"Target Band 7" is a very useful quick review on IELTS academic module. When it arrived, I felt a little unease about the thickness of the book--it which was much thinner than I expected. The contents are, in fact, loaded with easy to read concise hints and suggestions.



As a previous reviewer mentioned, the book does not contain Listening CD/ Texts or Reading materials. You would need the other books for the actual exam samples. However, it presents good classified examples of the first part of Writing section (charts and graphs description) and some essay topics for the second part. (It might be helpful if the book is used along with the website, IELTS-Blog by the same author which puts eight sample answers up for the second part of writing section.)



Overall, I thought "Target Band 7" is a good review book for quickly getting useful ideas and techniques which can be read both before starting to tackle IELTS and after the completion of certain numbers of sample tests.

You know they say you can't make an omlette without breaking eggs. That's what the book is all about then. That's something that you say which means it is difficult to achieve something important without causing any unpleasant effects. At first I just didn't consider Target Band 7 a serious coursebook at all but then things changed suddenly for me. I read the free e-book chapter then found invaluable information that turned out to be one of the most inestimable and rare ingridients of how to make an omlette, of how to pass the exam in other words. If IELTS is an omlette and I have my precious recipe book then, let's see how appetizing my stuff will be on the real day of the examination. Recommended of course, mouthwatering I'd rather say.

No matter how mathematics achievement and persistence are measured, African Americans seem to lag behind their peers. This state of affairs is typically explained in terms of student ability, family background, differential treatment by teachers, and biased curricula. But what can explain disproportionately poor performance and persistence of African-American students who clearly possess the ability to do well, who come from varied family and socioeconomic backgrounds, who are taught by caring and concerned teachers, and who learn mathematics in the context of a reform-oriented mathematics curriculum? And, why do some African-American students succeed in mathematics when underachievement is the norm among their fellow students? Danny Martin addresses these questions in Mathematics Success and Failure Among African-American Youth, the results of a year-long ethnographic and observational study of African-American students and their parents and teachers.

Mathematics Success and Failure Among African-American Youth goes beyond the conventional explanations of ability, socioeconomic status, differential treatment, and biased curricula to consider the effects of history, community, and peers--and the individual agency that allows some students to succeed despite these influences. Martin's analysis suggests that prior studies of mathematics achievement and persistence among African Americans have failed to link sociohistorical, community, school, and intrapersonal forces in sufficiently meaningful ways, and that they suffer from theoretical and methodological limitations that hinder the ability of mathematics educators to reverse the negative achievement and persistence trends that continue to afflict African-American students.

The analyses and findings offered in Martin's book lead to exciting implications for future research and intervention efforts concerning African-American students--and other students for whom history and context play an important role. This book will be useful and informative to many groups: mathematics education researchers, education researchers interested in the social context of learning and teaching, policymakers, preservice and in-service teachers, students, parents, and community advocates. We started with grades 2-3 and I love these books! They have helped us move forward in Science like few other books I've used in the past 10 years. They are informative and fun. Read and Understand Science is filled with good activities, and the chapters are long enough to cover the concepts without becoming tedious. My favorite part is that it teaches key concepts without incorporating experiments too difficult to pull off in my kitchen!

We have found this book to be interesting to the student. After reading the experiments/stories, the student answers questions about what he has read. This requires comprehension and understanding. The questions are geared to require some thinking and expression by him. When called on to do experiments, he is eager to determine if the experiment will work. Often, he insists that someone else watch how it works as he does it over. I believe he is enjoying this Science curriculum and will be finished with it in record time.

This book is a full reference grammar of Qiang, one of the minority languages of southwest China, spoken by about 70,000 Qiang and Tibetan people in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in northern Sichuan Province. It belongs to the Qiangic branch of Tibeto-Burman (one of the two major branches of Sino-Tibetan). The dialect presented in the book is the Northern Qiang variety spoken in Ronghong Village, Yadu Township, Chibusu District, Mao County. This book, the first book-length description of the Qiang language in English, is the result of many years of work on the language, and is as typologically comprehensive as possible. It includes not only the reference grammar, but also an ethnological overview, several fully analyzed texts (mostly traditional stories), and an annotated glossary.

The language is verb final, agglutinative (prefixing and suffixing), and has both head-marking and dependent marking morphology. The phonology of Qiang is quite complex, with 39 consonants at seven points of articulation, plus complex consonant clusters, both in initial and final position, as well as vowel harmony, vowel length distinctions, and a set of retroflexed vowels. The grammar also is complex, with a paradigm of eight direction marking verbal prefixes, and two paradigms for person marking, one for actor, one for non-actor, and a variety of other verbal prefixes and suffixes, as well as definite and number marking on nouns. Noun phrases take classifiers and relational pospositions as well.

Dr. Lapolla and Chenglong Huang have done every linguist, anthropologist and historian that is interested in the so-called "Qiangic" branch of the Tibeto-Burman family a huge favor through this unpresedented work. In a very thorough manner these first-class linguists give you a flavor for the Qiang variety spoken in Ronghong. Apart from being a excellently detailed grammar for the Sino-Tibetan linguistics specialist, LAPOLLA and HUANG also briefly discuss the Qiang's location, culture, architecture, food, clothing, kinship relations, religion, mobility, and livelihood for the Asian studies or history generalist. It is pointed out again that these people are difficult to label, partly due to the political agenda of the Chinese. "Qiang" is the ethnonym that the Chinese have given them, not they themselves originally chose. "The majority of Qiang speakers, roughly eighty thousand people, are members of the Qiang ethnicity, and the rest, approximately fifty thousand people, are a subgroup of the Tibetan ethnicity. These ethnic designations are what they call themselves in Chinese. In Qiang they all call themselves /rme/ or a dialect variant of this word. Not all members of the Qiang ethnicity speak Qiang, and as just mentioned, not all of those who speak Qiang are considered members of the Qiang ethnicity" (pg. 20).

The "Text" section also includes some entertaining folk stories by the Qiang (such as "The Story of the Lazy Man" and "The Creation of the World") that include a Qiang/English interlinear version and an English free translation. "The Story of the Lazy Man" includes a humorous section about an (Qiangic?) emperor who loses his expensive parrot but finds it while using the toilet in the Han Chinese area! These are wonderful stories for Qiangic studies (maybe even for Sino-Qiangic relations?) and for the general world of the folklore student/scholar.

However, obviously not all the answers are here for the "Qiangic question." Of course one grammar that is produced on the basis of one village cannot suffice for the diversity that is found among not only the other Qiangic languages, but the great variety within Qiang itself. Extensive research is still needed to understand this facinating sub-field within Tibeto-Burman linguistics. But it is a step in the right direction, and a monumental one at that.

If you are interested in things Qiangic, or any of the world's endangered ethnolinguistic peoples for that matter, this is a must for you.
