Product Description:

Despite the growth of interest in the study of terrorism since 9/11, terrorism analysts rarely take a multidisciplinary approach to the subject. This leaves a number of terrorism's characteristics to be explored in new and unique ways. Terrorism's Unanswered Questions brings together scholars from the fields of criminology, international relations, law, political science, security studies, and sociology to answer several important questions where consensus has yet to be reached. Each chapter offers a new approach to the question asked that is both unique and challenges popular thought. The result is an original work appealing to a broad audience of scholars and students who desire to develop a better understanding of terrorism's characteristics.

In the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States terrorism became a topic for the masses to explore, rather than the hidden purview of analysts and scholars tucked away at the CIA or in the ivory tower. Now, more than five years later, there remains much to be discovered about terrorism and its causes. This volume takes a look at some of terrorism's unanswered questions. How do we define terrorism? What threat does the United States face from weapons of mass destruction? Why has international law failed to stop terrorism? These are but three of the questions addressed in this volume. While the editors do not claim to have all of the answers, they do promise a view of terrorism not seen before.

Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Chicago (Irreverent Guides)

Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Chicago (Irreverent Guides)
Elizabeth Canning Blackwell | 2004-10-29 00:00:00 | Frommers | 254 | North America
Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world.

Chi-town has never seemed as vibrantly alive as it does in the pages of Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Chicago, a book that tells the story of the real Chicago, from an insider's standpoint. With its muscular past and its bustling present, Chicago is a workable city of serendipitous surprises: the glorious vastness of Lake Michigan, the smooth jazz vibe, and the self-effacing Midwestern sensibility--it may be more Big Easy than the Big Easy. In Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Chicago you get the straight scoop on all the places the locals love.
Reviews
Like all Irreverent Guides, this title showcases all the highlights the city and surrounding area have to offer. Compact, easy to use and highly informative.
Reviews
What I love most about the irreverent guides (I own the ones for Boston and for SF) is that they're straight forward, quick-witted, and give you very interesting tidbits about local history. It's like getting the inside scoop from your best friend vs the information kiosk.

So the fact that the sharp wit is missing from the Chicago guide is a nuisance. In fact, I really can't say it's irreverent or funny at all. Almost as if someone from Frommer's traditional guide staff -- or perhaps, an attendant at the information kiosk -- wrote it. The recommendations are good enough, but if you're looking for humor to go along with it, you won't find it here.
Reviews
disappointing to say the least - much of the book looked as if it had been recopied at kinko's. the maps were extremely hard to read - no color at all. i can't quite figure what's supposed to be irreverent in the book unless it's the fact that every so often the author says something less than favorable about a site or restaurant. save your money.
Reviews
I spent my first 18 years around and in Chicago, so I was very curious to see what the Irreverent people suggested about my hometown of sorts. A word of warning... there is the usual quibble that applies to all of the irreverent books: they are more designed for reading a whole section at once, as the organization scatters litle info-nuggets about one particular place across a number of different sections. With that being said, the index in the back can guide you to the relevant pages for a specific place you are looking for.

All in all, I found this an incredibly fun and informative book that covers a large range of establishments and attractions in the few hundred pages it was given. It seems aimed at the younger or more adventurous traveler. Let's face it, almost everyone knows the Field Museum, the Art Institute, Brookfield Zoo, Sears Tower, etc. What this guide will help you do is find a great nightclub buried in the industrial district (Crobar), the surreal summer sports customs (16-inch softball!), the famous Frank Lloyd Wright architecture that is spattered around the city (Roble House), alternative shopping complexes (Belmont and Clark), where to grab a drink before a Cubs game (Cubby Bear), and famous local theater (Steppenwolf).

So if you are traveling to Chicago, and want to get a feel for the city that isn't completely upper-middle class and whitewashed (which the traditional Frommer's and such can fall prey to quite often), this book would be a great travel guide to help you out. It's even an interesting read for people living *in* Chicago, as there were a number of places in the book I was not familiar with which sound like quite a good time.

John Michael Crichton (born October 23, 1942) is an American author, film producer, film director, and television producer. His best-known works are techno-thriller novels, films and television programs. His works are usually based on the action genre and heavily feature technology. Many of his future history novels have medical or scientific underpinnings, reflecting his medical training and science background.

Jurassic Park is a techno-thriller novel written by Michael Crichton that was published in 1990. Often considered a cautionary tale on unconsidered biological tinkering in the same spirit as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, it uses the mathematical concept of chaos theory and its philosophical implications to explain the collapse of an amusement park showcasing certain genetically recreated dinosaur species. It was adapted into a film in 1993.

The Lost World is a techno-thriller novel by Michael Crichton, published in 1995 by Ballantine Books. A paperback edition (ISBN 0-345-40288-X) was issued in New York in 1996. It is a sequel to his earlier novel Jurassic Park. Like Arthur Conan Doyle's novel of the same name, Crichton's novel concerns an expedition to an isolated Central American location where dinosaurs roam - though in this case, the dinosaurs were recreated by genetic engineering, rather than surviving from antiquity.

Airframe is a novel by Michael Crichton, first published in hardback edition in 1996 and as a paperback edition in 1997 by Ballantine Books. The plot follows Casey Singleton, a quality assurance vice-president at the fictional aerospace manufacturer Norton Aircraft, as she investigates an in-flight accident aboard a Norton-manufactured airliner that leaves three passengers dead and fifty-six injured.
In Airframe as in most of his novels, Crichton uses the false document literary device, presenting numerous technical documents to create a sense of authenticity. Several real-life incidents are also explored; the accident itself is closely modeled on a 1993 accident aboard a McDonnell-Douglas MD-11.

Congo. The novel centers on an expedition searching for diamonds in the dense rain forest of Congo.

Disclosure is a novel by Michael Crichton, released in 1994. The novel is set in a fictional high tech company, just before the beginning of the dot-com economic boom. The plot concerns protagonist Tom Sanders, and his battle against unfounded allegations of sexual harassment.

Eaters of the Dead: The Manuscript of Ibn Fadlan Relating His Experiences with the Northmen in A.D. 922 is a 1976 novel by Michael Crichton. Crichton explains in an appendix that the book was based on two sources. The first three chapters are a retelling of Ibn Fadlan's personal account of his actual story journey northwards and his experiences with and observations of the Rus', the early Russian people. The remainder is based upon the story of Beowulf.

Prey is a techno-thriller novel by Michael Crichton first published in hardback edition in November 2002 and as a paperback edition in November 2003 by Harper Collins. According to IMDB there will be a film adaptation due out in 2007; details are unavailable. Like Jurassic Park, the novel serves as a cautionary tale about developments in science and technology; in this case, nanotechnology. The book features relatively new advances in the computing/scientific community, such as artificial life, emergence (and by extension, complexity), genetic algorithms, and agent-based computing.

Sphere is a science fiction novel written by Michael Crichton and published in 1987. It was made into the film Sphere in 1998. The novel follows a psychologist named Norman Johnson, who is called upon by the U.S. Navy to join a team of scientists ass

From Newton's Sleep (Volume 0)

From Newton's Sleep (Volume 0)
Joseph Vining | 1996-12-09 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 414 | Philosophy
What does the presence of law say of the beliefs of individuals in a society--their actual beliefs--about language, themselves, the world around them?

In a strikingly original work intended not only for practicing lawyers but for anyone interested in the modern dilemma of the loss of meaning, Joseph Vining invites us to reconsider law as a unique form of thought, inseparably connected to everything in the world that makes up human identity. Oliver Wendell Holmes asserted at the end of the nineteenth century that human law is ultimately a phenomenon in quantitative relations to its causes and effects, and many have been left with an impression of law as a set of processes and rules. Vining takes issue with this and with various reductionist attempts in scientific thought today to express the universe in a single mathematical description of forces, as well as with post-structuralist speculation that there are no valid truth claims, and that human inter-action can be reduced to analysis of power relationships. Law, he argues, is an independent discourse, not reducible to any other, that exists only in human interaction and reflects continuing human worth. Vining's search to reinstate the spiritual dimension in public discourse brings him head-on with a wide array of powerful academic forces: linguistics theory, political science, the new historicism, and the traditional teaching of law.

This book consists of a collection of what Vining calls "amplifications" of the implied text of the law--impressions, commentaries, vignettes, poems, and dialogues--which illustrate aspects of conventional legal language and logic, and the subjects legal practice regularly deals with, such as promises, death, and crime. Throughout we see that law reaches deeply into the way we know ourselves and other persons, all of whom speak through law as law connects language to person and person to action. The texts generated by legal method constitute the living record of social acquaintance and contest, speaking across cultures and across centuries. It is the close reading of legal texts and contexts, Vining argues, that provides the present source of the transcendental in modern secular life. But unlike the other academic arts of interpretation, law alone is directly connected with the most real, the most particular and, at the same time, the most universal facts of social life.

From Newton's Sleep poses ultimate questions for a century that now approaches its end, casts doubt on certainties past and present, and creates new grounds for skepticism and conviction. The fragmentary form of the book mirrors its subject. It is intended to be picked up and read as occasion allows, especially at evening, by lawyers and all their fellow nonlawyers.
Reviews
This is beautifully written book, composed of short pensées or insights on an astonishing range of topics from language to music to mathematics, all brought into some revealing and suprising connection with the way lawyers think and listen and talk when they are acting in total good faith. Far more interesting than a non-lawyer could ever have imagined. Lyrical, profound, enlightening.

Shakespeare and Text (Oxford Shakespeare Topics)

Shakespeare and Text (Oxford Shakespeare Topics)
John Jowett | 2007-12-07 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 192 | Drama
Oxford Shakespeare Topics provide students and teachers with short books on important aspects of Shakespeare criticism and scholarship. Each book is written by an authority in its field, and combines accessible style with original discussion of its subject.

Shakespeare and Text is an indispensable and unique guide to its topic. It takes Shakespeare readers to the very foundation of his work, explaining how his plays first took shape in the theatre where writing was part of a larger collective enterprise. As the resulting manuscripts are virtually all lost, the account then turns to the early modern printing industry that produced the earliest surviving texts of Shakespeare's plays. It describes the roles of publisher and printer, the controls exerted through the Stationers' Company, and the technology of printing. A chapter is devoted to the book that gathered Shakespeare's plays together for the first time, the First Folio of 1623. Shakespeare and Text goes on to survey the major developments in textual studies over the past century. It builds on the recent upsurge of interest in textual theory, and deals with issues such as collaboration, the instability of the text, the relationship between theatre culture and print culture, and the book as a material object. Later chapters examine the current critical edition, explaining the procedures that transform early texts in to a very different cultural artefact, the edition in which we regularly encounter Shakespeare.
Reviews
A fantastic introduction to textual studies and issues in Shakespeare Studies. A must-have for anyone wanting to learn about the history of the text.

Reviews
I found this to be a great book at a great price. If you are looking for a comprehensive book on the subject of Supply Chain Logistics, then this is the one for you. Check it out!
Reviews
This book provides a very good overall review of basic Supply Chain functions, the linkage between them and some tactical precepts. The focus is higher level strategy. It helps the reader develop a fuller understanding of the discipline; it is an easy read and is well worth the time. Note that it does not focus heavily on any area; such as, materials management, distribution design, etc. Also, it does not guide you in developing a company strategy.
Reviews
Page 60: "20% of customers buying 20% of the products = 4% of all customer/product transactions"

There are some glaring errors here:

1. The general rule is, 20% of customers give you 80% of your business.

2. Christopher asserts that 20% of customers purchase 20% of your products, then it stands to reason that the other 80% of your customers give you the other 80%.

3. If these 20% of customers give 4% of all customer/product transactions, do the other 80% of your customers give 96%? Obviously not!

There are MORE errors.
Reviews
This book by Martin Christopher, is one of the better if not among the best books on supply chain management. Written by Professor Martin Christopher of the Cranfield School of Management, the book deals particularly with best practices in supply chain management in the current era of globalization. Responsiveness, reliability and relationships are the basis for successful logistics and supply chain management. Strategies like Just-In-Time (JIT), Lean and Agile thinking are reviewed, and last not least, there is a very solid chapter on supply chain risk, which is what interested me in particular. That chapter alone is worth buying the book.

Adaptive Control: Stability, Convergence, and Robustness

Adaptive Control: Stability, Convergence, and Robustness
Shankar Sastry | 1989-01-01 00:00:00 | Prentice Hall | 378 | Control Theory
The objective of this book is to give, in a concise and unified fashion, the major results, techniques of analysis and new directions of research in adaptive systems. Such a treatment is particularly timely, given the rapid advances in microprocessor and multi-processor technology which make it possible to implement the fairly complicated nonlinear and time varying control laws associated with adaptive control. Indeed, limitations to future growth can hardly be expected to be computational, but rather from a lack of a fundamental understanding of the methodologies for the design, evaluation and testing of the algorithms. The objective has been to give a clear, conceptual presentation of adaptive methods, to enable a critical evaluation of these techniques and suggest avenues of further development.

Adaptive control has been the subject of active research for over three decades now (ed note: this book was published in 1994). There have been many theoretical successes, including the development of rigorous proofs of stability and an understanding of the dynamical properties of adaptive schemes. Several successful applications have been reported and the last ten years have seen an impressive growth in the availability of commercial adaptive controllers.

This book presents the deterministic theory of identification and adaptive control. For the most part the focus is on linear, continuous time, single-input single-output systems. The presentation includes the algorithms, their dynamical properties and tools for analysis - including the recently introduced averaging techniques. Current research in the adaptive control of multi-input, multi-output linear systems and a class of nonlinear systems is also covered. Although continuous time algorithms occupy the bulk of our interest, they are presented in such a way as to enable their transcription to the discrete time case.

Fancy Form Design is a practical hands-on, full color book that follows the process of creating visually stunning yet usable web forms, from start to end. The book covers all design elements from planning the form's purpose and interface through to mastering markup, applying style with CSS, and adding interactivity and visual effects with JavaScript. By the end of the you'll will have the code, and wisdom, they need to build fancy forms of their own.

Does Not Meet Expectations
§

Forms make money. People who make effective forms make good money.

The industry needs a lively book to bring together the best practices and lore of making seductive forms. Why do I use the term `seductive?`

If you make form-based Web application interfaces or Web sites for a living then you have encountered this problem: Your task is to collect, say, 10 pieces of information from a user who might rather be doing something else. In order to get these 10 simple bits of data, you may have to get the user to sift through hundreds, possibly thousands, of options. How do you do this without overwhelming the user? How do you flow each user seamlessly through pitfalls they are best left unaware of? How do you do this for complex, multi-screen workflow situations?

Beyond knowledge of markup, styling, graphics editing, programming and usability issues, we in the field also must practice ways to present all this to our co-workers and managers to insure the integrity of the final product.

This book presents the basics in a solid way but it's not going to get you very far with those interesting challenges.

User review
1/3 of what the book should have been
The book is quite short, with large type, and pretty photos of very simple forms. It is about as realistic as Peter Pan. The forms are very very very very simple, so keeping the forms pretty and clean is a snap -- in the book. But what do you do with real-world forms that have lengthy, multi-line questions? Multi-part questions? Questions where part a changes what happens with part b and c?

I like Sitepoint publishers a lot, but I wasted my money on this book. Be advised.

User review
A lot of words
This book has 170 pages of extensive description on the profound philosophy of forms.

Information is very pristine and lacking in depth and most of it is just long pages on `This is the perfect web form`. Ok well,,. where do I go from here? Instead of providing full proof, wholesome description on how to implement the features examples (which are very nice indeed) the writer goes on and on on what's the perfect form. HTML/CSS code snippets begin to show at the penultimate chapter, where JavaScript validation is barely touched in the last chapter.

Overall, this is a very nice book to cover what a form should look like, so I give another star. But as far as implementation goes, type `form design` in Google and you'll get better results, I promise.

Quantification and Modelling of Heterogeneous Systems

Quantification and Modelling of Heterogeneous Systems
Ivan Saxl,Karol Pelikan,Jan Rataj,Michal Besterci | 1995-03-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge International Science Publishi | 117 | Engineering
Construction of machines, systems and structures is accompanied by the continuously increasing demand on their performance, speed of main functions, and extension of life and reliability. The effect of high-frequency cyclic loading caused by oscillations of longitudinal or other waves results in the formation of stress or strain effects on the material. Test systems for conventional fatigue tests usually operate with frequencies of several units, tens or hundreds of cycles per second. It is necessary to determine whether these data can be transferred to testpieces subjected to several tens of thousands of cycles per second, e.g. 20 kHz, and also explain the relationship between the fatigue limit values obtained at low and high loading frequencies from the viewpoint of safety and reliability of components and structures.

Reviews
I bought this when it came out.

Some of the photography is good and in most cases, the background and props/costumes used for the pictures are far more interesting than Madonna and the "sexual" themes she is painstakingly trying so hard to portray.

Cold and calculating or at the very least distant. Nothing erotic happening here, but a must for Madonna fans/collectors.
Reviews
ok i have mixed feelings about this. I was wondering what's the hype about this book, and now I've read it, I still don't quite understand why people are giving too much hype over a bindful of Madonna in erotica poses? It's not even porn. I guess Madonna's point when she thought about this book flew over most of people's head. From what I see, she's telling how women are mostly associated with sex. how they are subjected. There's a topic somewhere and I doubt she was piling this just for people to yell banned for.

Oh, I applaude Madonna for having the guts this book together cause I am sure she expected what came after, the mostly bad response of the public. I guess the title really covers what's the whole book is about. I must say it's a good art form.

Overall, if you're pretty much close-minded and not quite into graphical erotica, I say you should stay away from this book.
Reviews
I bought and read this book, back in 1992. My girlfriend was really surprised and she said that she's been discussing this book with her friends, but nobody actually owned it.

The book is amazing, both outside and inside. Outside, it has a shiny wrapping and a hard alumium cover. I have never seen a book with such a cover.

It had a CD too, with the song "Erotic, erotic, put your hands all over my body".

It describes Madonna's life, from her early sexual experiences, to where she is today. It has pictures of Madonna nude, and it explains some of her views on sex.

She thinks that if you are a guy with lots of money, you can have a pretty girlfriend, even if you are not handsome.

It is a remarkable book and it will impress all of your friends to whom you show it.

So, don't hesitate, buy it. I did.

This is Madonna's 1992 book, and it's filled with provocative and surprising photos. It's in high demand, selling for steep prices all over the internet. It just goes to show that Madonna is still on top of her game as an artist, and she's also a beautiful model, too! Buy now while they last.
Reviews
In 1990, Madonna had, or so we thought, gone to the extreme in her sexual nature by releasing the music video for her 1990 hit single, "Justify My Love". We had all thought that Madonna had gone too far in her sexual escapades, not that I objected to it, because I did not disagree with it. From 1983 to 1990, we had all thought that she had done things that no woman, not even Cher, would even dare do. But man, were we naive or what? Because in 1992, just before the release of her EROTICA album, Madonna released her metal-spiral bound book entitled, SEX. I searched a long time for this book, and my copy, from an ebay buyer, finally arrived. After I looked through this book, I simply said to myself, "[...]" What she did from 1983 to 1990 was nothing compared to what is bound in this book.

This book covers every sexual fantasy that one might have. It goes into detail of how Madonna enjoys looking at her private area, about how Madonna fantiszied about lesbianism, and much more that is too explicit to even mention in this review. I will mention that there are a numerous amount of celebrities that make it into this book, including Tony Ward, Isabella Rossalini, Vanilla Ice, Naomi Campbell, Big Daddy Kane, Udo Kier, and much more. If you are not a Madonna fan, then this book is not for you and it is not for you to post a review on here. If you are a Madonna fan that has children running around the house, then you'll be wise enough to keep this book out of their reach. But if you are a Madonna fan, or as big of a fan as I am, then you'll be wise to purchase this book if you have not done so when it released so many years ago.

Primate Origins (Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects)

Primate Origins (Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects)
Matthew J. Ravosa | 2006-11-14 00:00:00 | Springer | 859 | Social Sciences

The goals of this volume are twofold. First, it aims to provide a novel focus on adaptive explanations for cranial and postcranial features and functional complexes, socioecological systems, life history patterns, etc. in early primates. Second, it aims to offer a detailed rendering of the phylogenetic affinities of such basal taxa to later primate clades as well as to other early/recent mammalian orders. Thus, in addition to the strictly paleontological or systemic questions regarding Primate Origins, the editors plan to concentrate on the adaptive significance of primate characteristics. These questions are best approached through both paleontological and neontological comparative research on a variety of primate and non-primate materials. The volume is timely because it capitalizes on an increasing and important degree of novel independent museum, field and laboratory based research on many of the important outstanding issues regarding primate origins. Furthermore, by intergrating such a disparate sources of experimental, comparative, paleontological, ecological and molecular information into a single edited volume, it provides the broadest possible perspective on early primate phylogeny and the adaptive uniqueness of the Order Primates.

Optimism & Pessimism: Implications for Theory, Research, and Practice

Optimism & Pessimism: Implications for Theory, Research, and Practice
Edward C. Chang | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | American Psychological Association (APA) | 395 | Emotions
Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Focuses on the practical implications for therapy and provides current reviews of the empirical foundations of these constructs. Includes an examination of cultural, biological, and psychological factors on optimism and pessimism. Illustrates the interplay between optimism and pessimism that reflects the tension and harmony in life.
Reviews
This informative book, with chapters by several different psychologists, is a wonderful balancing of the one-sided "positive psychology" movement. One size does not fit all of us !! And this book respects and understands our individual differences. I particularly appreciate the chapter by Julie Norem, Ph.D., which previews her insightful new book, The Positive Power of Negative Thinking, about the psychology of Defensive Pessimism.
Reviews
If you are like me and feel that optimism and pessmism can be both good and bad, you must check out this book! The chapters are interesting, thorough, and cover alot of ground. One or two of the dozen or so chapters can be a bit dense however. Nonetheless, this is by far the most balanced book I've seen written on optimism by some top people like Martin Seligman (who wrote Learned Optimism). It was refreshing to see that the cup can be both half empty and half full at the same time! (The Ying and Yang art cover is absolutely fab if you're into such things.)

I'm a freelance writer based in New York and I write columns for several national publications on diverse topics ranging from education to health.

Chemical Crystallography - An Introduction To Optical And X Ray Methods.

Chemical Crystallography - An Introduction To Optical And X Ray Methods.
C.W. Bunn | 2007-03-15 00:00:00 | Bunn Press | 468 | Science
Text extracted from opening pages of book: CHEMICAL CBYSTALLOGRAPHY AN. INTRODUCTION TO OPTICAL AND X-RAY METHODS BY C. W. BUNN OXFORD AT THE CLARENDON PRESS Oxford University Press, Amen House, London E. G. 4 GLASGOW NEW YORK TORONTO MELBOURNE WELLINGTON BOMBAY CALCUTTA MADRAS CAPETOWN Geoffrey Cumberlege, Publisher to the University FIRST PUBLISHED 1045 REPRINTED WITH CORRECTIONS 1946 Reprinted lithographically in Great Britain at the UNIVERSITY PRESS, OXFORD, 1948, 1949, 1952, from corrected sheets of the second impression PREFACE CEYSTALLOGRAPHIC methods are used in chemistry for two main pur poses the identification of solid substances, and the determination of atomic configurations ; there are also other applications, most of which, as far as technique is concerned, may* be said to lie between the two main subjects. This baok is intended to be a guide to these methods. I have tried to explain the elementary principles involved, and to give as much practical information as will enable the reader to start using the methods described. I have not attempted to give a rigorous treat ment of the physical principles: the f approach is consistently from the chemist's point of view, and physical theory is included only in so far as it is necessary for the general comprehension of the principles and methods described. Nor have I attempted to give an exhaustive account of any subject ; the aim throughout has been to lay the founda tions, and to give sufficient references ( either to larger works or to original papers) to enable the reader to follow up any subject in greater detail if he so desires. The treatment of certain subjects is perhaps somewhat unorthodox. Crystal morphology, for instance, is described in terms of the concept of the unit cell ( rather than in terms of the axial ratios of the earlier morphologists), and is approached by way of the phenomena of crystal growth. The optical properties of crystals are described solely in terms of the phenomena observed in the polarizing microscope. X-ray diffrac tion is considered first in connexion with powder photographs; it is moj* e usual to start with the interpretation of the diffraction effects of single crystals. These methods of treatment are dictated by the form and scope of the book ; they also reflect the course of the writer's own experience in applying crystallographic methods to chemical problems. It is therefore hoped that they may at any rate seem natural to those to whom the book is addressed - students of chemistry who wish to acquire some knowledge of crystallographic methods, and research workers who wish to make practical use of such methods. If the book should come to the notice of a more philosophical reader, I can only hope that any qualms such a reader may feel about its avoidance of formal physical or mathematical treatment may be somewhat offset by the interest of a novel, if rather severely practical, viewpoint. The difficulties of three-dimensional thinking have, I hope, been lightened as much as possible by the provision of a large number of vi PREFACE diagrams ; but crystallography is emphatically not a subject which can be learnt solely from books: solid models should be used freely models of crystal shapes, of atomic . nd molecular configurations, of reciprocal lattices and of vectorial representations of optical and other physical properties. Most of the diagrams are original, but a few have been reproduced, by permission, from published books and journals: Figs. 197, 207-9, 215, and 222 from the Journal of the Chemical Society ; Figs. 199, 203, and 217 from the Proceedings of the Royal Society, Figs. 102-4 from the Journal of Scientific Instruments ; Fig. 229 from the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Fig. 161 from Inter nationale Tabetten ftir Bestimmung von Kristallstrukturen ( Berlin: Born traeger); Fig. 192 from the * Strnkturbericht ' of the Zeitschrift fttr Kristallographie\ and Figs. 212 and 216 from Bragg's The Crystalline State

Following the learning objectives of the Apple Certified System Administrator course, this book is a perfect study aid for the Apple Certified System Administrator exam.

User review
Read the book and passed the exam
I purchased this book to study for the 9L0-621 exam. I studied for about 2 weeks. I have roughly 4 years of experience administering OS X servers. I passed the exam today with a very comfortable score and earned my ACSA! I would recommend this book, although real life experience is also a must.

User review
What's missing from Server Essentials
First, the book is only 363 pages long, not 560 as identified in the Amazon description. So in my opinion a little over priced for the content.

Having said that, I found the book contained a lot of information that I wish had been in Server Essentials. Of course, considering that these are geared towards the Apple exams I suppose you have to give them some leeway.

As I am in the process of planning an OS 10.5 Server upgrade, this book has been helpful. I'm still hoping that someone will write more about Print Queue Management in OS 10.5. If you're looking for more info on that subject, you won't find it in here nor in Server Essentials.

Overall, if you're new to supporting OS 10.5 Server or migrating from 10.4 to 10.5, then this book has some helpful information - but maybe you can get lucky and find it at a discounted price. I don't feel it's really worth $65 but I'd consider $35 a fair deal.

South Korea in the Fast Lane: Economic Development and Capital Formation

South Korea in the Fast Lane: Economic Development and Capital Formation
Young-Iob Chung | 2007-07-20 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 480 | Economics
After having been a Japanese colony for more than 35 years until 1945, the miraculous economic development in the southern half of the Korean peninsula has multiplied the nation's output nearly 38 times and expanded per capita income by 16 times from $778 to $12,422 (in year 2000 prices) and transformed from basically an agrarian economy to that of a major industrial power, which is now considered one of a dozen or so of most industrialized countries in the world, during the 43-year period between 1953 and 1996. This book is a study of development of the South Korean economy from the time of the cessation of the Korean War to date, based on available data with minimal historical description, focusing on investment, the sources and means of capital formation, which is one of the most critical factors that contributed to economic development, and the government role of in them for economic growth and structural changes. The approach in this study is more analytical (without being mathematical, statistical, or technical, but with supporting quantitative data) than historical.

There are a number of studies on some aspects of capital formation and economic development in short articles, but there is no comprehensive study/analysis/book of capital formation and economic development of South Korea since the Korean War, other than this authors comprehensive study of capital formation and economic transformation of Korea before 1945 (1876-1945). Not only this book fills the void of study of the subject after the Korean War but it also complement my first volume.

This study reveals a number of significant, though perhaps not all unique, patterns and characteristics of capital formation and economic development of South Korea. The combination of circumstances, approaches, and experiences in the country was in many respects unique in comparison to many developing and developed countries, including many Asian countries, such as Japan and China.

Creating Breakthrough Products: Innovation from Product Planning to Program Approval

Creating Breakthrough Products: Innovation from Product Planning to Program Approval
Jonathan Cagan,Craig M. Vogel | 2001-11-01 00:00:00 | FT Press | 336 | Advertising
Transforms innovation from serendipity to science, giving you the tools for creating products that change the rules of the game and achieve significant competitive advantage.
Reviews
The textbook arrived in the condition that was stated and it also arrived in a timely manner.
Reviews
This was a very boring book. I was looking to be motivated into creating new products, but this was like reading a history book without addressing how to think outside the box.
Reviews
The seller was very prompt on his sending and delivery was on time. Most impressive the book was in very good condition for a used book. Congratulation my friend I like doing business with you.
Reviews
Great book, worth owning if you are a product designer or project manager. Excellent charts and graphs to support the ideas of the book.
Reviews
Although I agree with several of the concerns by other reviewers, I recommend this book for product developers because it offers usable information that can improve the liklihood of success for a new product.

First my concerns:

- There's too many unrelated topics,
- There's too many acronyms,
- It reads like a textbook, it's a little hard to read as it feels disjointed somewhat.

Now the things that I like and recommend:

- Great reviews of successful product case studies (I particularly liked the OXO product one),
- Although trite, their 2x2 matrix was quite interesting,
- Their emphasis on how to put "style" into your product (this is not really covered in many other books),
- Their concept of Product Opportunity Gaps (POG, whoops there's another acronym).

I think the authors, who are quite astute, should rewrite this book. I recommend that they boil down the material and rewrite the book thinking of it as an instruction book from them to some MBA/Engineer (Hewlitt/Packard) who's working out of his garage on some new product. They should not see this as a college text, or some book that's a supplementary reading for college. They have great material and great ideas, but it needs focused. They can completely drop Chapter 6 on Teams. Their Chapter 7 on Understanding User Needs seemed weak. They should drop the case studies in Chapters 8 and 9 and integrate that great material into the core text -- otherwise it's just too repetitive.

There was an excellent article about the authors in Fast Company magazine, July 2002. page 123. "How to Design the Perfect Product". I recommend reading that article as well.

These smart guys from Carnegie Mellon's design school have a unique approach to "Value is all about fulfilling fantasy" and their methodology for getting that into your product.

Pro Dynamic .NET 4.0 Applications: Data-Driven Programming for the .NET Framework

Pro Dynamic .NET 4.0 Applications: Data-Driven Programming for the .NET Framework
| 2010-02-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | .NET

As a developer you are likely painfully aware that not all features of an application can be anticipated when the software ships. In order to cope with these eventualities and save yourself time (and perhaps money), it makes sense to write your applications in such a way that end users can be made as independent of the developers as possible. Giving your users the power to make changes to the way the application operates once it has shipped gives them more control over the way the application works, while reducing the frequency with which you need to redistribute application files, creating a win-win situation.

This book explains how to give users the power to create additional data-entry fields, validation logic, and new reports without assistance from the application developer. You will learn how to do this for both desktop (C# and WPF) and web (ASP) applications.

What you'll learn How to allow the user to create validation logic at runtime How to define and instantiate controls at runtime and the pitfalls of doing so How to create data-driven reports using Excel, Crystal Reports, and SQL Server Reporting Services How to design a database structure for optimizing data-driven applications How to build a user interface that allows users to modify their application visually Who is this book for?

This book is for anyone wanting to distribute an application in which the user needs to be as independent of the developer as possible. By using the techniques described in the book, the user will have the power to make modifications to his own applications, and the developer will reduce the frequency with which he needs to redistribute EXEs.

Resisting Ethics

Resisting Ethics
Scott Schaffer | 2004-09-04 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 336 | Philosophy
Resisting Ethics is a new contribution to an ongoing debate on how the world can be improved. Starting with the notion that resistance and ethics are theoretically and practically intertwined, Scott Schaffer develops a new socially oriented ethics based on the practical experience of resistance and ethics. Borrowing from and extending the ideas of Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Bourdieu, and using case studies of the Algerian Revolution and the Zapatista rebellion, Schaffer argues that existentialism can give us new insights into how we can and should act ethically in the world. Resisting Ethics is a wide-ranging work and represents a new kind of intervention into issues of social justice and resistance.

Reviews
Okay, I'll admit that I know the author personally (he was a professor of mine and is currently a good friend) but all bias aside, this book is a great look at revolutionary movements and the sociological motivations behind them. Schaffer's ability to take existential philosophy and apply it to a practical, social setting will keep the deepest of theoretical readers engrossed from start to finish. Not only does he manage to make relevant the philosophical social theory of days gone by, but he applies it to current issues in global revolutionary politics. Schaffer's discourse on the ethics of resistance will challenge the reader to think hard about what revolution means in this "post-modern" world. A must read for anyone interested in the topic.

The Multifaceted Skyrmion

The Multifaceted Skyrmion
Gerald E. Brown | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 460 | Physics
This is a sequel to the World Scientific volume edited by Gerald E Brown in 1994 entitled "Selected Papers", with Commentary, of 'Tony Hilton Royle Skyrme'. There has been a series of impressive developments in the application of the skyrmion structure to wide-ranging physical phenomena. The first volume was mainly focused on the rediscovery of the skyrmion in 1983 in the context of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and on its striking role in nuclear physics. Since 1994, skyrmions have been found to play an even greater role not only in various aspects of particle physics and astrophysics but also most remarkably in condensed matter physics. It is also proving to be fruitful in dense hadronic matter relevant to compact stars, a system difficult to access by other approaches. The recent discovery of holographic baryons in gravity/gauge duality which correspond to skyrmions in the infinite tower of vector mesons provides a valuable confrontation of string theory with nature, particularly in the regime of strong coupling that QCD proper has difficulty in accessing. This volume consists of contributions from the active researchers who have made important progress in these three areas of theoretical physics - condensed matter physics, nuclear and particle physics, and string theory.

Raising a Ladder to the Moon: The Complexities of Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility

Raising a Ladder to the Moon: The Complexities of Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility
Malcolm McIntosh | 2003-09-06 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 160 | Ethics
'Raising a ladder to the moon' is a metaphor that was used to describe the immensity of the task of laying the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable at the end of the nineteenth century. It is used in this book to illuminate the challenges and opportunities that are inherent in the development of corporations as socially and environmentally responsible 'citizens' at the beginning of the twenty-first century. With reference to companies such as Macdonald's, Deutsche Bank, Coca-Cola, Royal Dutch / Shell, BP, Wal-Mart, and Unilever, Raising a Ladder to the Moon argues that in order to re-engage with the world, and solve some of the problems created by globalisation, we must re-see it. We must now see it in the light of its complexities. We have succeeded in creating social systems that create and destroy, that bind us together in common purpose and that set us against each other. Our corporations stand as monuments to our success at building social structures, but they are neither people nor machines. They are alive. They are complex, adaptive systems that can take on a life of their own. We need to embrace that complexity.

Boundary Layer Theory

Boundary Layer Theory
Hermann Schlichting | 1979-04-01 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math | 817 | Engineering
This text is the translation and revision of Schlichting's classic text in boundary layer theory. The main areas covered are laws of motion for a viscous fluid, laminar boundary layers, transition and turbulence, and turbulent boundary layers.
Reviews
Good value - well worth the money. I also like the updated sections available in the Springer edition.
Reviews
Although I have only the first edition, I still find it to be of immense value, and hands-down superior to any other book on the subject (save the newer edition perhaps). It seamlessly weaves together theory, mathematics, and experimental observation, into a very readable and (surprisingly) interesting text. Because it explains the fundamentals so well, Schlichting's book is one of those rare engineering classics that will continue to be of value for a very long time to come.
Reviews
This is the classic book on the subject to be ever written and retains its class by incorporating some of the recent developments in the boundary layer theory.

A great collection for anyone in the field of turbulence, aerodynamics ...
Reviews
this is a classic book. however, the new 8th edition is not translated very well. i have an older english version (6th edition, 1968) that is translated much better. even where the content is the same between the two editions, the "updated" translation is worse that in the original version.
Reviews
This is the best and the most classical fluid mechanics book that i have read. Read it through carefully and you will get much from it. Reading it from time to time can give you many new knowledge every time.

Combat Aircraft 062, US Navy PBY Catalina Units of the Pacific War

Combat Aircraft 062, US Navy PBY Catalina Units of the Pacific War
Louis B. Dorny, Jim Laurier | 2007-10-23 00:00:00 | Osprey Publishing | 96 | History
Osprey Publishing Description:
Deadly in its primary role as a submarine hunter, the PBY Catalina was the scourge of the Imperial Japanese Navy's submarine force. Its amphibious traits also made the aircraft well suited to air-sea rescue, and thousands of Allied airmen were saved from a watery grave by PBY crews. Using personal interviews, war diaries and combat reports combined with original Japanese records and books, Louis B Dorny provides a view on the role of the Catalina from both side of the war. Illustrated with over 80 photographs and colour profiles detailing aircraft markings, this is the definitive history of an insight into the PBY's use by the US Navy and Allied forces in the Pacific during World War 2.

Reviews:

"Besides providing a history of the development of seagoing aircraft, the author describes many of the combat actions in which the PBYs were involve, and the wealth of photos and color illustrations depict the unit markings and other features in fine detail." - WWII History Magazine (August/September 2008)

"Among the most popular Osprey Publishing titles are those in the Combat Aircraft series. Louis B Dorny's book in this series focuses on the role of the PBY Catalina maritime patrol aircraft in the Pacific War. The result is an excellent overall account of this aircraft's career and operations during the Pacific War... This is a perfect example of an Osprey title filling a nice that would probably otherwise be overlooked." - Mark E. Stille, WWII Quarterly (Winter 2008)

"Louis B Dorny's US Navy PBY Catalina Units of the Pacific War is the second of two volumes...: each volume packs in vintage black and white photos, history and close-up shots of the plans and each comes packed with statistics and history." - The Bookwatch (December 2007)

"The author has divided the book into the various stages of the war, with a considerable emphasis on the first year of the conflict, when hard pressed PBY units were at their most active... It makes for an excellent addition to the series and I know you will find it to be as interesting a read as I." - Scott Van Aken, modelingmadness.com (December 2007)

Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads (Aerospace Series (PEP))

Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads (Aerospace Series (PEP))
Jan Robert Wright,Jonathan Edward Cooper | 2008-01-28 00:00:00 | Wiley | 488 | Engineering
Aeroelastic phenomena arising from the interaction of aerodynamic, elastic and inertia forces, and the loads resulting from flight / ground manoeuvres and gust / turbulence encounters, have a significant influence upon aircraft design. The prediction of aircraft aeroelastic stability, response and loads requires application of a range of interrelated engineering disciplines.

This new textbook introduces the foundations of aeroelasticity and loads for the flexible aircraft, providing an understanding of the main concepts involved and relating them to aircraft behaviour and industrial practice.

Features

  • Use of simplified mathematical models to demonstrate key aeroelastic and loads phenomena including flutter, divergence, control effectiveness and the response and loads resulting from flight / ground manoeuvres and gust / turbulence encounters
  • Introduction to some up-to-date methodologies for aeroelastics and loads modelling
  • Emphasis on the strong link between aeroelasticity and loads
  • Provision of MATLAB and SIMULINK programs for the simplified analyses
  • Overview of typical industrial practice in meeting certification requirements

Reviews
Aeroelasticity is a tough subject to start off. However, this book will pave your way quite substantially. Once you have gone through your first Flight Dynamics course (and by this time you most likely have taken the Vibration course too), you are ready to read this book. Totally self contained, the book is a smooth transition from rigid body representation of the aircraft to the elastic one. It covers not only the static and dynamic flutter, but also responses to gusts, atmospheric turbulence, landing, and rolling on ground.

Imagine your linear flight dynamic model taking into account the elastic degree of freedom along with unsteady aerodynamics. This is a very realistic and natural extension from the rigid body model but somehow I have hardly seen Flight Dynamics text books doing that, except Bernard Etkin's book very briefly touching on the topic. The current book fills this gap well at a level accessible to third or fourth year undergraduate student in Aerospace Engineering.

Accidentally Were?

Accidentally Were?
Anne Douglas | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Loose Id | 68 | Romance Novels
I came across this book purely by accident. After reading the sample I decided to give it a try. I must say that enjoyed this book more than I originally anticipated. It kind of reminded me of the books by Shelly Laurenston. Anne Douglas adds humor in telling her story between Pearl and Rex. I've been searching for a book like this and was not disappointed. I will happily buy the second book in this series "Witch Vamp Were" but apparently Amazon is not selling it at this time (BOOO TO YOU AMAZON!). I recommend you go to Ms. Douglas's website and read the sample of the second installment... maybe together we can convince the powers that be to add the book to Amazon. All in all, I recommend this book. It is a fun and enjoyable read.

Clinical MR Imaging: A Practical Approach

Clinical MR Imaging: A Practical Approach
Peter Reimer, Paul M. Parizel, James F.M. Meaney | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 850 | Medicine
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the leading cross-sectional imaging method in clinical practice. Continuous technical improvements have significantly broadened the scope of applications. At present, MR imaging is not only the most important diagnostic technique in neuroradiology and musculoskeletal radiology, but has also become an invaluable diagnostic tool for abdominal, pelvic, cardiac, breast and vascular imaging. This book offers practical guidelines for performing efficient and cost-effective MRI examinations in daily practice. The underlying idea is that, by adopting a practical protocol-based approach, the work-flow in a MRI unit can be streamlined and optimized.
