Thermodynamics of Flowing Systems: with Internal Microstructure (Oxford Engineering Science Series)

Thermodynamics of Flowing Systems: with Internal Microstructure (Oxford Engineering Science Series)
Antony N. Beris,Brian J. Edwards | 1994-05-26 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 704 | Engineering
This much-needed monograph presents a systematic, step-by-step approach to the continuum modeling of flow phenomena exhibited within materials endowed with a complex internal microstructure, such as polymers and liquid crystals. By combining the principles of Hamiltonian mechanics with those of irreversible thermodynamics, Antony N. Beris and Brian J. Edwards, renowned authorities on the subject, expertly describe the complex interplay between conservative and dissipative processes. Throughout the book, the authors emphasize the evaluation of the free energy--largely based on ideas from statistical mechanics--and how to fit the values of the phenomenological parameters against those of microscopic models. With Thermodynamics of Flowing Systems in hand, mathematicians, engineers, and physicists involved with the theoretical study of flow behavior in structurally complex media now have a superb, self-contained theoretical framework on which to base their modeling efforts.

Tracers in the Oil Field (Developments in Petroleum Science)
B. Zemel | 1995-01-27 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science | 514 | Engineering
This book is concerned with the application of tracers to a wide variety of oil field operations. It provides the necessary nuclear concepts and techniques which are basic to oil field tracer applications. Laboratory and field techniques are explained and illustrated as are the associated regulatory and safety aspects. Within the book, each area of oil field use is considered separately and specific applications of tracers discussed and relevant literature reviewed. The use of non-radioactive tracers is pointed out wherever it is applicable.

Due to the nature of this competitive industry, much research is poorly documented, thus Tracers in the Oil Field aims to make the technology more available to current users in the oil field.

Environmental Hydraulics for Open Channel Flows

Environmental Hydraulics for Open Channel Flows
Hubert Chanson | 2004-02-27 00:00:00 | Butterworth-Heinemann | 488 | Engineering
Environmental Hydraulics is a new text for students and professionals studying advanced topics in river and estuarine systems. The book contains the full range of subjects on open channel flows, including mixing and dispersion, Saint-Venant equations method of characteristics and interactions between flowing water and its surrondings (air entrainment, sediment transport).

Following the approach of Hubert Chanson's highly successful undergraduate textbook Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow, the reader is guided step-by-step from the basic principles to more advanced practical applications.

Each section of the book contains many revision exercises, problems and assignments to help the reader test their learning in practical situations.

·Complete text on river and estuarine systems in a single volume
·Step-by-step guide to practical applications
·Many worked examples and exercises
Reviews
This book was developed to introduce students, professionals and managers to the challenges of open channel flows and environmental hydraulics. After a concise introduction (Part 1), the second section (Part 2) deals with mixing and dispersion of matter in natural river systems. Part 3 presents an introduction to unsteady open channel flows, and the interactions between flowing water and its surroundings are discussed in Part 4.

Mixing and dispersion of contaminants in natural systems is developed in Part 2. Applications include release of organic and nutrient-rich wastewater into the ecosystem (eg. from treated

sewage effluent), smothering of seagrass and coral, stormwater runoff during flood events, and injection of heated water from an industrial discharge (e.g. at a cooling power plant). For example, during an accidental release of waste occurs in a streams, the water resource scientist needs to predict the arrival time of the contaminant cloud, the peak concentration of solute and the duration of the pollution. Basic theory of molecular diffusion and advection is extended to turbulent advective diffusion in channels. Gradually-varied flow calculations are developed in Part 3. First the basic equations of one-dimensional unsteady open channel flows are presented. That is, the Saint-Venant equations and the method of characteristics. Later simple applications are developed. The

propagation of waves, positive and negative surges are presented, while the dam break wave problem is discussed in the subsequent chapter. Simple numerical models are presented and explained later. There are strong interactions between turbulent water flows and the surrounding environment. Part 4 introduces the basic concepts of the transport of solids, and of the mixing of air and water at free-surfaces.

At the beginning of the book, the reader will find the table of contents, a list of symbols and a glossary of technical terms and names. After the conclusion, a detailed list of references is

presented. The last section presents a correction form. Readers who find an error or mistake are welcome to record the error on the page and to send a copy to the author. [...].

Hydrodynamics (Cambridge Mathematical Library)

Hydrodynamics (Cambridge Mathematical Library)
Sir Horace Lamb M.A. LL.D. Sc.D. F.R.S. | 1991-08-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 764 | Engineering
This reissue of the classic 1932 edition of Lamb's Hydrodynamics is an indication of the lasting value of the work. Constantly in use since its first publication in 1892, this book is the definitive reference work for all fluid dynamicists. The new foreword by Professor R. Caflisch highlights the prominence of this treatise in the field and outlines the development of fluid mechanics that led to its publication. He also resolves possible conflicts with modern notation. Despite the rapid pace of research in modern fluid mechanics study and the advent of high-speed computers, Lamb's work remains a relevant, timeless classic.
Reviews
This is a very classical book on the subject of fluid mechanics, and I was very happy to find a hardcover version. But this version is a big disappointment! Obviously this is a copy of a library book with the call number, the name of the library and other people's writing in it. The worst things are: it is not complete, and it is so blurring that I was not able to read it at all! I found a printing statement in the book saying that this is "due to the very old age and scarcity of this book". I really think Amazon should put this statement in the description of this book! Too bad that I eagerly put my name in the first page, otherwise I definitely will return it.
Reviews
This is an encyclopedic collection of the classical results. And the role this book plays in fluid dynamics is just like Carslaw's classical book does in heat conduction area. It really takes time and endeavor to digest.
Reviews
As noted by other reviewers, this is a classic fluid mechanics reference text, but not suitable for detailed explanations or beginners. It also suffers from the usual fluid mechanics problem of notation, and the notation in this book is a little dated. However, once you get used to the "short article" layout (vs chapters) and the notation, you will treasure and use this book a long time.
Reviews
This book was written in a time when ideas established by men such as Kelvin and Rayleigh were still exciting and new, and it evolved over the decades to remain a classic reference. You'll find many interesting discussions of fundamental ideas in fluid dynamics that most modern books take for granted, as well as novel approaches to some classic problems. There is more emphasis on the set of "exactly-solvable" problems than more modern books, because of the arrival of the computer and the availability of the numerical solution. Finally, this is not quite a textbook but more of a collection of articles, so much so that the earlier articles often reference later ones in the book. It's a good place to learn about aspects of fluid dynamics, but it's not an introduction. It's often not an easy read for someone stil unfamiliar with the required mathematics or dynamical principles, but you do get a unique and valuable perspective.
Reviews
This is, of course, a classic text on fluid dynamics. Expect some work to get through it, though. It is very mathematical and not for the feint-hearted.

Bioinspired Intelligent Nanostructured Interfacial Materials

Bioinspired Intelligent Nanostructured Interfacial Materials
Lei Jiang,Lin Feng | 2010-01-15 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 364 | Engineering
Intelligent materials are emerging composite materials that have boomed since the 1990s. In the 21st century, the variety of intelligent materials is continuously expanding and the domains of which are constantly being broadened. The intelligent material system is of great scientific significance - it combines studies that explore nature, mimic nature and surpass nature, which involve a multitude of structures and functions. It also provides novel ideas, new theories, and cutting-edge methodologies for the innovation of science and technology. Thus, mimicking the microstructures and functions found in nature will build a bridge between biology and technology, which may provide inspirations for solving today's technological problems. Inspired by nature, the authors proposed a concept of Binary cooperative complementary micro/nanoscale interfacial materials. Based on this design concept, the contact and coupling of heterogeneous materials will result in novel properties on the surface or interface of materials, which may create new functional materials and devices. This book gives a complementary introduction about biomimic intelligent micro/nanoscale interfacial materials, devoting largely to the intelligent materials with special wettabilities.

Adaptive Multi-Standard RF Front-Ends (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing)

Adaptive Multi-Standard RF Front-Ends (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing)
Vojkan Vidojkovic,J. van der Tang,Arjan Leeuwenburgh,Arthur H. M. van Roermund | 2008-01-24 00:00:00 | Springer | 194 | Engineering

The design and use of multi-standard RF transceivers is the way to increase hardware flexibility and functionality, as well as to improve the flexibility of set-makers on the market. In the design of multi-standard RF transceivers the efforts will be directed towards improvement of hardware reusability, reconfigurability, programmability and flexibility. This will result in the launching of a software-defined radio.

Since the radio environment is variable, the application of adaptivity in RF transceivers results in the reduction of their power consumption. Eventually, it is reasonable to believe that RF front-ends will be smart in the sense that they will be able to monitor the radio environment and to adapt themselves to the changes in this environment paving the way for a cognitive radio.

Hydrodynamics and Water Quality: Modeling Rivers, Lakes, and Estuaries

Hydrodynamics and Water Quality: Modeling Rivers, Lakes, and Estuaries
Zhen-Gang Ji | 2008-01-28 00:00:00 | Wiley-Interscience | 704 | Engineering
This reference gets you up to speed on mathematical modeling for environmental and water resources management. With a practical, application-oriented approach, it discusses hydrodynamics, sediment processes, toxic fate and transport, and water quality and eutrophication in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters. A companion CD-ROM includes a modeling package and electronic files of numerical models, case studies, and model results. This is a core reference for water quality professionals and an excellent text for graduate students.
Reviews
This is, in my point of view, one of the most useful reference book on a the water quality modeling subject. This book covers almost all the important aspects of developing and applying advanced hydrodynamic and water quality modeling technologies, with well balanced materials on both theory and practical issues. One of the features I like the best of this book is that its describption of water quality modeling as well as its theorectical analysis of governing equations are focused on the advanced and widely applied modeling framework-EFDC, thus through reading this book, workers in this field will not only get quick access of the basic knowledge about water quality modeling, but also the clear guidance on applying the very useful EFDC modeling system.

I will be highly recommending that this book be used in a senior level or graduate environmental engineering classes as a reference book. As a modeler who has worked in the water quality modeling profession for more than 10 years, I feel that with this book, along with several other excelent reference books such as the Chapra or Thomman's surface water quality modeling book (for fundamental concept), and Lung's water quality modeling for TMDL book (for practical guidance on the art of modeling, rather than model itself), one would essentially has everything he need to succeed in realworld,high-end water quality modeling.

Fundamentals of Heat Exchanger Design

Fundamentals of Heat Exchanger Design

Comprehensive and unique source integrates the material usually distributed among a half a dozen sources.
* Presents a unified approach to modeling of new designs and develops the skills for complex engineering analysis.
* Provides industrial insight to the applications of the basic theory developed.
Reviews
This is one of the best, current, single-volume, sources of information for those interested in design theory and performance rating methodology for heat exchangers. This is an advanced text that would be most appropriate for graduate students and practicing engineers in the thermal sciences. An introductory course, or text, on basic heat transfer may be required, for those w/ little background in the area, to appreciate the intensity and wealth of information contained in this text.

There is detailed coverage of some subjects only mentioned in other heat exchanger design books, i.e. the temperature effectiveness (P-NTU) method, longitudinal conduction effects, non-uniform heat transfer coefficients, flow maldistribution, header/manifold design, to name a few.

Comprehensive correlations are well-documented and explained, much of them in generalized and dimensionless forms so they are applicable to a large range of fluids and materials. Quite a bit of tabular data, graphical, and reference information is supplied as well. Some examples are typically worked in each chapter illustrating the analysis technique. The text is well-written and there are few notable errors.

I have only one quibble: there is very little useful thermo-physical property data in the appendices of the textbook. You'll need to find this info. elsewhere. Also, I agree w/ the previous reviewer. Details of heat exchanger mechanical design, fabrication, and construction are not well-covered in this book. You might refer to Kuppan's book (or another source) for more recommendations on construction and materials selections

Bottomline: An excellent, advanced textbook on the thermo-hydraulic design and performance rating of heat exchangers.
Reviews
This book is very good.

To achive 5 stars it needs a construction chapter.

Transition Metals in Supramolecular Chemistry (Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry)
J. P. Sauvage | 1999-06-09 00:00:00 | Wiley-Interscience | 426 | Engineering
Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry will relate recent developments and new exciting approaches in supramolecular chemistry. In supramolecular chemistry, our aim is to understand molecular chemistry beyond the covalent bond - the series will concentrate on goal-orientated supramolecular chemistry. Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry will reflect research which develops supramolecular structures with specific new properties, such as recognition, transport and simulation of biosystems or new materials. The series will cover all areas from theoretical and modelling aspects through organic and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry to materials, solid-state and polymer sciences reflecting the many and varied applications of supramolecular structures in modern chemistry. Transition Metals in Supramolecular Chemistry Edited by Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France The chemistry of weak forces and non-covalent interactions as pioneered by Pedersen, Lehn and Cram is considered to be the origin of modern supramolecular chemistry. 30 years ago transition metals and their complexes were not regarded as important to this science. Transition Metals in Supramolecular Chemistry clearly demonstrates that today, transition metal complexes are routinely used to build large multicomponent architectures which display new and exciting applications including molecular switches, liquid crystals, and molecular magnets. Contents
* Ligand and Metal Control of Self-Assembly in Supramolecular Chemistry
* Bistability in Iron (II) Spin-Crossover Systems: A Supramolecular Function
* Luminescent Sensors with and for Transition Metals
