphasizes:

1. That implementing the new business model is harder than inventing it.

2. For a start-up, business model innovation is more obvious and easier than for an established company.

3. There are more business model innovators who fail than succeed.

4. An established company that decides to run a new business model, has to simultaneously manage degrees of differentiation and integration, synergy and competition with the existing business model and different ways of managing these can be successful

5. Established firms have various strategic options when responding to disruptive competitors with new business models

6. Established firms should themselves be innovative in their business models

And much more. The book is partly based on the author's own research of a large sample of business model innovators and is full of well-known and not-so-well-known case-examples, all well-written and with business arguments clearly articulated.

Of course the author understands that innovation is impossible without creativity and he counterbalances his "Creativity is not enough" Chapter 3, with his Appendix B - "How to enhance corporate creativity".

All in all a fine business book.

Reviews
This book is an excellent wake up call for all market leaders that like to keep in control of their destiny. In a very comprehensable way Markide show the risks of complacency and how companies can stay or get ahead with their innovations.
Reviews
This book is excellent. It demystifies strategic innovation and explains, in clear and concise language, how established firms can discover and successfully adopt new business models without cannibalizing their existing businesses. The book is delicately balanced between academic research and practical advice, and the numerous case studies presented are extremely well researched and thought provoking. After "All The Right Moves" and "Fast Second", this is another masterpiece by Markides and confirms his status as a world class business strategy scholar and author.

Reviews
This book provides a thoughtful discussion about how large, incumbent firms can strategically innovate and simultaneously manage two business models to sustain competitive advantages over new entrants. Markides is one of the leading strategy scholars of our time and this new book is relevant for both practicing senior managers as well as those teaching strategy courses. There are many practical examples and a clear explanation of how to implement the ideas. A must read!

Globalisation, Ideology and Education Policy Reforms (Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research)

Globalisation, Ideology and Education Policy Reforms (Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research)
Joseph Zajda | 2010-03-04 00:00:00 | Springer | 201 | Education

The eleventh in the 12-volume book series Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research, this work sets out to explore the interrelationship between ideology and education reforms, setting it in a global context. With this as its focus, the chapters represent hand-picked scholarly research on major discourses in the field of comparative education. A compendium of the very latest thinking on the subject, this volume is, like the others in the series, a state-of-the-art sourcebook for researchers, practitioners and policymakers alike. Not only do the chapters offer a timely overview of current issues affecting comparative education and education policy research in what is now a global educational culture, but the work also contains ideas about future directions that policy reforms could take.

The book draws upon recent studies in the areas of globalisation, equity, and the role of the State. It explores conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches applicable in the research covering the State, globalisation, and education reforms. The research evinces the neo-liberal ideological imperatives of current education and policy reforms, and illustrates the way that shifts in the relationship between the State and education policy affect current trends in education reforms and schooling globally. Individual chapters critically assess the dominant discourses and debates on comparative education research in education and policy reforms. Using diverse comparative education paradigms from critical theory to globalisation, the authors focus on globalisation, ideology and democracy and examine both the reasons and outcomes of education reforms, policy change and transformation. They provide a more informed critique of models of accountability, quality and school effectiveness that are informed by Western social values. The book also draws upon recent studies in the areas of equity, cultural capital and dominant ideologies in education.

I have read a few good books on Templar, Masons, Bilderburg, but putting it together is spotty. Ex-was a time knights were so powerful, kings had to pay. Many were killed, so changed org name. There was a time, they learned from Sufi Muslims, cath church pursued, since Islam thought as 'infidels'. This guy knows more, but it seems things were hidden as symbols, often found on cathedrals. Some symbols are math instruments, seen in Masonry. Islam was ahead in math, science, so symbols look innocent. The question is not @ the tool, compass, etc, but what it meant.

Sadly many masons think it is @ helping, and are clueless @ what symbols once meant. Also, the occult is only known to those at high orders. JFK said 'secret societies. He wanted re-importation of meds fromm Canada, often 30-50% cheaper, someone wanted to give Medicare bargaining power'. Tho most opposed the bill as citizens, the demschose big biz over citizens. Sanders irritates dems. Since rep accused of picking winners, hurting small biz, to us citizens, this is more of the same.

Libertarian says 'no corporate welfare, get troops out of mid east, japan, Germany, etc'. Mil industry has many secret layers, underground cities, there are things unk own to congress and Obama. So, Iran wants to be super power, Muslim nation beg Israel to protect, then us to topple. That status has responsibility, it is whether they could do 180, or whether such power would corrupt them worse than Us.

If there was a fairly safe free place in world, I would leave. Patrick Henry would have created a better constitution, IMO.

Just highlights. The fav topic in some 12th classes is when we will have next revolution. Many want our govt replaced, think military, police, FBI have power? dC arrogant to feel safe. Many in uniform despise them too.

DO NOT SPEND .01 CENT ON THIS PIECE OF TRASH. This William Sutton is a Seventh Day Adventist clown trying to make some money on the side. Don't let him fool you with this attractive cover. He uses this book to sell his cultic SDA doctrines (2300 years ridicule doctrine). For those who don't know what a Seventh Day Adventist religion is, this is a sabbatical cabbalist cult which was born from the great disappointment of 1844 and it's founder was a 33 Degree Freemason called William Miller. Sutton dares to quote in this book a False Satanic Prophet called Ellen G. White and her book full of lies (The Great Controversy) just to proof his believes. Ellen G. White was an esoteric agnostic teacher of the occult in disguised who called herself a prophet from God. How can a Seventh Day Adventist have the guts to talk against the mystery religion when his own SDA religion is base on occultism and lies? SDA's believe that Jesus is and Angel (Michael) just like the Mormons and the Jehovah Witnesses. This author is nothing but a joker who doesn't have a clue of what he is talking about. Only an SDA fool can believe something like this. THIS BOOK IS WORTH NOTHING. JUST PURE GARBAGE... I HAVE WASTED MY MONEY ON THIS RELIGIOUS CHARLATAN. DO NOT LET HIM DECEIVE YOU...

Sutton explains and traces in a clear concise manner the origins of the illuminati and how this is relevant and explained in Bible prophecy.

Filled with historical inaccuracies that I caught during my first reading in highschool. The author apparently did not have access to simple refrence books.

My whole life I have dealt with wanting the truth. Yes this book does expose ideas and beliefs of the Illuminati. Actually to the reader who says this is a pitch for 7th day adventist let me remind you thee are freemasons and illuminized freemasons in the 7th day adventist church. There are 2 or 3 people that will try to talk negative about books like this because they are BLIND and IGNORANT and they don't want to believe that this is actually happening and also because it is an attempt to give them a clear conscience. But I can tell you that the satanism/luciferianism is VERY much real and to those that do NOT know this and understand this, they should talk to Alex Jones for example of www.infowars.com who actually has the crust of what books like this talk about. Sure it is hard to fully expose and birn these kinds of sick and evil people to the forefront because they are the power elite of the world. But that does not mean we cannot protect ourselves and help others by knowing. Also the number 666 IS the mark of the beast and of satan/lucifer. To the person who said otherwise believes too much in occult teaching and half-baked history books. Most of what schools are teaching now is NOT the whole truth and usually not much of anything that is valuable to people. This is what is called "dumbing down of the educational system"! The Illuminati and those connected to them do NOT want us to expose them or know about them. They want us to be controlled. Look around you. If you want to continue to be like a few of these others who are so ignorant that they think they know it all, then they are already deceived and so are you. Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease

Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease
Daniela Galimberti | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Nova Biomedical Books | 307 | Internal Medicine
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the deposition into the brain of amyloid peptide, which originates a cascade of inflammatory events leading eventually to neuronal death. These pathological events likely occur several years before the clinical manifestation of the disease, implying that potential therapeutical interventions are currently started too late to give beneficial results. Recently, growing attention has been paid to the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), considered the prodromal phase of AD, as 80 per cent of subjects with MCI have been shown to develop AD within 5 years. Several studies aimed to identify biological markers to differentiate between normal aging and incipient AD have been carried out, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and neuroimaging. In particular, the evaluation of CSF Amyloid beta (1-42) levels, together with tau and phospotau, are of help for recognizing early AD. Besides, a number of additional molecules are altered in CSF. Other early modifications have been observed in peripheral cells, such as fibroblasts and leukocytes, as well as in serum from patients. Biomarkers for AD represent important tools supporting the clinical diagnosis and the choice of potential therapeutic options. Moreover, they would be of great help for the selection of cohorts of homogeneous patients for clinical trials with new disease-modifying compounds. This book is aimed to give an update about MCI as prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD), to discuss the main known pathological mechanisms at the basis of AD and to describe the possible biomarkers to be used for an early diagnosis of the disease.

Review of the Department of Homeland Security's Approach to Risk Analysis

Review of the Department of Homeland Security's Approach to Risk Analysis
Committee to Review the Department of Homeland Security's Approach to Risk Analysis,National Research Council | 2010-09-10 00:00:00 | National Academies Press | 160 | Military
The events of September 11, 2001 changed perceptions, rearranged national priorities, and produced significant new government entities, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) created in 2003. While the principal mission of DHS is to lead efforts to secure the nation against those forces that wish to do harm, the department also has responsibilities in regard to preparation for and response to other hazards and disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, and other "natural" disasters. Whether in the context of preparedness, response or recovery from terrorism, illegal entry to the country, or natural disasters, DHS is committed to processes and methods that feature risk assessment as a critical component for making better-informed decisions.

Review of the Department of Homeland Security's Approach to Risk Analysis explores how DHS is building its capabilities in risk analysis to inform decision making. The department uses risk analysis to inform decisions ranging from high-level policy choices to fine-scale protocols that guide the minute-by-minute actions of DHS employees. Although DHS is responsible for mitigating a range of threats, natural disasters, and pandemics, its risk analysis efforts are weighted heavily toward terrorism. In addition to assessing the capability of DHS risk analysis methods to support decision-making, the book evaluates the quality of the current approach to estimating risk and discusses how to improve current risk analysis procedures.

Review of the Department of Homeland Security's Approach to Risk Analysis recommends that DHS continue to build its integrated risk management framework. It also suggests that the department improve the way models are developed and used and follow time-tested scientific practices, among other recommendations.

Flowering Plants. Dicotyledons: Celastrales, Oxalidales, Rosales, Cornales, Ericales (The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants) (v. 6)

Flowering Plants. Dicotyledons: Celastrales, Oxalidales, Rosales, Cornales, Ericales (The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants) (v. 6)
Klaus Kubitzki | 2004-03-05 00:00:00 | Springer | 489 | Reference

In the present volume - the sixth of this series - 48 flowering plant families comprising a total of 712 genera are treated. They represent the newly designed eurosid orders Celastrales, Oxalidales and Rosales and the asterid orders Cornales and Ericales. The recognition of these ordinal concepts is the result of numerous recent gene sequence analyses which, for the first time in angiosperm systematics, have provided a reliable higher order classification. The concept of Ericales is largely expanded beyond its conventional limits to make it monophyletic and now includes parts of the erstwhile Ebenales, Lecythidales, Primulales and other orders. The revised circumscription of families such as Ericaceae, Celastraceae and Cunoniaceae owes much to the application of recent molecular studies, and for the same reason in the primulalean families, a complete remodeling of family limits is proposed.
