Reviews
Great book, especially if you are new to the medical field.

Love the item, hate the confusion of Amazon delivery svc online.

Reviews
I'm disapointed with this book, it's not quite what I expected.Allmost all cardiac emergencies are depicted with the old guidelines, that have been changed by the ILCOR in 2005.Treatment options are OK but there are many topics missing, could REALLY be better
Reviews
ICU rotation can always be intimidating for residents, especially the first one. Most of us start searching for a source to read as anxiety builds up. Everybody suggests Marino's "The ICU Book", which is OK, but needs time and it is not well balanced. This small book is a great source. You can quickly read it and refresh your knowledge before starting your rotation. During the rotation, you will be able to quickly review the topic and make sure you are not missing anything. I would highly recommend it.
Reviews
My internship we had open ICU's...so virtually every night I was stuck caring for critical patients in one of the ICUs. As a transitional resident, I had no interest in reading the Marino ICU book (which was in need of some updating). This book has everything you need to survive and help you manage even very sick patients while on call at night. I carried this book and the Ferri book in my labcoat as references in addition to some others on my PDA. This book is very concise, and will update you in just a few minutes on most issues you may face in the ICU/critical care medicine setting. Highly recommend for transitional residents, especially for those who would have no need to purchase larger more comprehensive references such as those going into medicine or anesthesiology. For those going into Ophthalmology, Radiology, etc.. this book is perfect.
Reviews
fits nicely into your lab coat. very handy for those 1-2 second glances when you need to confirm some issues in the ICU. Of course this isn't a textbook which will tell you everything but a very helpful guide to be carrying along as a med student or junior resident rotating in the icu or internal medicine rotation. good bang for your buck

Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine, Second Edition (Legato, Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine)

Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine, Second Edition (Legato, Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine)
Marianne J. Legato | 2009-12-03 00:00:00 | Academic Press | 800 | Internal Medicine
The field of gender-specific medicine examines how normal human biology and physiology differs between men and women and how the diagnosis and treatment of disease differs as a function of gender. This revealing research covers various conditions that predominantly occur in men as well conditions that predominantly occur in women. Among the areas of greatest difference are cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, the immune system, lung cancer as a consequence of smoking, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, and infectious diseases.

The Second Edition of Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine will decrease in size from two to one volume and focus on the essentials of gender-specific medicine. In response to the market as well as many of the reviewers' suggestions, the Editor has eliminated approximately 55 chapters from the first edition to make the book more compact and more focused on the essentials of gender-specific medicine. The content will be completely updated, redundant sections and chapters will be merged with others that are more relevant to the current study of sex and gender differences in human physiology and pathophysiology.

  • Editor has eliminated approximately 55 chapters from the first edition to make the book more compact and more focused on the essentials of gender-specific medicine.

  • Longer bibliographies and suggested reviews/papers of particular relevance and importance will be added at the end of each section.

  • Each author will be asked to include recent meta-analysis of data

  • Each chapter will progress translationally from the basic science to the clinical applications of gender-specific therapies, drugs, or treatments

  • Section on drug metabolism will be eliminated but the subject will be incorporated into each relevant chapter

  • Section on aging will be eliminated but age will be considered as a variable in each of the separate chapters

Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease

Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease
Daniela Galimberti | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Nova Biomedical Books | 307 | Internal Medicine
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the deposition into the brain of amyloid peptide, which originates a cascade of inflammatory events leading eventually to neuronal death. These pathological events likely occur several years before the clinical manifestation of the disease, implying that potential therapeutical interventions are currently started too late to give beneficial results. Recently, growing attention has been paid to the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), considered the prodromal phase of AD, as 80 per cent of subjects with MCI have been shown to develop AD within 5 years. Several studies aimed to identify biological markers to differentiate between normal aging and incipient AD have been carried out, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and neuroimaging. In particular, the evaluation of CSF Amyloid beta (1-42) levels, together with tau and phospotau, are of help for recognizing early AD. Besides, a number of additional molecules are altered in CSF. Other early modifications have been observed in peripheral cells, such as fibroblasts and leukocytes, as well as in serum from patients. Biomarkers for AD represent important tools supporting the clinical diagnosis and the choice of potential therapeutic options. Moreover, they would be of great help for the selection of cohorts of homogeneous patients for clinical trials with new disease-modifying compounds. This book is aimed to give an update about MCI as prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD), to discuss the main known pathological mechanisms at the basis of AD and to describe the possible biomarkers to be used for an early diagnosis of the disease.

Measurement Error and Misclassification in Statistics and Epidemiology: Impacts and Bayesian Adjustments

Measurement Error and Misclassification in Statistics and Epidemiology: Impacts and Bayesian Adjustments
Paul Gustafson | 2003-09-25 00:00:00 | Chapman and Hall/CRC | 200 | Internal Medicine
Mismeasurement of explanatory variables is a common hazard when using statistical modeling techniques, and particularly so in fields such as biostatistics and epidemiology where perceived risk factors cannot always be measured accurately. With this perspective and a focus on both continuous and categorical variables, Measurement Error and Misclassification in Statistics and Epidemiology: Impacts and Bayesian Adjustments examines the consequences and Bayesian remedies in those cases where the explanatory variable cannot be measured with precision. The author explores both measurement error in continuous variables and misclassification in discrete variables, and shows how Bayesian methods might be used to allow for mismeasurement. A broad range of topics, from basic research to more complex concepts such as "wrong-model" fitting, make this a useful research work for practitioners, students and researchers in biostatistics and epidemiology."

OrgoCards: Organic Chemistry Review

OrgoCards: Organic Chemistry Review
Steven Q. Wang,Babak Razani,Edward J.K. Lee,Jennifer Wu,William Berkowitz | 2002-03-30 00:00:00 | Barron's Educational Series | 160 | Internal Medicine
For years, college students in pre-med courses, or majoring in biology, chemical engineering, and many other science courses have searched for a study aid of this kind, but have come up empty-handed. Now, Barron's has precisely what they've been seeking! OrgoCards is a set of more than 160 5 1/2" x 7" cards that summarize reactions and reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry. A sophisticated variation on the time-proven "flashcard" method of study, the cards summarize organic reactions in 21 functional groups, such as alcohols and alkenes. Card number-one in each group outlines the group's physical and chemical properties. Each subsequent card explains a specific reaction, starting with a diagram of the reaction, and followed by a Keys section that summarizes the most important data related to this reaction. Following the list of Keys is a Notes section giving miscellaneous information. The back of each card contains a detailed reaction Mechanism, in both text and diagram forms. OrgoCards emphasize repetition and serve as aids to memorization to prepare students for examinations. These flashcard-style summaries highlight organic chemistry data that is vital for success on tests, fostering the student's comprehension in ways that standard textbooks cannot do. Organic chemistry is a required course in most college-level science programs, and knowledge of the subject is a requirement for success in admissions tests for medical, dental, and veterinary schools everywhere. Here is the learning tool that successful students will be turning to!
Reviews
orgo cards are amazing, i used the cards as a study guide for o-chem, i got an A in the first part and aiming for an A in the second part right now. much better than the text, everything is clearly explained and nothing is confusing, excellent way of studying mechanism which are clearly depicted on the back of the cards, has everything you need to know to understand and pass o-chem with a good grade, worth every penny!!!!
Reviews
These cards are very useful and convenient for memorizing, and are carefully edited to include only the important reactions. I especially love that they draw out each reaction's mechanism. They have more details than what flash cards are supposed to have, but I find that most of the details are important and must be remembered (e.g. syn- or anti-; E1 or E2). Your own flash cards may easily miss out those important details.
Reviews
After buying these cards I realized that the real study value of flash cards is making them for yourself. That has to account for at least half of the learning that you do. These pre-packaged cards are too general, cover too much material on each card and really didn't work for me because they weren't tailored to my specific needs. I ended up making my own the same way that I always do. Live and learn.
Reviews
As a Biochemistry graduate who took Organic Chemistry and went on to TA it for two years, I found these to be unhelpful in the process. The material was structured somewhat sensibly, but in a order very different from our textbook. This made using them more work than it was worth, as our in book chapter summaries were far more useful. These have sat on the shelf and collected dust for years and I don't foresee them ever becoming useful. On a side note - they have a horrendous chemical smell from something in the production process.

If you're looking for something to help you succeed in O-Chem, buy a Molecular Model kit or a Study/ Solution guide for your textbook. These will actually be helpful, while these study cards will likely be of little use in conjunction with a course.
Reviews
These cards don't help at all. They are basically just an abridged text book (paragraphs and all) printed on 200+ separate cards. In fact, my textbook has more useful summarization tables, examples and diagrams. Furthermore the cards themselves are bulky and cumbersome to hold. If I hadn't taken the plastic off, I would take them back.

Mortality and Maldevelopment: Part I: congenital cardiovascular malformations (Pt. 1)

Mortality and Maldevelopment: Part I: congenital cardiovascular malformations (Pt. 1)
Harold Kalter | 2007-07-11 00:00:00 | Springer | 222 | Internal Medicine

Congenital malformations are worldwide occurrences, they know no national borders, do not distinguish between races, ethnicities, rich or poor. These severe physical abnormalities, present at birth, happen more often than is usually realized, once in every 33 births. They strike every part of the body, limbs, head, heart, and all others.

The most frequent of them all are the many types of malformations of the cardiovascular system, the heart and its blood vessels, which happen in about once in every 250 births. Study of these conditions during the twentieth century took many forms, revolving about examination and analysis of their causes, genetic, nongenetic, and complex. To aid in unraveling the complexities of this causation, various influences on their frequency are considered, among them social conditions, maternal health, birthweight, newborn maturity. And of course the known and possible environmental bases of their occurrence are fully described.

The relation of infant death to cardiovascular malformation is noted; and puzzlement that the level of such deaths had not kept pace with the reduction of infant death itself and of that associated with other kinds of malformations during this period.

An introductory record of the history of perinatal mortality in the last three centuries gives foundation for the discussion of death in contemporary decades.

BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Endocrinology (BSAVA British Small Animal Veterinary Association)
Carmel T. Mooney,Mark E. Peterson | 2004-07-23 00:00:00 | BSAVA | 248 | Internal Medicine
Building on the success of previous editions, the BSABA Manual of Canine and Feline Endocrinology 3rd Edition provides a practical, clinically oriented approach to canine and feline endocrinology with the most up-to-date information for veterinary surgeons, nurses, technicians and those interested in the field.

The book is divided into four sections. The first section discusses hormone measurements and special sample handling requirements, before providing a quick-reference section on test protocols and assay results.

The second section is updated from the previous edition and investigates the clinical problems and laboratory abnormalities associated with endocrine disorders.

Complete and detailed chapters on the most common endocrine disorders encountered in dogs and cats follow in the third section and it is here that the greatest differences from the last edition are evident. The revolutionary advances in endocrinology, including the use of trilostane for the management of hyperadrenocorticism and new information on the aetiology of feline diabetes mellitus, are discussed in depth.

The final section of the Manual focuses on the uncommon and emerging endocrine disorders that affect dogs and cats. The majority of the information is reviewed and updated from the last manual, but new to this edition are chapter son unusual thyroid disorders (covering both feline hypothyroidism and canine hyperthyroidism), insulinoma and feline hypoadrenocorticism.

Neuroscience, Fourth Edition

Neuroscience, Fourth Edition
Dale Purves | 2008-07-31 00:00:00 | Sinauer Associates, Inc. | 857 | Internal Medicine
Neuroscience is a comprehensive textbook created primarily for medical, premedical, and undergraduate students. In a single concise and approachable volume, the text guides students through the challenges and excitement of this rapidly changing field. The book s length and accessibility of its writing are a successful combination that has proven to work equally well for medical students and in undergraduate neuroscience courses. Being both comprehensive and authoritative, the book is also appropriate for graduate and professional use.
Reviews
Received the book in good condition and in good time. Noticed some highlighting in the book that I don't think was mentioned, but I bought it used so I guess it was to be expected. Satisfied overall.
Reviews
...the summaries of chapters are not well-written and do not convey the most important points. Nonetheless, this textbook covers all the areas of neuroscience and the text itself is easy to read and to learn.
Reviews
The book arrived two weeks after the estimated arrival, and so I missed 2 weeks of valuable study time with it. I'm never buying used books on Amazon again.
Reviews
This book is being used for one of my grad classes that I am taking with an undergrad class. It is very understandable, and the figures are of great help to the text. Some of it does get into great detail, and other sections need to be explained with more detail, but other than that, it's an excellent book. It is an interesting read for Neuroscience. The book also came with a DVD used for tutorials, as well as visuals for the brain. It's very helpful and very interesting.
Reviews
A good teaching book. Information is clear and up to date and very well presented. So, it is very didactical.

Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology: A Case Based Approach

Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology: A Case Based Approach
Jawad Ahmad | 2010-11-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 440 | Internal Medicine
Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology: A Case Based Approach presents a collection of interesting cases in liver disease seen at a very busy and large liver transplant center in the United States. These cases cover the full range of pathology that an internist or gastroenterologist may expect to see in a lifetime of taking care of patients with acute or chronic liver disease, before or after liver transplant. Each case is presented as you would see it in a clinical situation where a patient presents a complaint or something is noted on exam or blood work. The question/answer format will help one through the problem of making a diagnosis or in considering a differential diagnosis and also point to the best way to manage each condition. The volume is divided into pre-transplant and post-transplant hepatology. Each case is 3 pages with the first page presenting the case and pertinent lab data and 3-4 questions (i.e. differential diagnosis, tests to order, x-rays/CT required). The second page illustrates the tests, scans, biopsies and asks for the pertinent findings. The third page provides the diagnosis and what may have been expected with other diagnoses. Here is a single source dealing with questions specific for patients with complications of advanced liver disease and also clinical situations seen in transplant hepatology. Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology: A Case Based Approach will have great appeal to anyone in hepatology/transplant hepatology and also to residents/fellows and internists interested in gastroenterology.
