The number of publications focused on neurosteroids has increased exponentially since a multidisciplinary group at the National Institute of Mental Health in the United States published a study on y-aminobutyric acid-related neurosteroids in 1986. Among the multiple reasons for this increasing interest in neurosteroids are their roles in stress, alcohol dependence and withdrawal, and other physiological and pharmacological actions, including potentiation or inhibition of neurotransmitter action.
