When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.

But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

Reviews
This book was very good and gives insight from a young boy's point of view during the holocaust. He was the son to a powerful Nazi but he never realized much till the end when he began talking and socializing with a young Jew on the other side of the fence. I could not put this book down and it was a great read!

Its a good book. I believe it comes off as poorly written initially, but that's only because its written from an 8 year old child's perspective. I won't give anything away, but its a good picture of war.

When nine-year-old Bruno's father is ordered by the Fury to take command of Out-With, his entire family moves along with him. Bored, and missing his three best-friends-for-life, Bruno has no-one to play with but his older, and meaner sister, Gretel. Until one day, he decides to go exploring. After a while, he finds a new friend to talk to, though they cannot play together.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a brilliant book that is well worth reading. Seeing history through the eyes of a confused child, we are able to view events with a fresh perspective. This is one of those books that will have you thinking long after you finish reading.

If you read nothing else this year, read this.

If you want to read a book about the holocaust, go for Maus I & II. I would bypass this one. It began with the author saying he couldn't really explain this book. Shame, if he had I wouldn't have read it. It started off from the perspective of a 9 year old boy. I liked that part of it. He wasn't happy about moving away from his friends. Both he and his sister are spoiled brats from a well off German officers family. About the middle of the book, it started to irritate me, and by the end I wanted to throw this book across the room. I can't believe they actually made a movie.

Excellent book and easy-to-follow plot. The perspective of a child adds a sentimental view to the atrocious acts that occurred at the concentration camp. Very quick read as well. Not reading this book would be an injustice.
