The Encyclopedia of Cancer
The Encyclopedia of Cancer
Carol Turkington | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Facts on File | 461 | Encyclopedias
More than 400 cancer-related topics are arranged alphabetically in dictionary format. Acronyms, specific cancers, medical procedures, and organizations are interfiled. The entries range in size from only a brief sentence to several pages of description. The longest and most detailed entries usually describe specific forms of cancer (Brain cancer, Lung cancer); surgical procedures (mastectomy); screening techniques (mammography); and relevant topics such as African Americans and cancer, Cell phones, Diet, and Pain control. Most cancer descriptions include causes or risk factors, symptoms, diagnoses, staging, treatment, and, where applicable, prognosis. Three appendixes, a glossary, an extensive bibliography, and a general index complete the volume.

Science of Everyday Things: Real-Life Biology. Volume 3
Science of Everyday Things: Real-Life Biology. Volume 3
Judson Knight, Neil Schlager | 2002-01-01 00:00:00 | Thomson Gale | 396 | Encyclopedias
From Booklist
The first two volumes of this series are Real-Life Chemistry and Real-Life Physics, released in 2001. The purpose of the series is to explain scientific phenomena using common real-world examples. Real-Life Biology has about 40 entries covering various scientific phenomena and principles. Information in each entry includes "Concept" (defines the scientific principle or theory), "How It Works," "Real-Life Applications," and "Where to Learn More." A "Key Terms" section defines terms from the text. Examples of topics include biochemistry, nutrition, reproduction and birth, immunity, infection, and the biosphere and ecosystems. Under "Real-Life Applications" we can learn about the fate of the dodo bird (under Species) and working the night shift (under Biological rhythms).
Entries, written at a level accessible to high-school students and the general reader, average about 10 pages in length. The "Where to Learn More" section provides about 10 books and Web sites for further information. Black-and-white line drawings and photographs supplement the text. There are no color illustrations. An index offers subject access to the contents of the volume; in addition, there is a cumulative subject index of all 4 volumes. The basic facts provided in these books are available elsewhere, but the "Real-Life Applications" may be interesting to some. Recommended for high-school and public libraries. RBB

Encyclopedia Of World Writers, Beginnings To 20th Century
Encyclopedia Of World Writers, Beginnings To 20th Century
Thierry Boucquey | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 | Facts on File | 1248 | Encyclopedias
From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–This collection of nearly 1000 entries on world writers, literary forms, genres and movements, language, and texts considered to be masterpieces spans from the beginnings of human literary activity through the 20th century. The volumes are separated by period and each one begins with an introduction and time line. Entries range in length from a few paragraphs to two pages for major writers such as V. S. Naipaul or Jean-Paul Sartre. Author entries contain brief biographical information and a bibliography that includes listings of Works about... and translations. Most valuable will be the Critical Analysis portion found in some articles that provides a good summary of themes and contributions for many authors whose writings might be inaccessible to students, such as Julius Caesar and Marco Polo. The set bibliography lists additional critical sources. Topical essays cover magical realism, rationalism, epistolary novel, Maya epics, fables, bardic poetry, creation myths, and more. Some fictional characters are included, such as Tristan and Iseult. Religious texts are discussed in terms of format, theme, and content. This reference will stand out for its scope, particularly the accessible entries on the earliest literary activity.–Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY

From Booklist
Students often find it difficult to locate more than surface biographical data on world authors. Finding criticism--especially in English--can be equally frustrating. In addition to entries for genres, movements, and literary terms, this set offers critical biographies on an array of international authors. Coverage encompasses a spectrum of formats, including poetry, drama, fiction, memoir, essays, epics, odes, and sacred texts. The first volume begins with African proverbs dating from 1500 B.C and continues through the end of the thirteenth century. Volume 2 considers 1300 through the 1800s, and volume 3 concentrates on the past two centuries. The focus is on individuals and genres that are underrepresented in traditional resources. As a result, although there are numerous references to early Native American, Anglo-Saxon, and Celtic literature in the first volume, only a handful of English and English-speaking American writers appears in volume 2, and volume 3 does not include any writers from either the U.S. or Great Britain.
Alphabetically arranged articles range from a couple of paragraphs to a few pages. Longer biographical entries include separate sections on critical analysis. Most entries end with a list of English translations and further reading selections. Each tome features a volume--specific preface, introduction, time line, list of writers by geographic region, bibliography, and index.
The text is scholarly but should be accessible to students in grades nine and up. The set lacks some basic user-friendly features that would have enhanced its use as an educational tool. For example, there are no illustrations. There are no comprehensive set geographic listings. Time lines are listed in columns of names and dates, as opposed to layouts that would delineate contemporaries and overlapping influences. Still, academic libraries as well as public and secondary collections that support world literature curricula will want to add this as a supplement to standard references such as Cyclopedia of World Authors (Salem, 2004) and titles in H.W. Wilson's World Authors series. Kathleen McBroom

Encyclopedia Judaica 22 Volume Set
Encyclopedia Judaica 22 Volume Set
Fred Skolnik (Editor) | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | MacMillan Reference Books | 17000 | Encyclopedias
The new edition of Encyclopaedia Judaica brings a monumental reference work into the twenty-first century. In 1928 Nahum Goldman, head of Eshkol Publishing, in Berlin, began work on a comprehensive reference work about the history and culture of the Jewish people. That work was never completed, and the 10 finished volumes remain as both a witness to European Jewish scholarship and a reminder of Hitler's destruction of that tradition. Goldman survived the Holocaust, and in 1966, he used his reparation money to revive work on the encyclopedia at Keter Publishing House, in Jerusalem. In 1972, more than 45 years after the work began, the first edition was completed. Keter Publishing House and Macmillan Reference USA, its American partner, released Hebrew and English-language versions of the work. Like the original work, it was a thorough, organized overview of Jewish life and knowledge. Updating a large resource is difficult. The publishers issued yearbooks and two supplements cumulating the 1973–1982 and 1983–1992 volumes as well as an updated CD-ROM version in 1997, but the Jewish world has changed a great deal since then. The second edition is also a collaboration of Keter Publishing House and Macmillan Reference, which is now a Thomson Gale imprint. Editors Berenbaum and Skolnik gathered an international team of more than 50 divisional editors and 1,200 scholars to produce the work. They have created 22 volumes with approximately 22,000 entries. Some 2,600 entries are new, and 12,000 have been substantially revised. As they did in Encyclopedia of Religion (2004), the publishers left the original articles intact and added updated material in an appended article that follows. This edition has 150 pages of color inserts appearing as centerfolds in each volume as well as 600 maps, tables, and illustrations. There are also 30,000 new biographical entries. Why is this edition different? Building on the scholarship of the first edition, the editors have added material that documents today's Jewish communities. Since the publication of the first edition, Israel has been through two wars and two intifadas, the role of women in Jewish life has greatly expanded, and the Soviet Union has disappeared. The most rapidly growing Jewish communities in the U.S. are in Las Vegas and Phoenix, but the actual number of Jews in the country is declining due to low birth rates. A whole new generation of scholarship has emerged, with new information about everything from the Bible and the Talmud to women's studies and the Holocaust. The contributors to this edition used the material of the great scholars such as Salo Baron, Cecil Roth, and Gershom Scholem as a foundation for their new insights, giving users greater depth and a modern perspective. Volume 1 has a list of the editors and contributors. They include Yehuda Bauer (Hebrew University), David Ellenson (Hebrew Union College), Deborah E. Lipstadt (University of California, Los Angeles), and Xun Zhou (University of London). The encyclopedia features entries such as an article on Jewish law (Mishpat Ivri) written by Justice Menachem Elon, deputy president of the Supreme Court of Israel. He examines ancient religious law as reflected in the courts of a modern, sovereign Jewish state. Entries about the Bible include both the great medieval commentators such as Rashi and Maimonides and modern critical literary studies of the Bible as an integrated work. Contributors examine the sources of the Bible, its composition, and its authors. The Talmud receives similar treatment, with more than 100 biographies of the greater and lesser rabbinic figures and more accessible material, reflecting the increased participation of the public in Talmudic study. The women's perspective appears throughout the encyclopedia, with articles about biblical stereotypes, their views about the mikveh (ritual bath), and biographies of women both ancient and modern (Beruryah, a second-century Talmud scholar; Bella Abzug). Agunah (Orthodox women who cannot remarry because their husbands refuse to grant them religious divorces) and coverage of the bat mitzvah and the Women of the Wall case are other examples of the increased emphasis on women's issues in this edition. Extensive articles document the contributions of Jews to the arts, sciences, sports, politics, and entertainment. Albert Einstein, Rita Levi-Montalcini, Amos Oz, and Philip Roth appear along with Victor Borge, Jascha Heifetz, and Sandy Koufax. Each of the 50 states and the countries of the world, as well as major cities, have entries, as do museums, cultural institutions, and organizations. The Holocaust and Israel occupy the major part of volumes 9 and 10, respectively, reflecting their important roles in Jewish history and culture. Several thematic outlines (for articles on history, religion, language and literature, Jews in world culture, and women) and a detailed index help users pinpoint specific information. The e-book version uses the standard Gale interface and is available as part of the Gale Virtual Reference Center. One nice feature for users who print or download is the option of getting the text in PDF format if desired. The second edition of Encyclopaedia Judaica is a welcome addition to reference collections. By documenting the modern Jewish experience while retaining links with its rich past, it provides users with information about all aspects of Jewish religion and culture. This work received the 2006 Dartmouth Medal, a well-deserved award.

The Color Encyclopedia of Hostas
The Color Encyclopedia of Hostas
Diana Grenfell | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | Timber Press, Incorporated | 406 | Encyclopedias
This illustrated collection features 750 varieties of hostas: those "exotic, luxuriant-leafed perennials," as HRH The Prince of Wales describes in his preface, that have spread their way into gardens and greenhouses everywhere. Originally cultivated in Japan, the hardy plants form a protruding lily-like bloom among clumps of heart-shaped leaves in a rainbow of hues—from the "Blue Clown" to the "Gold Regal" to the slightly variegated sage and white "Abba Irresistible." In entries organized by color, hosta specialist Grenfell reviews the special needs and features of each, also offering advice on designing beds and containers and combating pests and diseases. Appendices include hardiness zone maps for Europe and North America, suggestions for how to use and where to see hostas, and a glossary. Shadrack’s sumptuous photographs form a bright centerpiece for this comprehensive guide.

Product Description:
Award-Winning Nano Encyclopedia Continues to Pace the Field
With its original publication, the Dekker Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology immediately became the reference against which all other nano references are measured. Noting that the encyclopedia was being assembled by leading authorities at an early stage in the field’s development, Sir Harry Kroto, 1996 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, rightfully predicted that the encyclopedia would bring together key advances in a “coherently organized framework.â€Continuing to cover the field as no other resource, the seven volume second edition crosses disciplines to examine fundamental nano principles, theories, and methodologies, as well as the latest information on nano-relevant properties. It also covers advances in nanoscale engineering, newly developed simulation tools, and emerging computational methods. It’s available both in print and as a fully searchable online version.

Encyclopedia of Obesity
Encyclopedia of Obesity
Kathleen Keller | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Sage Publications | 1040 | Encyclopedias
Authoritative information on obesity, a growing worldwide health concern, is of great interest. With signed contributions from more than 250 subject specialists, the Encyclopedia of Obesity readily fills the need for reference material. About 500 alphabetically arranged articles, targeted to a variety of audiences, from scholars to the general public, provide a broad overview. Among the key themes that are addressed are biological or genetic contributors to obesity (Adipocytes, Low birth weight, Tubby candidate gene); eating disorders (Binge eating, Eating disorders and gender); medical treatments for obesity (Gastric bypass, Liquid diets); obesity as a public health crisis (Built environments, Food marketing to children); societal influences and outcomes of obesity (Body image, Food advertising and obesity); and new research (Energy expenditure technologies, Whole-body potassium counting). A “Reader’s Guide†assists readers in finding articles related by category or theme; however, the entry heads and indexing could use some improvement. Examples of topics that could be difficult to locate include cholesterol (the entry heading is Elevated cholesterol) and the connection between obesity and automobiles (the entry heading is Increased reliance on automobiles). The entry Implications of restriction of foods on child feeding habits is not found in the index under children. Bibliographies at the end of each article supply suggestions for further research. Supplementary materials include a resource guide of recommended books, articles, and Web sites; tables of the prevalence of obesity in males and females by country; and a nine-page glossary. A few black-and-white photographs augment the text. Notable for articles by a large number of experts in the field, the Encyclopedia of Obesity is an excellent source for reliable information on obesity and is recommended for undergraduate, public, and special libraries.

Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology: Biochemistry
Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology: Biochemistry
Robert A. Meyers (Editor) | 2001-01-01 00:00:00 | Academic Press; 3rd edition | 220 | Encyclopedias
From Library Journal
Although almost a decade has passed since the second edition of this work was published, this encyclopedia's reputation as a high-quality scholarly work has not diminished. Guided by an advisory board comprising leading researchers (including eight Nobel laureates), editor in chief Meyers (Ramtech, Inc.) used a peer review process that produced over 780 articles written by experts. The coverage in this third edition has expanded to include molecular biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. The decision to eliminate articles on military technology contributed to the deletion of about 200 articles; however, nearly 300 articles were added to cover new topics such as molecular electronics, nanostructured materials, tissue engineering, superstring theory, and the World Wide Web. The remaining articles were either updated or rewritten. Averaging 17-18 pages in length, the well-written articles present detailed information in a logical, organized manner. All follow a basic format: outline, glossary, defining statement, main body, cross references, and bibliography. A separate volume contains a list of contents by broad subject area, a relational index with groupings of connected articles, and the traditional subject index. The 20-volume McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology (LJ 9/1/97) focuses on a broader range of scientific disciplines and a broader audience, so its articles are generally shorter and less detailed. With an intended audience of scientists and engineers and an emphasis on the physical sciences and technology, this encyclopedia aims to provide in-depth, authoritative coverage without limiting the mathematical treatment to algebra. This is an excellent source for students and researchers needing an overview of a particular subject. Highly recommended for academic and other types of libraries with significant science/technology collections. Teresa Berry, Univ. of Tennessee Libs., Knoxville
