Nonparametric Econometric Methods

Nonparametric Econometric Methods
Qi Li, Jeffrey Scott Racine | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Emerald Group Publishing Limited | 549 | Finances and Money
This Volume of "Advances in Econometrics" contains a selection of papers presented initially at the 7th Annual Advances in Econometrics Conference held on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana during November 14-16, 2008. The theme of the conference was 'Nonparametric Econometric Methods', and the papers selected for inclusion in this Volume span a range of nonparametric techniques including kernel smoothing, empirical copulas, series estimators, and smoothing splines along with a variety of semiparametric methods. The papers in this Volume cover topics of interest to those who wish to familiarize themselves with current nonparametric methodology. Many papers also identify areas deserving of future attention. There exist survey papers devoted to recent developments in nonparametric nance, constrained nonparametric regression, miparametric/nonparametric environmental econometrics and nonparametric models with non-stationary data. There exist theoretical papers dealing with novel approaches for partial identification of the distribution of treatment effects, xed effects semiparametric panel data models, functional coefficient models with time series data, exponential series estimators of empirical copulas, estimation of multivariate CDFs and bias-reduction methods for density estimation. There also exist a number of applications that analyze returns to education, the evolution of income and life expectancy, the role of governance in growth, farm production, city size and unemployment rates, derivative pricing, and environmental pollution and economic growth. In short, this Volume contains a range of theoretical developments, surveys, and applications that would be of interest to those who wish to keep abreast of some of the most important current developments in the field of nonparametric estimation.

The Internationalisation of Mobile Telecommunications: Strategic Challenges in a Global Market

The Internationalisation of Mobile Telecommunications: Strategic Challenges in a Global Market
Peter Curwen, Jason Whalley | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Edward Elgar Pub | 276 | Finances and Money
Peter Curwen and Jason Whalley review the strategic operations of, and technological options available to, the 30 most prominent international mobile operators. This review is initially based upon the Asia-Pacific, African, European, Latin American and North American regions before moving on to take a worldwide perspective. The authors place these mobile operators within a wider business context via a broad ten-year appraisal of the companies involved in the entire telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) sector. The issue as to whether there truly is such a thing as a global mobile operator is addressed; the answer, in practice, is negative.

Based upon the very latest data available, the underlying premise of the book is that mobile telecommunications is such a fast-moving sector that operators are obliged to alter their international strategies as circumstances unravel without necessarily having a long-term master plan, and hence that opportunism is a hallmark of operators' international strategies.

This state-of-the-art overview of the internationalisation of mobile telecommunications will prove essential reading for academics and practitioners with a vested interest in technology, telecommunications and strategic management.

Guide to Financial Management

Guide to Financial Management
John Tennent | 2008-06-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Finances and Money
This book presents a very straight forward and a practical approach in explaining complicated financial concepts. One salient difference of this book, when compared to other Corporate Finance books is that, the author draws very good practical examples at various stages when explaining the actual use of financial concepts.
My motivation for buying this book was two fold.
Firstly I wanted to refresh the subject matter I learned under Financial Management of the MBA program I followed sometime back. Although at the moment I am not very much involved in Finance related activities, in future it is likely that my job scope will involve Finance to a greater extent. The simplicity of explanations and the practical insights suggest that you do NOT need to have followed an MBA to understand the concepts.
Secondly the decision to buy this book was fairly swift. This is because I was already reading one of the books co-authored by the same author John Tennent which is "Guide to Financial Modeling" which is yet another down right practical guide to financial modeling.
This book strikes a very rare balance between Simplicity (In Explaining), Practicality and Comprehensiveness of the subject matter covered. In my opinion this book fills up a much needed void in the field of Financial Management.

Seeds and Synergies: Innovating Rural Development in China

Seeds and Synergies: Innovating Rural Development in China
Song Yiching, Ronnie Vernooy | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Practical Action | 152 | Finances and Money
Farmers and researchers too often live and work in different realities. Researchers breed plant hybrids in the laboratory that are successful only under ideal conditions, requiring just the right inputs of water, fertilizer, and pesticides. For resource-poor farmers, however, such conditions simply don’t exist. As a result, they either obtain poor results from high-tech seeds or continue to do the best they can with local varieties.

Seeds and Synergies reflects on the innovative efforts of a group of Chinese researchers and extension agents to connect scientists and farmers. Their action research has enabled indigenous women and men in local communities to improve maize varieties jointly with professional plant breeders. This has invigorated maize production, created new livelihoods, and strengthened organizational capacities. The research has also resulted in policy changes in plant breeding, in the conservation of agricultural biodiversity, in the protection of indigenous knowledge, in farmer organization, and in the provision of services, notably extension.

This book will be of particular interest to rural development scholars, researchers, teachers and trainers, and field-level practitioners.

Capitol Investments: The Marketability of Political Skills

Capitol Investments: The Marketability of Political Skills
Glenn R. Parker | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | University of Michigan Press | 216 | Finances and Money
What would you do if, the very day you were hired, you knew you could be unemployed in as little as two years? You'd seek opportunities in your current job to develop a portfolio of skills and contacts in order to make yourself more attractive to future employers. Representatives and senators think about their jobs in Congress in this way, according to Glenn R. Parker.

While in office, members of Congress plan not merely for the next election but for the next stage of their careers. By networking, serving on committees, and championing particular legislation, they deliberately accumulate human capital---expertise, networks, and reputation---which later will give them bargaining power in the job market. Parker's study of the postelective careers of more than 200 former members of Congress, both U.S. representatives and senators, who have left office during the last half century shows that such strategic planning generally succeeds. In most cases, the human capital these politicians amassed while in office increased their occupational mobility and earning power.

Capitol Investments offers a sophisticated yet accessible analysis of the acquisition and marketability of political skills. It suggests that an awareness of the trade in human capital shapes an officeholder's actions as much as the desire to win another election.

Glenn R. Parker is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science at Purdue University.

Waging War on Complexity Costs

Waging War on Complexity Costs
Stephen A. Wilson, Andrei Perumal | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | MgH | 352 | Finances and Money
Shed Revenue-Draining Complexity Costs by Thirty Percent!

“This is an ambitious book packed with insight and fresh thinking. Separating good from bad complexity costs is a critical task facing companies today, and the authors provide a compelling roadmap for solving the problem.”
Michael B. McCallister, President and CEO, Humana Inc.

“Waging War on Complexity Costs examines an incredibly important and often overlooked aspect of business and organizations in general—regulators and government officials should read this book and take notice. Complexity dramatically increases costs and risk of failure. It is like a cancer that eats away at efficiency and profitability.”
Andy Beal, Chairman and CEO, Beal Bank

“This is by far the best and most useful explanation of how to address complexity in a business. Waging War on Complexity Costs frames the issue in a way that companies can finally tackle the problem—this book delivers.”
Ahmad R. Chatila, CEO, MEMC Electronic Materials Inc.

“This is the first book that really targets organizational complexity in a compelling way, making this a must-read for any organization that is looking to distance itself from the competition. After years of cost-cutting, many companies are realizing that they still don’t have a discernable cost advantage. This book provides the platform to achieve just that, by attacking the complexity that bogs them down.”
Tom DiDonato, EVP Human Resources, American Eagle Outfitters, Inc.

Coaching the Team at Work

Coaching the Team at Work
David Clutterbuck | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Nicholas Brealey Publishing | 276 | Finances and Money
Much has been written about coaching individuals, yet there has been little investigation of coaching teams at work. Even in organizations that have made strides towards becoming coaching cultures, the focus has been on the individual, not the team. This failure is now a serious weakness in the abilities of managers at all levels.

In this book David Clutterbuck bridges the gap between what is known about team learning and coaching and the practical experience of managers and team coaches. He answers such questions as how team coaching differs from individual coaching, what skills underpin effective team coaching, and how team coaching can be made a sustainable, automatic process.

It is clearly accepted that good governance is fundamental to the successfully continuing operating of any organisation. Corporate governance has gained tremendous importance in recent years, due to the developments brought about through globalisation concerning the harmonisation of procedures and structures and through the emergence of global norms for corporate governance. One factor which is significantly affected by such governance is that of risk assessment and management. Good governance reduces risk and facilitates its management. This is the focus of this book.

Trading Options at Expiration: Strategies and Models for Winning the Endgame

Trading Options at Expiration: Strategies and Models for Winning the Endgame
Jeff Augen | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Finances and Money
I'm an options trader. That's how I make my living. I've read all the books, been to the seminars, and have the scars from experience. So believe me when I say this book is different. It's not the same options books with a different cover. It's not going to start all over from scratch about what are options. This little book is packed with an out-of-the box winning strategy that takes advantage of the institutional moves (for once!). The pinning of stocks on expiration day is a phenomena that has been noted for some time. How to make money from this is not so clear. Mr. Augen takes advantage of institutional trading behavior on expiration day and details not only which stocks to trade but which strategy and what time of day to apply each strategy. [read this last sentence again] This approach is not conjecture but a statistical study as to how certain stocks move. This is a genuine money making strategy that can earn 200%-300% or more in a few hours. Just recently a straddle purchased on a stock mentioned in the book could have been purchased for $1 and sold for $6 a few hours later. The beautiful thing is that institutions can't even take advantage of this strategy!
My previous favorite book on options was Mr. Augen's Volatility Edge which, again, is in a class by itself. His next book was the Options Trader's Workbook which will push your knowledge on options like no other. I don't know why Mr. Augen is disseminating this strategy that most people would jealously guard. I can only assume from the nature of his other books that he is one of those who loves to teach and sees success in other people's success. Thank you Mr. Augen!

New Rules of Marketing and PR

New Rules of Marketing and PR
David Meerman | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | | 305 | Finances and Money
At the height of the dot-com boom, I was vice president of marketing
at NewsEdge Corporation, a NASDAQ-traded online
news distributor with more than $70 million in annual revenue. My
multimillion-dollar marketing budget included tens of thousands of
dollars per month for a public relations agency, hundreds of thousands
per year for print advertising and glossy collateral materials,
and expensive participation at a dozen trade shows a year. My team
put these things on our marketing to-do list, worked like hell to execute,
and paid the big bucks because that’s what marketing and PR
people did. These efforts made us feel good because we were doing
something, but the programs were not producing significant, measurable
results.
At the same time, drawing on experience I had gained in my previous
position as Asia marketing director for the online division of
Knight-Ridder, then one of the largest newspaper companies in the
world, my team and I quietly created content-based, “thought leadership”
marketing and PR programs on the Web. Against the advice
of the PR agency professionals we had on retainer (who insisted that
press releases were only for the press), we wrote and sent dozens of
releases ourselves. Each time we sent a release, it appeared on online
services such as Yahoo!, resulting in sales leads. Even though our advertising
agency told us not to put the valuable information “somewhere
where competitors could steal it,” we created a monthly
newsletter called TheEdge about the exploding world of digital news
and made it freely available on the homepage of our Web site because
it generated interest from buyers, the media, and analysts. Way back in
the 1990s, when Web marketing and PR was in its infancy
