Neandertals and Modern Humans in Western Asia

Neandertals and Modern Humans in Western Asia
Takeru Akazawa,Kenichi Aoki,Ofer Bar-Yosef | 1998-09-30 00:00:00 | Springer | 556 | Social Sciences
In this fascinating volume, the Middle Paleolithic archaeology of the Middle East is brought to the current debate on the origins of modern humans. These collected papers gather the most up-to-date archaeological discoveries of Western Asia - a region that is often overshadowed by African or European findings - but the only region in the world where both Neandertal and early modern human fossils have been found. The collection includes reports on such well known cave sites as Kebara, Hayonim, and Qafzeh, among others. The information and interpretations available here are a must for any serious researcher or student of anthropology or human evolution.

An Archaeology of Images: Iconology and Cosmology in Iron Age and Roman Europe

An Archaeology of Images: Iconology and Cosmology in Iron Age and Roman Europe
Miranda Aldhouse Green | 2004-06-09 00:00:00 | Routledge | 304 | Social Sciences
This new book rejects conventional interpretations to produce an exciting new vision of the meaning of Celtic art.
Reviews
This is a beautiful volume that is well illustrated. However the topic of how iron age people (especially the Celts) used artwork is no revelation to those of us who have kept current in modern Celt studies. That art objects for the Celts had multiple uses and lived multiple lives (the main thesis to this text) is nothing particularly new. Some of us are in touch with archeologists of active Celtic sites and when archeologists discover almost all of the bronze votive horses found have one broken leg and it is broken in a similar way you get the idea that this was a manipulation done with a purpose.

Many people who study the ancient Celts may find much in this book redundant. All the same a good book.

Simians, Cyborgs and Women: The Reinvention of Nature

Simians, Cyborgs and Women: The Reinvention of Nature
Donna J. Haraway | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Free Association Books | 288 | Social Sciences
Donna Haraway analyses accounts, narratives, and stories of the creation of nature, living organisms, and cyborgs (cybernetic components); showing how deeply cultural assumptions penetrate into allegedly value-neutral medical research.
Reviews
Donna Haraway's work in this collection continues to amaze me. Her intense critical engagement with the history of science is resolutely brilliant: she takes common conceptions of the body, objectivity, power, and 'nature' and pulls the rug of patriarchal metaphysics out from under them. These essays are concerned with unravelling origins myths, pointing out the pitfalls of political innocence, deconstructing our conceptions of the natural and the artefactual--you know, the usual. Her project is immense, but the she hones her points in each essay very well with dazzlingly astute political analyses and characteristic poetic phrases. If you're interested in oppositional antiracist feminist consciousness, Haraway's yr philosopher.
Reviews
"Simians, Cyborgs, and Women" sounds as if it might be interesting to discuss the connections between the three conceps upon first glance. Feel free to read the opening portions of the book. They are representative of the majority of the book. If you are well-versed in fanatical feminist theories - and, more importantly, agree wholeheartedly with them - then you will enjoy the book immensely. On the other hand, if you are expecting a healthy discussion of the basis of, rationale for, and definitions of feminist theories, look elsewhere. The book is rife with shakey feminist theories which serve as premises to even still more outrageous conclusions, without any attempt to justify the premises themselves. As a result, it ends up a house of cards, without a strong foundation, puffed up far more than it ever should. I would have been more interested in seeing a well-structured analysis of the views underlying the arguments she makes. Alas, a search for such an analysis was in vain.

Simians, Cyborgs, and Women written by Donna J. Haraway is a compilation of ten essays from 1978 through 1989 that focus on the idea that nature is constructed, not discovered, and truth is made, not found. Donna J. Haraway is a science historian and Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She explains her ideas in this book through a strong feminist viewpoint.
Haraway divides her book into three sections, each section addressing different topics. The first section of the book discusses feminist struggles of developing knowledge and behavior in the social lives of monkeys and apes. The second part of the book discusses contests for the power to determine stories about nature and experience. The last part of the book discusses the cyborg embodiment and the fate of feminist concepts of gender, feminist ethics and even discusses the immune system as a biopolitical map of the chief system of difference in a postmodern world.
My opinions on this book are very one sided. I did not enjoy reading it at all. I thought that the book was very difficult to read. The book had a great deal of words in it that I have never seen before. I found myself constantly looking to a dictionary just so I could get the message behind what Haraway was trying to relay. One of the other reasons that the book was difficult to read was because it talked about many theories and ideas that I have never heard about before. This would have not been a big issue if the theories had explained more before they were used in proving Haraway's arguments. A direct example of this is when Haraway uses the theories that Zuckerman and Rowell have about reproduction. There was one part of the book that I thought was fairly interesting and that was Haraway's idea, that people in today's modern world are cyborgs because we incorporate so much technology into our lives. I thought that that idea was a very clever way to describe our highly technical world. I went into reading this book with an open mind and I left the book with an open mind. Even though I did not enjoy reading this book and I thought it was very boring after reading it I am now more aware about how different people think and their point of view and that is always a valuable thing to take away from an experience.

Simians, Cyborgs, and Women The Reinvention of Nature

How did nature come about? Did it happen over night or was it a process that happened gradually over time? Donna Haraway, in a complex manner, addresses this issue in her book with a feminist perspective as she analyzes historical narratives, accounts, and stories about the creation of nature. She looks at several theories of famous theorists including Darwin's evolutionary theory, social constructionism, and Freud's body politic in order to justify her argument throughout the book.
Haraway believes and argues with insightful information that everything that exists is a form of construction in which one thing leads to the development of another and so on. She specifically targets women throughout her book when supporting her argument. For example,
"Teaching in women's studies classrooms is a historically specific activity. Such
teaching inherits, constructs, and transmits particular reading and writing practices that are politically complex. These material practices are part of the apparatus for producing what will count as `experience' on personal and collective levels in women's movement. It is crucial to be accountable for the politics of experience in the institution of women's studies. ......Women do not find `experience' ready to hand any more than they/we find `nature' or the `body' performed, always innocent and waiting outside the violations of language and culture" (Haraway, 109).

This particular situation is not an obvious feature when it comes to looking at the method of women's movement. It is the experience that women obtain which enables them to move forward in women's movement. It is constructed from one thing to the next, in which many different aspects such as experience are part of a process. It is humans that have constructed scientific evidence and then analyzed it and tested it over and over again. Haraway implicitly stresses that humans make what exists, things do not all of the sudden appear in front of us. She also talks about human bodies and how we make them, they do not pre-exist as many people believe. They are made through the process of intercourse between a man and a woman where a human organism inside a female comes to existence.
Haraway's book is ten complicated chapters full of many technical aspects about the evolution of nature through creation. While it is quite insightful, a lot of unfamiliar and technical language is used that can make the reading very frustrating. Identifying the specific argument Haraway is trying to make is not easy when digesting an incredible amount of complex information. It is a difficult book that addresses and investigates many theories critical to her argument that nature was constructed over time. If you have a lot of time on your hands, are interested in the development of nature, and are aroused by the enjoyment of intellectual challenges, I recommend this book.

Primate Origins (Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects)

Primate Origins (Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects)
Matthew J. Ravosa | 2006-11-14 00:00:00 | Springer | 859 | Social Sciences

The goals of this volume are twofold. First, it aims to provide a novel focus on adaptive explanations for cranial and postcranial features and functional complexes, socioecological systems, life history patterns, etc. in early primates. Second, it aims to offer a detailed rendering of the phylogenetic affinities of such basal taxa to later primate clades as well as to other early/recent mammalian orders. Thus, in addition to the strictly paleontological or systemic questions regarding Primate Origins, the editors plan to concentrate on the adaptive significance of primate characteristics. These questions are best approached through both paleontological and neontological comparative research on a variety of primate and non-primate materials. The volume is timely because it capitalizes on an increasing and important degree of novel independent museum, field and laboratory based research on many of the important outstanding issues regarding primate origins. Furthermore, by intergrating such a disparate sources of experimental, comparative, paleontological, ecological and molecular information into a single edited volume, it provides the broadest possible perspective on early primate phylogeny and the adaptive uniqueness of the Order Primates.

Relative Distribution Methods in the Social Sciences (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences)

Relative Distribution Methods in the Social Sciences (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences)
Mark S. Handcock,Martina Morris | 1999-08-05 00:00:00 | Springer | 284 | Social Sciences
In social science research, differences among groups or changes over time are a common focus of study. While means and variances are typically the basis for statistical methods used in this research, the underlying social theory often implies properties of distributions that are not well captured by these summary measures. Examples include the current controversies over growing inequality in earnings, racial differences in test scores, socio-economic correlates of birth outcomes, and the impact of smoking on survival and health. The distributional differences that animate the debates in these fields are complex. They comprise the usual mean-shifts and changes in variance, but also more detailed comparisons of changes in the upper and lower tails of the distributions. Survey and census data contain a wealth of this distributional information, but the traditional methods of analysis leave most of it untapped.

This monograph presents a general framework for comparative distributional analysis. The methods are based on the relative distribution, a simple intuitive transformation that is also a complete nonparametric summary of the information required for scale-invariant distributional comparison. The relative distribution provides a graphical display that simplifies exploratory data analysis, a statistically valid basis for the development of hypothesis-driven summary measures, and location, shape, and covariate decompositions that identify the sources of distributional changes within and between groups.

The monograph is written for data analysts, methodologists, and those interested in measurement. It can serve as a supplementary text for a course on distributional methods or as a stand-alone text for an advanced methods course. The presentation alternates chapters on theory and methodological development with chapters providing an in-depth practical application.

The Spirit of Russian Science

The Spirit of Russian Science
Michael Levinshtein | 2002-09-15 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 112 | Social Sciences
The Spirit of Russian Science comprises dozens of short and funny true stories about the relations between people working in science, the ways people of science interacted, and their attitudes towards life. On the one hand, these stories are very Russian. On the other hand, the spirit of science displayed is very international. One cannot help feeling it, and it is something that is very difficult to define. This book shows the way this spirit manifests itself, providing amusing examples.
Reviews
The author of the book writes in his introduction that "The Sprit of Russian Science"
charms him by the of certain atmosphere, the style of relationships between the people.
After reading "The Sprit of Russian Science", like any other good prose, there comes a need of a dialogue with an author. You need to pinpoint all the features of intangible spirit that was so well portrayed in the book. You unavoidably see the author as a human being with great deal of will power, enormous ability to survive and rather significant influence on people.
"The Spirit..." is ironic and wise, cynical and sentimental, rather optimistic and at the same time soaked in all the troubles of modern reality. And after all, it's not that important whom the turns pout to resemble: Baron Munchauzen, Tile Ulenshpigel, brave soldier Shveyka or Jvanetsky's lyric hero? "The Spirit..." isn't "teachy" or "preachy", he doesn't require adoration, and that is why so many a time my hand seeks the book, and doesn't get tired of discovering and rediscovering it.
I think that the power and the charm of "The Spirit..." are only in its appearance, but in its inside all-sufficient that is so powerful that it energizes anybody who touches it one way or the other.
Being employed as an instructor of Russian Linguistics in Technical University (Taganrog Radiotechnical State University), I always appreciated the charming atmosphere of professionalism and genuine humor that our instructors-physicists created. Most of them in their forties or fifties, they have attended Moscow, Rostov and other state academic institutions all over the Russia, their souls have obviously drunk that fairy tale liquor that has "The Spirit...".
It's seems as if "The Spirit..." isn't alone in this world. He has blood siblings that are scattered on numerous islands of professionalism, quality work and culture that still manage to exist in Russia. And although author's end isn't quite a happy one: "We are writing applications, receiving grants, working abroad. But the doors are closing slowly but steadily. Equipment is aging, the fittest are leaving, and those who are left are getting weaker...But the doors are closing. " I want to believe that everything is not as bad as it seems.
I draw resources for hope from my personal experiences. Russian workaholics of today, living in America, miss Russia. They still keep in touch with their Russian friends, family and colleagues. And last but not least, this "The Spirit..." identified by the author, goes on living here, on the foreign soil.
Here, like in Saint Petersburg, Moscow or tiny Taganrog, small groups of people are formed that are capable to appreciate high quality work, that are capable of not being afraid of work, and of keeping sense of humor in any circumstances.
New life will demand continuation of this book, but I want to thank the author for what's already written. I realize what kind of work you have endured by gathering accidental jokes scattered in the stream of every day's reality.
The author succeeded in saving in his writing the style, the language and genuine charm of real life.
Of course the elements of Russian "get-together" and masculine folklore add certain spice to the overall dish of the book, but most of all I appreciate something else about it. Having read the book in quite unfavorable for myself circumstances, I realized: life isn't over yet, and our sadness has to be light, no matter what. It seems like this book is able to settle optimism and love of life in any mind and do it in a very easy and elegant manner.
Today "The Spirit..." lives like we all do, through difficult and surprising times.
And one more thing. When my sixteen-years-old daughter, who according to unwritten laws of her age, neglected the ideals of her parents, read the book with the same pleasure as myself, I have secretly celebrated. But when she wrote a version of review of "The Spirit...", I was puzzled. The review was sincerely encomium, only it was written in English... Having lived in America for two years, my daughter didn't loose the ability to be influenced by unknown to her "The Sprit of Russian Science", but it became easier for her to express her emotions in English and in typical American manner.

I sighed deeply and thought: "But maybe this is good?" "The Sprit of Russian Science" is alive and respected by us, and our children are able to comprehend it. So let it take its second breath, and let life bring into this new process its own sudden corrections.
"We are born to make fairy tale reality."

Reviews
I finished the "The Spirit of Russian Science" by Prof. M.E.Levinshtein in one day.

I was sick, had a bit of a fever and could not do much. So I got "The Spirit" to get some distraction. And distraction I got! I started to smile from the very first page and constantly called my husband to come to my room so I could read out loud to him and laugh with him again. I could not stop either reading or smiling and often laughing until the very end of the book.

It is a great book about people who create, practice and breathe Science every day of their lives. It is also about how they live, work and manage to have a lot of fun regardless of poor living conditions.

Lots of my friends have borrowed "The Spirit", I actually had a waiting list at one point, and the comments were always most favorable with a request to keep it another day or two for a husband/wife to finish.

I am delighted "The Spirit" is published in English and am getting several copies for my friends. The publication of this book in English has solved, at least for a while, a problem with Christmas/New Year, end of school year and birthday presents.

Enjoy the book,

Lara Yendler
Reviews
My name is Irina Semenova, I'm a scientific fellow at the Ioffe Physical Technical Institute in St.Petersburg, Russia.

Recently I had a great pleasure reading a book "The Spirit of Russian Science" by Michael Levinshtein. To my mind it is one of the best books of this kind.
The author has a good sense of humor and ability to notice such small but very important things as glances, comments, gestures etc. which bring all the spices to human relations and communications.
Unfortunately nowadays people are so busy with an enormous amount of urgent everyday things that the ones who have a potential ability to write something similar don't have time to do or even think about doing that. Although such a book gives a chance to stop in the everyday race for a little while and think
what is really important in life and what is not.

I am absolutely sure the book will be very successful and gone very quickly.

Evangelical Feminism: A New Path to Liberalism?

Evangelical Feminism: A New Path to Liberalism?
Wayne Grudem | 2006-09-13 00:00:00 | Crossway Books | 272 | Social Sciences

By critically examining the writings of egalitarians, Grudem shows that, while egalitarian leaders claim to be subject to Scripture in their thinking, what is increasingly evident in their actual scholarship and practice is an effective rejection of the authority of Scripture.

Egalitarianism is heading toward an Adam who is neither male nor female, a Jesus whose manhood is not important, and a God who is both Father and Mother, and then maybe only Mother. The common denominator in all of this is a persistent undermining of the authority of Scripture in our lives. Grudem's conclusion is that we must choose either evangelical feminism or biblical truth. We can't have it both ways!

Reviews
In the world of Christendom there is a heresy that has become more popular. Some churches are allowing woman to be pastors and allowing them to practice authority over men. This is completely against scripture as Paul says in 1 Timothy 2. This book is one that is helping me better understand the truth of the scripture and shows me the error of those who do confirm woman in the ministry. I would recommend that every Christian read this book it will be sanctifying for you.
Reviews
Wayne Grudem's Evangelical Feminism is a wake-up call to the evangelical world. Packed with hard-hitting evidence that documents the trajectory from egalitarianism to liberalism and eventually to the normalization of homosexuality, Grudem systematically demolishes the reasoning behind many egalitarian readings of Scripture.

I appreciated Grudem's constant reminders throughout the book that not all egalitarians are by default liberals. He clearly counts many egalitarians as friends and colleagues. But all liberals are egalitarians. And furthermore, as Grudem relentlessly points out time and time again, the treatment of Scripture by many evangelical egalitarians is the same reasoning which eventually nullifies Scriptural teaching on a whole host of issues.

Grudem's extensive research and his long defense of complementarianism make him the perfect person to author this work. Unfortunately, because many in the egalitarian camp have read other works by Grudem, it is likely that many will dismiss this book as another rehashing of previous arguments by Grudem.

However, Evangelical Feminism is different than Grudem's other works, because here, Grudem is not offering evidence for complementarianism. Instead, he is focusing on the nature of the arguments in favor of egalitarianism, and showing through historical and theological research what happens when the same ways of thinking are applied to other issues. Liberalism always follows!

This is a very important book. Egalitarians can disagree with Grudem's conclusions, but they cannot dismiss the evidence outlined in his book. The burden of proof now rests squarely on the shoulders of those who wish to remain egalitarian and evangelical.
Reviews
Wayne Grudem has produced a timely wake up call to evangelical believers. With grace, but relentless logic, he shows the slip-shod arguments that evangelicals are using to overturn the clear teachings of Scripture in regard to male leadership in the church. I write as one who studied at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in the the mid-80s. I had selected Gordon-Conwell partly because I was very open to egalitarian views. However the weakness of the egalitarian view became clear as I listened to brilliant men, notably Roger Nicole, break basic hermeneutical principles in order to support their chosen view. The Bible simply does not support the egalitarian position. Since returning to my homeland, Australia, and now having ministered for more than a decade in New Zealand, I have seen the slide Dr. Grudem is warning about taking place. New Zealand Christianity was devastated by liberalism in the first half of last century and then again by the charismatic movement in the second half of the century. In that part of the Christian church which remains evangelical feminism is a major force leading believers away from trust in God's Word. There are only small groups of reformed and some fundamentalist believers who continue to teach what is recognizably the gospel of Jesus Christ. Most evangelicals are being entertained to death by leaders, male and female, who have little regard for what Scripture teaches. Dr Grudem writes on the basis of very thorough research and his conclusions are irrefutable.

My prayer is that his writings will be read, taken to heart and that repentance will result in a return to diligent, expository preaching of the whole counsel of God. For countries like New Zealand the hour is very late. Please pray for this needy nation.
Reviews
This book is essential in arming Christians against the march of feminism on the church. Wayne Grudem argues brilliantly from the Bible against the unscriptural view of egalitarianism. Step by step grudem address popular arguements in favor of egalitarianism and then refutes them establishing the Biblical view of complementarianism in the process. This book will help Christians understand what it means to celebrate our gender differences and recognize the different roles God has established for men and women in the home and in the church.
Reviews
The focus of this book by Wayne Grudem is his concern that evangelical feminism will prove, over time, to draw people into theological liberalism. By liberalism, Grudem is referring to a system of belief that does not accept the Bible as the supreme authority in the lives of believers, or accept the absolute truthfulness of what is written in it.

Grudem bases this concern of his in many of the arguments made in support of egalitarianism. They are, he says, often exactly the same arguments used first in liberal Protestant denomination--arguments that deny (although sometimes in subtle ways) that the text of scripture is completely error free, and that what we find written there is the final arbitrator of things in a believer's life and in the life of the church.

Grudem's first argument is from history. He makes the case that, generally speaking, denominations that ordain women are also denominations that at least tolerate liberalism. The lists are interesting, and it does seem that the ordination of women and a denial of the inerrancy of scripture (or at least a tolerance of those who deny the inerrancy of scripture) tend to go hand in hand within denominations. I'm ot sure exactly what this proves, but the correlation is worth noting.

The second section of the book is a collection of short chapters (fifteen in all), with each one examining a single argument put forward by evangelical feminists. Each arguments examined is one that Grudem believes undermines the authority of scripture. I won't run through the various arguments, but I will give you one example, and a summary of Grudem's reasoning for his charge that this particular argument undermines scripture.

The first chapter in this section deals with a couple of arguments that put forward the idea that the account of creation given to us in Genesis 1-3 is not exactly accurate. One of the arguments, made by William Webb, is that the priority of Adam's creation, with instructions given by God to Adam alone, is not the way things really happened; but rather, is a literary device, perhaps used to foreshadow the curse, or used by Moses to make things easier for people of his time and culture to understand the story, or used to anticipate life in an agrarian society. The point of denying the historicity of the text that says that Adam was created first is that this makes it possible to argue that when Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:13, where he argues from Adam's creation before Eve that women are not to exercise authority over a man, the argument he uses is merely a cultural one, and not one rooted in the actual events of creation. At the very least, it's an odd way for someone with a high view of scripture to handle the text; but further, it seems a little like toying with the evidence for the purpose of coming to one's desired conclusion. Grudem's point is that this argument iss a step on the road to denying the inerrancy of scripture by denying that the Genesis account represents the historical events of creation.

There are many more troubling arguments in this section. Some, like the example above, deny the authority of scripture by claiming that the text is wrong in some way. Other arguments simply claim that there are certain things that trump the authority of scripture, like experience, or "calling" or individual circumstances.

The next section of Evangelical Feminism deals with arguments that are based on claims that come mostly from conjecture, either about what a certain word really means, or what the particular circumstances surrounding a text really were. These conjectures allow for whole new interpretations of some passages, but the unsubstantiated nature of the claims upon which these interpretations are made make the interpretations themselves speculative at best, and yet the claims are not presented as speculations, but as already proven facts.

There are ten chapters in this section dealing with various unsubstantiated claims. You've heard some of them, I'm sure. There's the claim, for instance, that the women in the church of Corinth were particularly unruly or disruptive. Did you know there is really no evidence, either internal to the text of 1 Corinthians or historical, that this was so? Yet you will hear it repeated--I certainly have--as if it were historical fact/

Have you heard that the women of Ephesus were uneducated, so that's why Paul forbids them to teach? There is no historical evidence that this was the case, and what historical evidence there is points to the existence of educated women there--like Priscilla, for one. Nevertheless, you will hear this unsubstantiated theory bandied about as if there were something more than guess work behind it.

That last section of the book deals with Grudem's prediction of where it is that evangelical feminism is leading: toward the denial of the uniquely masculine (or feminine) except the physical differences; toward a God whom we can address as "our Mother", even though he never describes himself this way; and toward an approval of homosexual practice.

The last chapter is a summary of the argument of this book: that the evangelical feminist arguments persistently undermine the authority of scripture, and ultimately, it is the high view of scripture that is at stake in this debate. Perhaps you are thinking, as I was, that there must be egalitarians who do not use any of these sorts of arguments. Grudem's response is that every egalitarian author that he knows uses at least some of these arguments.

It should be noted that Grudem is not saying that all (or even most) egalitarians are liberals, or moving personally toward liberalism. What he is saying is that, while many egalitarians may affirm the authority of scripture, many of their arguments undermine scripture's authority, so that it is toward liberalism that egalitarianism is likely leading, with each successive generation going further in that direction.

Like all of Grudem's books, there are extensive footnotes that allow you to check out everything he says to see if his claims are really so. I also appreciate his care in presenting the arguments of those whose ideas he is opposing. He seems to go out of his way to get their position exactly right without any exaggeration, and I like that.

Even though I've written reviews of a couple of books on the subject of egalitarianism, this is not a subject I am naturally interested in. I'm a complementarian, and I know why I believe what I believe, but I've not been fascinated by the ins and outs of all the arguments. But I do think it's an important subject, perhaps more important than I understood previously, and Evangelical Feminism: A New Path to Liberalism? is an important book on the subject, and one that is easily read and understood by a non-expert reader like me.

Marijuana Chemistry: Genetics, Processing, Potency

Marijuana Chemistry: Genetics, Processing, Potency
Michael Starks | 1993-03-17 00:00:00 | Ronin Publishing | 199 | Social Sciences
Marijuana Chemistry is a one-of-a-kind book that explains the various psychoactive constituents of cannabis, with full discussions of the effect of growth conditions, harvesting, and processing, and method of ingestion on potency. This new edition of the widely respected classic features 64 pages of updates based on current research and black market studies.
Reviews
This book was made for the stoner nerds of the world. I seriously would not recommend it for anyone that isn't a serious reader. It is extremely complex and it's dealing with a somewhat dangerous process if you don't know what you're doing. At the same time, if you are not afraid to risk blowing yourself up by turning your kitchen into a makeshift lab, this is the book for you.

Even if you aren't interested in the extraction section of the book, this book has really good information about choosing the right strains (high CBD) for use in making hash oil. So I'd definitely recommend it as a beach read.

I bought this book to learn how to extract thc through isomerization. I have never taken a college chemistry class so this book is in no way simple for me to understand. However, after reading the sections on extraction a few times and writing notes it is possible to figure out. I'll write a follow up review when I have a chance to compare yield by this books method and the youtube method.
Reviews
This book, like many others pertaining to this subject matter on the market today, is outdated. I have purchased quite a few books written by various authors on this particular subject matter and have come to the conclusion that if you want current, VALID, information it is best to check the publication date prior to purchasing.

As a rule of thumb, if the book was published prior to 2006, don't waste your time and money. As always, there are exceptions to this rule, but they are few and very far between.

Reviews
If you want to know about THC then this is the book to get about just that. Be warned! This is heavy on the chemistry and is mostly devoted to that science and so if you do not know much about chemistry then you may only get the benefits from the sections on processing and potency.
Reviews
If you like science and chemistry and cannabis then this is the book for you. It is everything about cannabinoids (the main psychoactive ingredients in cannabis). This is an excellent resourse for the chemistry minded cannabis lover.
Reviews
This book uses data collected from the pre-Reagan ban on marijuana studies to make good informed conclusions about cannabis. It dips into most everything but I wanted more genetic information.

The Risk Society and Beyond: Critical Issues for Social Theory

The Risk Society and Beyond: Critical Issues for Social Theory
Professor Barbara Adam,Ulrich Beck,Dr Joost Van Loon | 2000-07-27 00:00:00 | Sage Publications Ltd | 240 | Social Sciences
Ulrich Beck's Risk Society established risk on the sociological agenda. It brought together a wide range of issues centering on environmental, health and personal risk, provided a rallying ground for researchers and activists in a variety of social movements and acted as a reference point for state and local policies in risk management.

The Risk Society and Beyond charts the progress of Beck's ideas and traces their evolution. It demonstrates why the issues raised by Beck reverberate widely throughout social theory and covers the new risks that Beck did not foresee, associated with the emergence of new technologies, genetic and cybernetic. The book is unique because it offers both an introduction to the main arguments in Risk Society and develops a range of critical discussions of aspects of this and other works of Beck. The book includes a reply to his critics from Beck himself.

The book is the most comprehensive and authoritative analysis of the implications of risk society that is currently available. It will be essential reading for students in the social and political sciences, environmental studies, media and cultural studies and philosophy.

Risks in the Making: Travels in Life Insurance and Genetics (Amsterdam University Press - Care and Welfare Series)

Risks in the Making: Travels in Life Insurance and Genetics (Amsterdam University Press - Care and Welfare Series)
Ine Van Hoyweghen | 2007-04-04 00:00:00 | Amsterdam University Press | 256 | Social Sciences
In recent decades, insurance companies, scientists, and public officials have debated the potential use of genetic testing in insurance decisions. With Risks in the Making, Ine van Hoyweghen alters the terms of the debate, moving it from abstract, theoretical grounds to the question of how insurance companies actually work. Through an empirical ethnographic study of life insurance in Belgium, van Hoyweghen reveals fascinating and important details about insurance practices and risk management, underscoring the diversity of insurance markets, underwriting practices, and strategies.

The Archaeology of Identity: Approaches to Gender, Age, Statues, Ethnicity and Religion

The Archaeology of Identity: Approaches to Gender, Age, Statues, Ethnicity and Religion
Margarita Diaz-Andreu,Sam Lucy,Stasa Babic,David N. Edwards | 2005-12-16 00:00:00 | Routledge | 192 | Social Sciences
The Archaeology of Identity presents an overview of five of the key areas which have recently emerged in archaeological social theory: gender, age, ethnicity, religion and status. This book reviews the research history of each area, and the different ways in which they have been investigated, as well as offering potential ways forward. Emphasis is placed on exploring the ways in which material culture is structured by these aspects of individual and communal identity, with a particular stress on social practice.

A wealth of scholarship is brought together in this book, which provides an integrated approach to identity not commonly found in similar studies. This book is suitable for students and readers interested in issues of identity, issues pertinent today, as well as social scientists dealing with similar aspects in sociology, anthropology and history.

GIS-based Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences

GIS-based Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences
Atsuyuki Okabe | 2005-10-31 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 344 | Social Sciences
Studies in the humanities and the social sciences can be enhanced through the use of geographic information systems (GIS). However, this computer-aided method of analysis is worthless unless researchers can devote the time necessary to learn what it is, what it can do, and how to use it.

Resulting from a six-year project entitled Spatial Information Science for the Humanities and Social Sciences (SIS for HSS), GIS-Based Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences details the tools and processes for deploying GIS in economic and social analyses.

Through the use of this book, readers can understand how GIS technology can be utilized in advancing studies. This volume will also encourage professionals in humanities and the social sciences to employ new GIS-based methods in their own research.
Reviews
A great many of the studies made in the humanities and social sciences have a geographical component. It may be the development of communities along transportation systems -- New Orleans was positioned where it is because it was the meeting place between river bound traffic and ocean going vessels.

Much of the studies made in a wide variety of areas like tax income, crime rates, migration patterns, housing prices, school/medical/fire/police services produce geographically oriented data that can better be displayed on a map than any other way.

Modern Geographical Information Systems have come a long way from the very expensive software systems of years past that also required the use of very expensive workstations. Indeed much of the needed software is now abailable at no cost. One chapter in the book details the efforts of the author and others in finding or establishing web sites that point to software of particular interest to the social sciences. Further the extremely rapid development of very powerful personal computer systems has completely overtaken the expensive workstations of the past.

This book is the result of a six year study conducted by Dr. Okabe at the University of Tokyo.

Erotics and Politics: Gay Male Sexuality, Masculinity and Feminism (Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities)

Erotics and Politics: Gay Male Sexuality, Masculinity and Feminism (Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities)
Tim Edwards | 1994-02-08 00:00:00 | Routledge | 208 | Social Sciences
"Erotics and Politics" provides an interface between the study of sexuality (particularly gay male studies) and gender (primarily feminism). In doing so, it covers a wide range of issues of concern to gay and feminist movements over the past 25 years, including gay liberational sexuality, sado-masochism, pornography, promiscuity, personal relationships, AIDS and postmodernity. The central focus of attention throughout is the nature, development and consequence of gay male sexuality and masculinity. This study aims to cover a wide range of issues, and to connect subjects which are typically examined separately.
Reviews
Edwards tryed to cover the arena size dimension of (not just male homosexuality) but masculinity and feminism to boot- in a micro court of 172 pages! the paragraphs are stuffy, the chapters are inconsistent. keep looking.
