In the present volume - the sixth of this series - 48 flowering plant families comprising a total of 712 genera are treated. They represent the newly designed eurosid orders Celastrales, Oxalidales and Rosales and the asterid orders Cornales and Ericales. The recognition of these ordinal concepts is the result of numerous recent gene sequence analyses which, for the first time in angiosperm systematics, have provided a reliable higher order classification. The concept of Ericales is largely expanded beyond its conventional limits to make it monophyletic and now includes parts of the erstwhile Ebenales, Lecythidales, Primulales and other orders. The revised circumscription of families such as Ericaceae, Celastraceae and Cunoniaceae owes much to the application of recent molecular studies, and for the same reason in the primulalean families, a complete remodeling of family limits is proposed.

I have been searching for an atlas that would cover the events of World War I. Most of the ones I was considering had very few maps, and mainly contained photographs, general text of the events, and small maps lacking in detail. Any atlas that was specifically created for maps was geared towards current poitical borders and lacking in historical data. I was delighted when I received this atlas from Amazon and saw that it was maps, maps, and more maps, each highlighted by specific World War I era historical information. I have studied about a dozen of the maps thus far, and have been very happy, apart from one detail. Queen Victoria is referred to as Kaiser Wilhelm's aunt, rather than his grandmother. It remains to be seen if there are other minor factual errors in the remainder of the book. Apart from that, it is a perfect tool to aid in the study of the era.

The first edition of The Routledge Atlas of the First World War was published in 1970, and this new edition is extremely useful for readers interested in the conflict. Martin Gilbert has amassed something like 200 maps that cover various aspects of the First World. However, readers should realize that this is not a battle atlas that will depict every battle in great detail; rather, Gilbert's intent is to use maps to graphically portray many of the factors that shaped the war but that are often glossed over in textual accounts. While Gilbert does include maps of individual battles and campaigns, this atlas is designed to give the reader a fuller understanding of the political, military, economic and social factors that ultimately determined the outcome. Readers should also be advised that this atlas is heavily Anglo-centric, with only minimal coverage of the Eastern Front. The contributions of the French, Italians and Romanians are virtually absent from this volume. Despite this glaring bias, this atlas is still a useful reference tool (unless you are researching the French, Italian or Romanian armies).

The Routledge Atlas of the First World War consists of ten sections, five covering a single year of the war, one covering the prelude to war, one each on the war at sea and in the air, a section on the global war, and an aftermath. The section on prelude to war covers many well-known issues - such as the alliance system in Europe, the Berlin-Baghdad Railway, and ethnic politics in the Balkans - but it is nice to have all these put together in one graphic package. Oddly, there is no map detailing the various crises that preceded the war, such as the 1908 Bosnian Annexation Crisis.

The section on 1914 is good, covering the main campaigns on the East and Western Fronts, as well as naval actions overseas and the fate of the German colonies. Two significant omissions are the lack of a map of the Austrian invasion of Serbia or the French Plan XVII offensive that led to the Battle of the Frontiers. The section on 1915 is rather lame, with over-focus on British operations in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia, but only a handful of maps on the Eastern Front. Even the Western Front is down-played in the 1915 section, with no mention of the British Loos or Neuve Chapelle offensives, or any French operations. The 1916 section is also skimpy on non-British issues, with only one simple map of Verdun and no coverage of the Brusilov offensive.

The section on the air war is quite interesting, with maps depicting German zeppelin raids over England, London's air defenses, and British air raids on Germany. The section on the naval war has interesting maps of the British blockade, food riots in Germany, Allied merchant ship losses in the Mediterranean and in British waters, and American ship-building. The section on 1917 is better than the earlier sections on 1915-1916, with very nice maps of the underground mines at Messines Ridge, 3rd Ypres and several maps on the Eastern Front. The section on 1918 is also interesting, although the belated inclusion of a single map on the Italian Front is rather telling about the Anglo-centric nature of this volume. Certainly the most informative section of the Atlas is that covering the world at war, which has maps depicting the various war aims, India and the Commonwealth's contributions, British munitions production and British supplies to the Allies. While this book contains a lot of great material for those of us studying shastric literature, it is also a endlessly frustrating book. WHy? because the geniuses at Colombia University didn't actually check the pagination against their index. the result is this: reading Nyaayamañjurii, one comes across the term 'ity uktvaa'. One looks it up in Scholastic Sanskrit's index, which notes the term to be treated on page 214. One turns to 214 and finds no mention of 'ity uktvaa'



After paying for this book, I feel like writing professor Tubbs (a wonderful scholar) and aither asking for my money back or asking for a new index.



I expect better from these Ivy League scholars and I expect better for the money.

This book covers some basic approaches for reading Sanskrit commentaries. The examples are taken from poetical and philosophical commentaries, but it is stated in the intro that it is beneficial for all commentaries readings.



I found this book incredibly useful - particularly with the "small stuff" -- specific terms and conventions, some Panini rules etc. Although I am far from exhausting this book, I feel it did me an important service in familiarizing myself with commentarial texts.



A paperback cover would be more appropiate for this kind of manual in my view.

I had the good fortune to study Sanskrit for several years at an Ivy League University. Unfortunately, I was never able to take a class that involved a great deal of use of the commentaries that seem to accompany all major Sanskrit texts. I would just use them, when I could, to find word divisions, undo sandhi, etc.

Several years ago, I began to try to teach myself the commentatorial style. A former professor told me that the only works he knew of in Western languages on this style were a chapter in Teach Yourself Sanskrit Complete Course (Teach Yourself Language Complete Courses) and a German work, Nominale Ausdrucksformen im wissenschaftlichen Sanskrit - written in - at least to me - an impenetrable style of German, though I am told it is an essential text.

Then I ordered "Scholastic Sanskrit". I can not overemphasize how valuable it has become to me in the few short weeks I have owned it. It serves both as a reference text, and a teaching tool. It explains with example after example all the formulaic expressions that occurr in Sanskrit commentaries, such as ityarthah, -adi, etena...iti, and on and on and on!

The style is completely lucid and seems geared towards those, like myself, who are trying to learn this style without the benefit of a teacher. I have read only about the first 50 pages or so, but, with this text in hand, I am now able to see nuances and meaning in commentaries, where before I had just found frustrating confusion.

The authors recommend using the text in conjuction with the Anubandhas of Panini (Publications of the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit), which I have also found quite helpful.

I am using "Scholastic Sanskrit" along with Panditaraja Jagannatha's Gangalahari: With the commentary by Sri Sadasiva & English translation. This text provides a Sanskrit commentary on the poem with a literal - and thoughtful - English translation. I cannot reccommend either of the books too highly for those trying to learn how to read Sanskrit commentaries without a guru. (I can also thoroughly reccommend the Ramopakhyana - The Story of Rama in the Mahabharata: A Sanskrit Independent-Study Reader )

My only negative comment on the book is that the indexes in the back sometimes provide references that are off by 2-4 pages. A minor point.

A study of the literary dynamics of the divine-human encounter as reflected in biblical narrative. An examination of the literary and theological dynamics of the divine-human encounter as reflected in theophany narratives in the Hebrew Bible. The point of departure for this study is a type-scene analysis which reveals a common structure to theophany narratives. Beginning with the separation of the protagonist from human society, the text moves to a visual and verbal revelation by the Deity, and records a range of human reactions to the experience. Each of the texts concludes with a description of a more externalized reaction, which marks the carrying over of the experience into a larger societal framework. The analysis develops the underlying structural and contentual similarity among texts which have traditionally been understood as belonging to different literary genres. The discussion offers a nuanced treatment of the range of literary strategies employed by the narrative for addressing these elements. In addition to a detailed analysis of each of the above components of the type-scene, there is discussion of issues such as the idea of the lethal nature of the encounter and intertextual relations between the narratives. The investigation and control of foodborne disease outbreaks are multi-disciplinary tasks requiring skills in the areas of clinical medicine, epidemiology, laboratory medicine, food microbiology and chemistry, food safety and food control, and risk communication and management. Many outbreaks of foodborne disease are poorly investigated, if at all, because these skills are unavailable or because a field investigator is expected to master them all single-handedly without having been trained.

These guidelines have been written for public health practitioners, food and health inspectors, district and national medical officers, laboratory personnel and others who may undertake or participate in the investigation and control of foodborne disease outbreaks.

While the book focuses on practical aspects of outbreak investigation and control, it also provides generic guidance that can be adapted to individual countries and local requirements.
