A Philosophy of Intellectual Property (Applied Legal Philosophy)
Peter Drahos | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Dartmouth Publishing Group | 257 | Antitrust
This work attempts to address the question, "Can we accommodate intellectual property within one or more of the existing general accounts of property, or should we develop a distinctive theory of intellectual property?" Locke, Hegel and Marx are drawn upon in the discussion.
Reviews
If one were to agree with everything any writer says, particularly in a book of this magnitude and depth, there would be an immediate cloud of suspicion yet, in spite of the fact that I do not agree with all of the points made in Drahos' work, it is one the best books that I have ever read. To give some context to this statement, I happen to think that John Dewey's "How We Think", Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" and Sorensen's "Thought Experiments" are near equals of the book in this review. Any book that can only be read 2-3 pages a night and that stimulates one to ask so many questions about creativity, economics, metaphysics and education at such a fundamental level, necessitates it being put on a "must read" list near the top.
No doubt there are many who will see this review and say "what a wanker" but that's because more than 90% of the world's workforce has no clue as to why they are really there nor what the cornerstone of all economic activity actually is.
Inquiring minds want to know. To maximize the latent potential of this book, I would recommend this critical thinking site which interestingly is also Australian ..
All companies need better thinkers and those that understand why they are there because when you know the "why", the "what" is a whole lot easier.
One caveat: I strongly disagree with the suggestions in the book that IP belongs to everyone or that it "must" be shared and will refute this in a book of my own, hopefully by the end of 2003. Otherwise, the book rates up there in the way, Jose Wales, Amadeus and Good Will Hunting do as movies. Substance counts! Drahos gives you your money's worth. (I have no connection with Australia, Australians nor Dr. Drahos. I found this book in the course of my own research on Amazon.com)
