Systematics as Cyberscience: Computers, Change, and Continuity in Science (Inside Technology)

Systematics as Cyberscience: Computers, Change, and Continuity in Science (Inside Technology)
| 2008-03-31 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

The use of information and communication technology in scientific research has been hailed as the means to a new larger-scale, more efficient, and cost-effective science. But although scientists increasingly use computers in their work and institutions have made massive investments in technology, we still have little idea how computing affects the way scientists work and the kind of knowledge they produce. In Systematics as Cyberscience, Christine Hine explores these questions by examining the developing use of information and communication technology in one discipline, systematics (which focuses on the classification and naming of organisms and exploration of evolutionary relationships). Her sociological study of the ways that biologists working in this field have engaged with new technology is an account of how one of the oldest branches of science transformed itself into one of the newest and became a cyberscience.

Combining an ethnographic approach with historical review and textual analysis, Hine investigates the emergence of a virtual culture in systematics and how that new culture is entwined with the field's existing practices and priorities. Hine examines the policy perspective on technological change, the material culture of systematics (and how the virtual culture aligns with it), communication practices with new technology, and the complex dynamics of change and continuity on the institutional level. New technologies have stimulated reflection on the future of systematics and prompted calls for radical transformation, but the outcomes are thoroughly rooted in the heritage of the discipline. Hine argues that to understand the impact of information and communication technology in science we need to take account of the many complex and conflicting pressures that contemporary scientists navigate. The results of technological developments are rarely unambiguous gains in efficiency, and are highly discipline-specific.

Information Storage and Retrieval Systems: Theory and Implementation (The Information Retrieval Series)

Information Storage and Retrieval Systems: Theory and Implementation (The Information Retrieval Series)
| 2000-09-30 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

This book provides a theoretical and practical explanation of the latest advancements in information retrieval and their application to existing systems. It takes a system approach, discussing all aspects of an Information Retrieval System. The major difference between this book and the first edition is the addition to this text of descriptions of the automated indexing of multimedia documents, as items in information retrieval are now considered to be a combination of text along with graphics, audio, image and video data types. The growth of the Internet and the availability of enormous volumes of data in digital form have necessitated intense interest in techniques to assist the user in locating data. The importance of the Internet and its associated hypertext linked structure are put into perspective as a new type of information retrieval data structure. The total system approach also includes discussion of the human interface and the importance of information visualization for identification of relevant information. With the availability of large quantities of multi-media on the Internet (audio, video, images), Information Retrieval Systems need to address multi-modal retrieval. The primary use of this book is as a college text on Information Retrieval Systems. But in addition to the theoretical aspects, the book maintains a theme of practicality that puts into perspective the importance and utilization of the theory in systems that are being used by anyone on the Internet. The student will gain an understanding of what is achievable using existing technologies and deficient areas that warrant additional research. The text provides coverage of all of the major aspects of information retrieval and has sufficient detail to allow students to implement a simple Information Retrieval System.

The Computer Contradictionary: 2nd Edition

The Computer Contradictionary: 2nd Edition
| 1995-04-10 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

Warning: If you aren't a true-blue geek, you won't even have a clue as to why this cracked glossary of computing terms is supposed to be funny. But if you're capable of finding humor in jokes about OO programming, TCP/IP, Bjarne Stroustrup, and operating system kernels, The Computer Contradictionary is truly hilarious. Sample: `ISAM ,,. One of the most successful data-security systems so far devised. Information is protected from all but the most persistent, patient, and devious.` If you're even tempted to smile, you'll enormously enjoy British author Stan Kelly-Bootle's witty, urbane, and well-informed parody.

User review
A Good Book for Geeks Who Love to Laugh
This little bit of whimsy is a lot of fun. It's a fun book to keep on the shelf for those times you're too frustrated to go on coding and you need just a bit of comic relief.

User review
Cool
The guy who slagged this book off is talking out of his bottom. This book is brill, we all love it over here and Stan Kelly Bootle is a dude!

User review
Definately NOT a waste of money! Very funny!
I read The Devil's DP Dictionary in 1981 when it was first published and absolutely loved it. (I'm a computer nerd so that's to be expected.) Since then that book has gotten a bit dated and I've been waiting for Kelly-Bootle to update it. Let me say that The Computer Contradictionary is everything that I hoped it would be and more. I must also strongly disagree with the customer reviewer who stated `Don't waste your money`. I've read the Jargon File (a.k.a. The New Hacker's Dictionary) and while I rate it as highly as the book in question I must say that one really cannot compare the two. The Jargon File, while extremely funny, is a real dictionary with real definitions of hacker jargon. The Computer Contradictionary on the other hand is not intended to give real definitions at all. It exists simply to make us laugh through satire, irony, and Kelly-Bootle's irreverent wit. In fact it's required that one already know the definitions of the words he `defines` or they wouldn't be funny. This was also the requirement of the work that Kelly-Bootle paid homage to in this, and his first book, namely The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce.

User review
New & Improved Rev. 2.0!!
This is `The Devils DP Dictionary` Rev.2.0 not to be missed by anybody who has been around for long enough to not trust Rev.2.0 of anything. All known bugs have been fixed and countless new features added. Year 2000 compliant, biodegradable and politically incorrect. (Do not lend this book to anybody, you will not get it back.)

User review
Don't waste your money
OK, If you do want to waste your money, you will find a few entries that are a bit funny, but they are few and far between. For the most part this screwed-up dictionary has nothing going for it. It seems like this guy pulled most of the definition right out of his [expletive deleted by author]. Of course, with the title it has, it quickly made its way around this company made of geeks. General consensus was, why did I buy that????? On average, MIT Press does a decent job of producing good books, but they missed the boat on this one. Must have been because of Kelly-Bootle's status in the computer culture. If you want a good dictionary that is also a hilarious read, pick up the New Hackers Dictionary, or just look around for the Jargon file out there on the net

Enlightening
Well, there is not a better way to understand any kind of processes than knowing the way it works. That is exactly the point of this book, and it is done in a didactic, uncomplicated way. You can find your own pathways to interact, program and get more and more from R. It will help with functions understanding and customizations, starting from the basic S language to R's specifics characteristics and goals. This book turns R easier than I have expected.

User review
could have been titled _Understanding_How_R_works_
For the past year or so I have been puttering with R, but never really `got it`. This book is just what I've been looking for, to understand what R is `thinking`. It isn't a cookbook with loads of examples, but a thorough guide to understanding how R works and how to be productive in it. After only an hour, I understand data.frames, and the environment structure better than several nights of struggling with the online documentation. This isn't really a book about how to analyze data, it's about becoming comfortable and expert in R to make it easy to analyze data. Once you understand the tool, the data analysis becomes much much easier.

I agree with the reviewers who say it's chatty, but that makes it very readable. You don't have to work every example to understand the points the book is making. Likewise, it _is_ cross referenced to death, but it's easy enough to read over the links, and when you're trying to make sense of something, the cross references do take you to the right information to round out a picture.

A legend and pioneer of Graphic statistics
John Chambers, a pioneer and legend for many statistician who is the father of S language and the dream fulfiller for statisticians. The graphic statistics is once a dream for statistician from 1960's. Many statistician once dreamed about to use the high-quality graphics to say something about statistics. the dream get realized by Mr. chambers. The S language is born from the Bell lab which is a great place for the Unix lovers and the once expensive printer users. Now it is transplanted to the Microsoft Windows more than two decades. Mr. Chambers helps statistician fulfill the dream of last century- the graphic statistics and brings the people to the promised land of statistical computing. He is a superstar for statisticians, like Jeff Bezos to the Online book selling. The legend has something to say. So,,we,,LISTEN,,,,.

User review
The gateway from 'pretty good' to 'expert'
This is not an introductory text, and should not be the first R book in your collection. However, if you are a `pretty good` R programmer and want to take the next step in becoming an `expert` R programmer, this is your Bible.

For me, this book fills the hole of understanding how R thinks. To get a complete and accurate view of why R works the way it does, the author supplements the technical discussion with the philosophy of R, as well as pieces of the history of statistical computing and computing in general.

Others might consider this integration of technical detail with philosophical and historical background (complete with Star Trek references) to be `wordy`, but this is precisely why I bought the book. If one is interested only in the purely technical aspects, the thorough documentation on the R website is free. I consider the insights - provided by the mind that laid the foundation for R in S - to be well worth the price of the book.

That said, this book is an invaluable guide (both technical and philosophical) on the road to becoming an R expert. I'm looking forward to putting some dog ears on my copy.

User review
just okay
I bought this book at the 2008 JSM. After I read the first 3 chapters I found that it is too wordy. But I have to agree that this is a good book for understanding the basic mechanism of R. If you are an advanced user you might want to read the S programming which is written by W.N. Venables & B.D Ripley. It is much better than Software for Data Analysis with R.

Elgg Social Networking: Create and manage your own social network site using this free open-source tool (From Technologies to Solutions)

Elgg Social Networking: Create and manage your own social network site using this free open-source tool (From Technologies to Solutions)
| 2008-03-28 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

In Detail

Elgg is an open-source social web application licensed under GPL version 2, and runs on the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) or WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP) platform. It offers a networking platform combining elements of blogging, e-portfolios, news feed aggregation, file sharing, and social networking. Elgg has its own plug-in architecture, and can use plug-ins to provide a calendar and a wiki. It supports a number of open standards including RSS, LDAP for authentication, FOAF, and XML-RPC for integration with most third-party blogging clients. It can be integrated with MediaWiki, Moodle, Drupal, and WebCT.

Elgg provides each user with a personal weblog, file repository (with podcasting capabilities), an online profile, and an RSS reader. Additionally, all of a user's content can be tagged with keywords--so they can connect with other users with similar interests and create their own personal learning network. However, where Elgg differs from a regular weblog or a commercial social network (such as MySpace) is the degree of control each user is given over who can access their content. Each profile item, blog post, or uploaded file can be assigned its own access restrictions--from fully public to readable only by a particular group or individual.

Using Elgg is the easiest way to create your own fully customized, hosted social network for your business, organization, or group of friends. Elgg communities can include blogs, discussion groups, media galleries, friends' lists, and much more. Because it's open source, and has many plug-ins, Elgg can be extended in unlimited ways. Elgg lets you host your own Facebook-style social network and retain complete control over how it works. This book shows you all you need to know to create safe, fun social networks.

While anybody can use Elgg to create their social network, it is especially useful in education as it has many features making it suitable for e-learning, including groups, communities, and blogs that can be used for online classes where students can communicate in a new way with each other and with students around the world--in a managed, protected environment, creating what its authors term a `personal learning landscape`. This book also covers using Elgg in teaching/learning.

What you will learn from this book?

Get started with your Social networking site Customize your site's appearance to give it a unique styleInvite friends, create groups, and start blogsAutomate your user registrationHost photos, videos, and MP3s--enable users to comment and discuss them Use Elgg as a group podcasting platformCreate, improve, and maintain a communityProtect your network from spam

Approach

This book has a very easy-to-follow approach that will teach you how to do things with examples and lots of screenshots. As an example the book builds a community site for Linux administrators.

Who this book is written for?

This book is aimed at people interested in social networking and e-learning teachers.

User review
Waste of money & time ,,. completely useless!!!
This books is well written but completely useless. The directory structure is totally different than my install, making the tips here completely useless. None of the customizations work with my version and installation of elgg. A book on Microsoft Excel Macros would be as helpful as this @$#^&/.

Very disappointed!!!

User review
Elgg social networking book review
This book sets out to be both a user's guide and an installation and customisation guide for the Elgg social networking software. It definitely achieves both. The book begins with a useful discussion on social networking, introducing such concepts as blogs, communities, tags and friends. It follows this with a chapter devoted to a tour of Elgg, taking the reader through signing up for an account and then an introduction to personalising the new account. This chapter states it is an extended feature list of Elgg - in fact on reading this chapter alone readers will have sufficient information to make good use of Elgg. Further chapters take the reader through detailed explorations of the various features of the software. The book finishes off with case studies of a couple of Elgg installations.

The book really is in two parts, with a clear division between the two. Chapters 2 to 5 form a user manual, with chapters 6 and 7 and the first appendix telling the reader how to install and customise the software in a much more technical fashion. If using someone else's Elgg installation, the first chapters form an extremely useful guide to everything a user needs to know to get the most out of Elgg. The chapters on customisation and plug-ins are written in a similar friendly fashion to the rest of the book and the author has managed to get the technical information across very effectively. It is good to see that relevant warnings are included too.

The writing style is really good. It was nice to see that the author is not shy of criticising the software a little where needed, for example by pointing out the all-or-nothing nature of system admin roles in Elgg. The whole text is easy to understand and provides a useful reference or how-to guide for Elgg. The icing on the cake for me is that the book even showed me something new and I have been running Elgg for over two years now.

User review
Elgg Social Networking - Book Review

The book is meant to act as both an introduction to Elgg in general (it's a locally managed social network that you can build) and to getting the software up and running on a LAMP or WAMP machine. By approaching the writing in this way, Sharma does a terrific job in scaling up the technical discourse as the book progresses. For example, the first few chapters outline some of the simple social networking features (friends list, profiles, tag clouds) for people who are new to the world of social networking.

Where the text shines is in it's simple, yet effective scaffolding of difficulty as it progresses into more complicated functions of Elgg like customization of your profiles, CSS and in managing and installing plug-ins. The entire text is beautifully supported by helpful images that connect the particulars of a given passage to a concrete example.

Sharma's writing style; direct, simple and clean, really help direct the reader through the text in a way that makes the digestion of all of these potentially new and exciting ideas seem easy.

My favorite section of this book is potentially the most complex section to write about, installing the software on a local machine in order to act as a server. The world of LAMP, (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) can seem daunting to new users setting up a computer. Sharma's easy to follow text, littered with helpful illustrations makes the seemingly esoteric steps involved in setting up LAMP seem simple and manageable. Thanks for the great read! I know that when Elgg version 1.0 drops this summer, I'll have this text handy as I set up a new install to play with!

User review
The best introduction to classic Elgg
I'm the technical lead on Elgg, and have read this book through cover to cover. Independent but accurate and thorough, I absolutely endorse it as a great way to get into the product. This covers versions through 0.9x and is recommended to anyone who wants to start their own social networking site quickly and easily.

User review
do-it-yourself Web 2.0
The recent rise of the so-called Web 2.0 has been driven by the success of sites like MySpace, YouTube and Facebook. All of these are, thus far, closed sites, with massive IT personnel support and data centers. In contrast, what Elgg offers is a way for a single enthusiast of a hobby or subject to rev up her own social website.

Much of the book is taken up with GUI issues. Demonstrating numerous aids for quickly and easily setting up your community and administering it. It looks quite competently done, and there is not much point me going into the low level details of what is available. You should troll the book yourself to find out.

But Elgg is more than just about building a website on a machine. One nifty outreach feature it possesses is for you to search for people. Not restricted to your website. It can go to a central site, Ubuntero, and scan it. The idea here is to enable your website to be more than just a standalone node on the Internet. To be sure, this external searching is somewhat limited, from what I can discern in the text. Nice as far as it goes. However, Elgg developers might [or should] take this idea further. It doesn't have the sheer sweep of Google's search. I realise that the latter is for arbitrary searching on the Web. While the Elgg searching has a more focused objective.

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits: for Multistandard and Low-Voltage Wireless Transceivers (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing)

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits: for Multistandard and Low-Voltage Wireless Transceivers (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing)
| 2007-11-01 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits reviews the fundamentals and studies the state-of-the-art multistandard transceivers before describing novel architectural and circuit techniques for implementing multimode and wideband (tens of MHz) baseband analog front-ends under low-voltage constraints. Techniques developed on architecture level for efficient system-in-package (SiP) integration, testability and multi-standardability; and on circuit level for reducing the required supply voltage, power and area, are generally applicable for most wireless systems, and are somewhat independent to technology scaling. Experimental 1-V baseband building blocks (i.e., double-quadrature-downconversion filter, programmable-gain amplifier and dc-offset canceler) and a 1-V fully-integrated receiver analog-baseband chain for IEEE 802.11a/b/g WLAN validate the techniques. The implementations are all in standard-VTH CMOS process, and no voltage boosting is required at any node.

Analog-Baseband Architectures and Circuits will be relevant to system architects, circuit designers, professors and students engaged in wireless transceiver front-ends research and development.

DocBook 5: The Definitive Guide

DocBook 5: The Definitive Guide
| 2010-05-15 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

The DocBook SGML specification allows publishers to mark up text content to be used in traditional print as well as on the Web. DocBook: The Definitive Guide examines and catalogs the entirety of the DocBook specification and will be useful to anyone who uses SGML to publish documents.

DocBook uses SGML to structure the contents of a book, identifying such elements as authors, chapters, headings, and so on. The heart of DocBook: The Definitive Guide lies in its full reference of over 300 DocBook elements, organized alphabetically (from `Abbrev` to `Year`). The syntax of each element is described, along with sample SGML code illustrating its proper usage.

This book assumes a working knowledge of SGML, though basic concepts are described during the introduction. Later reference sections present a wide range of DocBook `entities.` (These are values that can be used to describe custom content within a DocBook document.) Character entities, codes used to describe diacritics and mathematical symbols, are also listed.

Later sections address DocBook customization, including removal of unused elements. As you might expect, no single publishing scheme employs every SGML element available; however, like any good reference, it includes a discussion of each element that could conceivably be used. Another useful section discusses the relationship between DocBook and XML, including the fairly simple conversion possibilities for cross-translating these markup types.

DocBook is a powerful way to distribute books, both in traditional print and online. Provided you have some knowledge of SGML, anyone who makes use of the DocBook specification will benefit from this worthy reference. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: DocBook basics and SGML/XML; publishing books with DocBook; style sheet languages: FOSIs, DSSSL, CSS, and XSL; DocBook element reference; attribute entities; class entities; common entities; module entities; local attribute entities; mixture entities; module parameter entities; role attribute parameter entities; character entities; customizing DocBook; converting DocBook to XML.

User review
A fine, comprehensive textbook on real-time systems
This is a fine, comprehensive textbook for real-time systems. It covers many aspects of real-time systems in an even, consistent way. For basic, foundational knowledge, Laplante's book in its third edition is probably the finest that I have encountered.

The book is foundational and gives a good overview of concepts important to real-time systems. Don't expect to find the latest `fads` in programming or interesting `tricks of the trade` in the book; that is not the purpose of his book. I use the book to confirm and review basic concepts when developing real-time concepts.

I have 24 years experience in developing various real-time systems: medical devices, military equipment, and spacecraft instruments. I also lecture and write about real-time systems; Laplante's book is a necessary part of my library of real-time books.

User review
A comprehensive treatment, yet written from a practical perspective
As you might imagine from any IEEE Press text, the treatment is practical yet comprehensive. The writing is clear and the author makes extensive use of diagrams wherever applicable. The author also does an excellent job describing RTOS architecture and feature utility depending on the scale of the system, which is a rare find in other books on the subject.

Although the text is not as heavily mathematical as some of the other texts, the author does present analytical techniques as needed, so the book is perfectly useful for system performance analysis. The book is very straigthforward to read and apply, so I would higly recommend this text to students both practitioners. In fact, the information is so accessible that I would go so far to say that it belongs on the bookshelf of anyone that works with real-time embedded systems, even at the academic level.

Communications Policy and Information Technology: Promises, Problems, Prospects (Telecommunications Policy Research Conference)

Communications Policy and Information Technology: Promises, Problems, Prospects (Telecommunications Policy Research Conference)
| 2002-10-04 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

New technologies, although developed with optimism, often fall short of their predicted potential and create new problems. Communications technologies are no different. Their utopian proponents claim that universal access to advanced communications technologies can help to feed the hungry, cure the sick, educate the illiterate, improve the global standard of living, and ultimately bring about world peace. The sobering reality is that while communications technologies have a role to play in making the world a better place, the impact of any specific technological advance is likely to be modest. The limitations of new technologies are often not inherent in the technologies themselves but the result of regulatory or economic constraints. While the capability may exist to deliver any information anywhere in the world, many people lack the money to pay for it, the equipment to access it, the skills to use it, or even the knowledge that it might be useful to them. This book examines the complex ways in which communication technologies and policies affect the people whose lives they are intended to improve. The areas of discussion include Internet regulation, electronic voting and petitioning, monopoly and competition in communications markets, the future of wireless communications, and the concept of universal service.

Practical Interfacing in the Laboratory: Using a PC for Instrumentation, Data Analysis and Control

Practical Interfacing in the Laboratory: Using a PC for Instrumentation, Data Analysis and Control
| 2003-07-14 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

This practical text describes how to use a desk-top computer to monitor and control laboratory experiments. Stephen Derenzo clearly explains how to design electronic circuits and write computer programs to sense, analyze and display real-world quantities, including displacement, temperature, force, sound, light, and biomedical potentials. He includes numerous laboratory exercises and appendices that provide practical information on microcomputer architecture and interfacing, including complete circuit diagrams and component lists. A very basic knowledge of electronics is assumed, making the book ideal for college-level laboratory courses and for practicing engineers and scientists.

Information Assurance Architecture

Information Assurance Architecture
| 2008-06-24 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

Safeguard Your Organization?s Information!

Now that information has become the lifeblood of your organization, you must be especially vigilant about assuring it. The hacker, spy, or cyber-thief of today can breach any barrier if it remains unchanged long enough or has even the tiniest leak. In Information Assurance Architecture, Keith D. Willett draws on his over 25 years of technical, security, and business experience to provide a framework for organizations to align information assurance with the enterprise and their overall mission.

The Tools to Protect Your Secrets from Exposure

This work provides the security industry with the know-how to create a formal information assurance architecture that complements an enterprise architecture, systems engineering, and the enterprise life cycle management (ELCM). Information Assurance Architecture consists of a framework, a process, and many supporting tools, templates and methodologies. The framework provides a reference model for the consideration of security in many contexts and from various perspectives; the process provides direction on how to apply that framework. Mr. Willett teaches readers how to identify and use the right tools for the right job. Furthermore, he demonstrates a disciplined approach in thinking about, planning, implementing and managing security, emphasizing that solid solutions can be made impenetrable when they are seamlessly integrated with the whole of an enterprise.

Understand the Enterprise Context

This book covers many information assurance subjects, including disaster recovery and firewalls. The objective is to present security services and security mechanisms in the context of information assurance architecture, and in an enterprise context of managing business risk. Anyone who utilizes the concepts taught in these pages will find them to be a valuable weapon in the arsenal of information protection.

Standards Battles in Open Source Software: The Case of Firefox

Standards Battles in Open Source Software: The Case of Firefox
| 2008-11-15 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

In many ways, the rise of the open source web browser Firefox contradicts common wisdom and expectations. An industry with network effects, as is the case in the web browser industry, should follow the rationale of `the strong grows stronger, and the weak becomes weaker`. This means that in the long run, a single dominant technology will prevail that prevents competing technologies from obtaining a foothold in the market. We can therefore explain the victory of Internet Explorer (IE) over Netscape mainly because IE was bundled with the Windows operating system; however, we still need to understand the rise of Firefox in a 'winner-takes-all market'. Could the characteristics of Firefox, an open source software web browser, explain this unexpected success? This book brings together insights from open source software, open standards, and standards-setting, and illustrates the dynamics of standards-settings by examining two standards battles: Internet Explorer versus Netscape, and Internet Explorer versus Firefox.
